ReplayTV getting back into hardware game (kind of)
by Brad Linder, posted Sep 17th 2007 1:00PM
Remember ReplayTV? Once upon a time the company was about as well known as TiVo, which is to say not very. While TiVo eventually became synonymous with "personal video recorder," ReplayTV stopped making set top boxes a few years ago.Last year the company emerged from the ashes to relaunch as a desktop software maker. ReplayTV PC Edition is a complete desktop PVR solution that lets you turn your computer into a video recorder. There were just two problems:
- A ton of other companies already had a stronger foothold in this space
- It's not really a complete solution if you still need to buy hardware to make your PC record TV shows.
Does the fact that ReplayTV is getting ready to launch what looks like a standard USB 2.0 HDTV tuner change any of this? Probably not. But it does give the company a way to package an all-in-one solution. Buy a retail package with the ReplayTV hardware and software all in one box. We're guessing this tuner will probably work just as well with BeyondTV, SageTV, or free software like Media Portal or MythTV.
It's probably worth noting that the ReplayTV HD looks an awful lot like the Hauppauge WinTV HVR 950 recorder with a red and white paint job. So you can probably expect it to sell for about $100.
Elgato releases EyeTV 250 Plus HDTV tuner for Mac
by Brad Linder, posted Aug 17th 2007 8:01AM
Elgato has released the latest in its line of TV tuners for Mac. The EyeTV 250 Plus is a USB 2.0 HDTV tuner, although you can also use the $200 box as a standard def tuner should the need arise. There was a time when Elgato and Miglia were pretty much the only game in town for Mac users looking to add TV tuners and PVR functionality to their computers. But a few months back, Hauppauge announced that its popular PC TV tuners were now Mac compatible. So should we read anything into the fact that Elgato is calling this new tuner the EyeTV 250? After all, one of the most popular Hauppauge cards is the WinTV PVR-250.
Name recognition issues aside, the EyeTV 250 Plus looks like a pretty good deal. For your money, you get the TV tuner, Elgato's PVR software, and Roxio Toast 8 Basic for burning CDs and DVDs.

Hauppauge releases WinTV V6 with QAM support
by Brad Linder, posted Jun 13th 2007 1:35PM
One of the first things most people do when they buy a TV tuner card for their PC is to throw away the PVR software that came with the tuner. Windows Media Center, BeyondTV, SageTV, MythTV or Media Portal do a much better job of letting you watch and record TV.So I've never spent much time with Hauppauge's WinTV software, even though I've purchased 4 Hauppauge TV tuners over the years. Version 6 was just released, and it's worth taking a look at. The software includes a new streamlined (and skinnable) interface and a new taskbar for recording, pausing, and playing TV.
But more importantly, WinTV V6 includes a driver update that allows HD tuners like the Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600 to receive QAM signals. In other words, you can connect your PC to your digital cable and receive any unencrypted HD channels available from your provider. That probably includes most of the major broadcast networks.
Watching Joost on your TV with a remote control
by Brad Linder, posted Jun 6th 2007 1:07PM

While Joost really does make watching online videos a bit more like watching TV and a bit less like surfing the web, you still pretty much need to use a keyboard to navigate. And that means even if you run a line from the video-out port on your computer or graphics card to your TV, it's no easy feat to watch Joost on the big screen.
Luckily, you can map the keyboard shortcuts to most PC remote controls. And you can even add an icon to your Windows Media Center Program Library that will start and stop Joost. Here are a few tips:
Deal of the Day: Hauppauge HD TV Tuner for $70
by Brad Linder, posted May 31st 2007 12:29PM
Amazon has a great deal on the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 HDTV tuner. This NTSC/ATSC card normally sells for $90 to $100, but Amazon has it for $70 after rebate. The card has two separate tuners, a 125 channel cable/antenna tuner, and an ATSC digital TV tuner that can be plugged into a high definition antenna. In other words, you can use the card to record two programs at the same time, as long as they're from separate sources.
The HVR-1600 comes with a Hauppauge IR remote control and WinTV2000 software which is sufficient for testing out your tuner, but I'd highly recommend checking out Windows Media Center, BeyondTV, SageTV, GB-PVR, Media Portal (for Windows users) or MythTV (for Linux) if you want to take full advantage of this card.
Hauppauge TV tuners now work with Mac EyeTV software
by Brad Linder, posted May 23rd 2007 6:00PM
Hauppauge has announced that its TV tuner products are now compatible with Macintosh computers running Elgato's EyeTV software.I've been using Hauppauge tuners in my PC for years now, and I have to say their WinTV PVR-150 standard definition tuner and their hybrid WinTV HVR-1600 SD/HD tuner are workhorses. While those are both PCI tuners, it looks like it will be Hauppauge's newer USB sticks that will work with Macs.
The WinTV Nova-T, Nova-TD, HVR-900 and HVR-950 sticks are all supported. While the number of TV tuners for Macs has risen in the past few years, it's nice to see Hauppauge give some love toward the Apple crowd.
