What I'm watching this summer: Jonathan's list

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jun 5th 2007 10:33AM

Denis LearySummer TV now and summer TV ten years ago are two entirely different things. There's actually stuff (good stuff) on in the sunny months. It's no longer just re-runs, corny clip-shows, and over-used made for TV movies. Networks, especially cable ones, now give us plenty of reasons to tune in instead of going to the beach and the following shows are sure to keep me pale and tanless this summer.

Rescue Me [Premieres Wed. June 13 on F/X] -- This is by far my favorite summer show. It's the one I look forward to more than anything and frankly, I'd be fine letting go of everything else on this list if I got to keep Rescue Me. Fortunately, I've already been able to screen the first three episodes of season four and it's shaping up to be the best one yet. Tommy Gavin really is America's favorite a-hole.

Hidden Palms: Pilot

Hidden Palms: Pilot
(S01E01)
Since it's been several months since I took a first look at Kevin Williamson's Hidden Palms, I decided to watch tonight's premiere episode again, just in case. Except for a few music cues (you know how The CW really loves their dramatic musical moments), everything was the same. Not that that's a bad thing, though. This is the show that I first dismissed as a cheap knockoff of The O.C., and then got sucked into after three episodes.

What to Watch May 28 - June 3

by Kelly Woo, posted May 28th 2007 10:07AM
Simple Life on E! and Entourage on HBOHere are AOL Television's top picks of the week.

The Simple Life Goes to Camp (Mon., 10PM ET, E!) 5th season premiere
Maybe Paris Hilton is going to jail as one big publicity stunt. Hey, last season, she and Nicole Richie generated interest by "not speaking." Now, they're BFFs again and serving as counselors in Southern California's Camp Shawnee, where they stir up trouble for the weight loss, pageant, survival and drama campers. It's rough going for the celebutantes, who must share cabins, walk outside to go to the bathroom and (gasp) give up their Blackberries.

House (Tue., 9PM ET, Fox) 3rd season finale
Oh, House. He may drive everyone in his life crazy, but he's a brilliant doctor. So brilliant, a Cuban couple risk a dangerous sea voyage just so House might treat the sick wife, Marina. Unfortunately, her medical records are lost in the shipwreck, and when the team performs diagnostic tests, she flatlines. As House races to keep her alive, Foreman prepares to leave the hospital. Can House save Marina -- and his team?

CW president on merger results: still too early to tell - TCA Report

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 19th 2007 3:16PM
CW logoThe CW decided to go for the funny in its TCA press tour executive session this morning. They played a video clip of an over-eager Adult Swim-style Chyron screen (instead of white on black, though, it was yellow on the ubiquitous CW green), apologizing for technical difficulties and making some interesting jokes. They even name checked Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle, who in an ironic twist, wasn't there to see it.

The message of all this? "We're The CW! Watch us! We're doing something different!" And that was also the theme of the presentation from the network's president of entertainment, Dawn Ostroff.

Hidden Palms - an early look

hidden palms
When I first started watching The CW's yet-to-be-scheduled midseason replacement Hidden Palms, the first thing I said was "O.C. RIPOFF!" Then I realized that I'd said it out loud, because I was sitting in a Starbucks watching it on my laptop, trying to look like a writer-type at work. After I mumbled an "Oops, sorry ..." I screwed my earbuds back in and gave it another whirl. After two episodes, I have to say I'm sucked in and want to see more. Curse you, Kevin Williamson.
