'Ice Road Truckers' Star Lisa Kelly Talks Danger and Earning Respect

by Chris Jordan, posted Sep 29th 2010 4:00PM
If you thought the ice roads of Alaska were tough-trucking, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Lisa Kelly, Rick Yemm and Alex Debogorski of The History Channel's 'Ice Road Truckers' fame are leaving the frozen tundra of the Dalton Highway for the out-of-this-world trucking action of the Himalayan Mountains on a new spinoff, 'IRT: Deadliest Roads' (premiering Sun., Oct. 3 at 10PM ET).

Look for the guys and gal to navigate the crowded streets of Delhi -- locals aren't very attentive to traffic signals over there -- and the Himalayan roadways, which date back to 206 B.C. The Himalayan route, first built for yaks, has historically connected Central Asia with South Asia and provided a bridge among the cultures of India, China, Afghanistan, Nepal and Bhutan.

TV Squad spoke with Kelly, who calls Wasilla, Alaska home, about her trip to the Himalayas and the challenges of being the only gal featured on 'Ice Road Truckers.' (And no, the married 29-year old has never met Wasilla's most famous resident, Sarah Palin.)

A Rookie Mistake Nearly Leads to Death on 'Ice Road Truckers' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jun 14th 2010 3:00AM
A Rookie Mistake Nearly Leads to Death on 'Ice Road Truckers'Look, we'll be honest. We don't know a lot about driving a truck over a thousand miles of frozen wasteland. It's just not our area of expertise. But we do know one thing. If you're going to journey through endless stretches of ice and snow, then you should at least put snow chains on your tires. It's just common sense.

But the new driver on 'Ice Road Truckers' (Sun., 9PM ET on History) seems not to have gotten this memo. In attempt to make better time, he doesn't bother to upgrade his wheels, meaning that he's just using regular tires. Not good. As a result, rookie driver Ray Veilleux nearly falls over a 1000-foot cliff. Whoops!

TV Shows on DVD for June 8

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Jun 8th 2010 5:45PM
A-Team The Complete Series on DVD This week is probably the best date week to see a movie. If you're gearing up to take your hot date to see 'The A-Team' this week, why not impress him/her by imparting some crazy relevant pop culture history?

As of today, you'll be able to brush up on what I like to call, "Everything you need to know about the 'A-Team' beyond Mr. T" by watching the entire original series on DVD.

As for other great titles coming out today include 'iCarly' and 'Ice Road Truckers' Season 3 -- which technically wasn't really on an ice road.

Best TV of the '00s: Reality Series

More of our best of the decade coverage, which started on Tuesday. You can read the other posts at the link above. Here, we talk about a major category that came of age in the aughts: Reality shows.

While I would never call myself a reality TV junkie, it really bugs me when people make blanket statements like, "I hate reality TV," or, "Reality TV is the bane of my existence." The genre has grown so much in the past decade that it has become just like scripted television, in that there's good and there's bad. Even though we're splitting this up into two lists, "Reality," and "Trashy Reality," you won't see a single show that starts with, "Who Wants to Marry" on either list.

This list is dedicated not to the guilty pleasures, but to the shows that you wouldn't be embarrassed for your neighbors to know you watch: the classy reality, if you will. So without further ado, here is TV Squad's list of the best reality shows of the decade.

New TV DVDs for Dec. 15: 'Robot Chicken,' 'The Tudors' and More

by Scott Harris, posted Dec 15th 2009 9:48AM
One of the best parts of the holiday season is the return of some of television's most beloved animated classics. Shows like, for instance, 'A Charlie Brown Christmas,' 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer' and, of course, 'Robot Chicken.'

Okay, so maybe 'Robot Chicken' isn't quite your father's stop-motion show, but retailers around the nation are about to find out how today's brand of animation stacks up against favorites of the past as several offbeat animated series get the DVD treatment. But don't worry, if cartoons aren't your thing, we've also dug up some releases from other genres that will make some of the best gifts this side of the Island of Misfit Toys.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 14th 2009 6:01PM
Star TrekHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I think I might have asked this question before, but I'll ask it again: just how many Star Trek (original series) sets are there? There seems to be a new one released every few months. I know there are Blu-ray sets being released now, but at what point does even the most die-hard Trek fan say enough is enough and they're not going to buy any more? A friend of mine loves Star Trek and seems to buy every new version of the show that comes out.

  • Cake Boss - Cake Boss
  • Criss Angel Mindfreak - Season 5 and Collector's Edition Megaset
  • Ice Road Truckers - Season 3
  • The Maxx - Complete Series
  • The Paper Chase - Season 2
  • Robot Chicken - Season 4
  • Sherlock Holmes - The Collection
  • Star Trek - Season 3 (Blu-ray)
  • The Tudors - Season 3

The History Channel dilutes its brand with even more reality shows

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 2nd 2009 9:30AM
Ice Road TruckersI can't even blame the cable networks for this anymore. The History Channel is expanding its repertoire of reality programs as a direct response to the record ratings they've seen with the ones they have now. What do we expect them to do when we don't show up to watch until they throw Ice Road Truckers and Pawn Stars at us? Apparently, we don't want history on the History Channel.

They've heard us, which is why The History Channel is bringing us more reality, starting with a spi-off of the aforementioned Truckers. Extreme Trucking will travel the world looking for the most treacherous roadways anywhere, and the brave men and women who drive them.

We can also look forward to traveling the US with Pickers, as people hunt for rare artifacts. And we'll get down and dirty with a 61-year old feud at a North Carolina NASCAR track with Madhouse. Even more unusual is Sliced, a series where objects are cut in half so we can see what they look like. Hey, if they cut a tree in half we can look at the history of it!

Ice Road Truckers iPhone app lets fans hit the frozen road

by John Scott Lewinski, posted Jun 25th 2009 12:03PM
A new iPhone app lets fans of Ice Road Truckers hit the road. It's doubtful the tough guys (and gal) driving north to Alaska on the current season of Ice Road Truckers are big video game players. They're too busy staying alive while driving tons of cargo over roads would keep sane people home from school.

But, that's not stopping The (former) History Channel from launching its first paid iPhone and iPod Touch game with an application that allows users to command 18-wheelers across Arctic roads.

Fans of the show -- and of snowy truck driving in general -- can download a free, "lite" test version of the game now through Apple iTunes.
