Director Johnatan Demme obtained over 200 hours of footage of the Katrina aftermath, and the resulting documentary, Right to Return: New Home Movies from the Lower 9th Ward will air for five consecutive nights on Tavis Smiley's PBS show beginning this evening. Two TV stations in Florida may have to pay a fine of $24,000 a piece for not adequately informing their deaf viewers of Hurricane Charley's approach last year. Complaints were filed by one individual and two organizations which claimed two affiliates (one ABC, one NBC) did not provide a visual example of the emergency situation to those who needed it. Based on my minimal experience with this subject (I lived with a deaf girl for a few months) this doesn't come as a great surprise to me. Save for closed-captioning, which is typically sub-par, TV has never sufficiently provided information to the hearing-impaired.
