James Durbin Brings the Fire to His Elton John Performance on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

James Durbin, 'American Idol'There is no debate that James Durbin is the hardest-rocking vocalist on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) this season. Week after week, he's proven he can wrap his big voice around anything. So how did he up the ante for Elton John week?

Tackling 'Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting),' Durbin took a huge risk. In 'Idol' seasons past, stylized songs with repetitive lyrics like that haven't led to the best performances, but Durbin managed to make it work. He also jumped around the stage and added some unexpected elements to spark the performance.

We certainly didn't see the piano fire coming, but by then we were fully immersed in this rock experience. Like Jennifer Lopez said, "When you're up there, I forget that it's a competition show. I think I'm at a show."

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

Proving it still knows how to have fun, 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) set up a special surprise for contestants James Durbin and Paul McDonald. After showing a clip of the two wrestling in the mansion, and Durbin's passionate talk about the sport, Ryan Seacrest set them up for the ultimate treat.

During the elimination, he positioned them on stage just so and then told them they weren't safe tonight. "I mean, you're really not safe," he said, stepping back as the doors opened behind the pair.

Standing there was Hulk Hogan, who came out with good news and bad news. Durbin was on his knees in shock and excitement at seeing one of his wrestling heroes in the flesh. To make the moment sweeter, Hogan revealed that both he and McDonald were safe. It was Seacrest, the Hulkster was after!

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

'American Idol': James Durbin is 'Everything' on a Paul McCartney Classic (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 9th 2011 11:46PM
James Durbin, 'American Idol'James Durbin is definitely in this thing to win it. After blowing everyone away last week on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) with a Judas Priest classic, he pulled us in an entirely different direction this week with an equally dominant version of Paul McCartney's 'Maybe I'm Amazed.'

The power of his voice was still evident, but so was the beautiful quality and the tenderness in his natural tone. That's something we haven't seen a lot of from him.

"You have what the greatest rock singers have, and that's a melodic quality to your voice," Jennifer Lopez said. "It's just ... everything."

Was James Durbin "everything" for you? Who do you think was the best of the night?

'American Idol': James Durbin Rocks Judas Priest, Gets Judges Cursing and Dancing (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 1st 2011 11:47PM
James Durbin, 'American Idol'James Durbin clearly set out to establish himself as a genuine rocker in this first voting round of 'American Idol' (Tue., 8PM ET on FOX). In a group of strong guys, he's stood out from the beginning with his impressive vocal range, but at times he would tend to oversing a bit in an effort to show off what he could do.

Tackling Judas Priest's 'You've Got Another Thing Comin',' Durbin managed to both rein in his bad tendencies of showing off while still spotlighting his incredible range and power. As such, it was a beautifully controlled performance that immediately knocked the curse words right out of Steven Tyler's mouth.

"That was f****** crazy good!" Tyler shouted, confirming suspicions that he would likely drop f-bombs on the live shows. He even came equipped with his own 'Idol' logo to cover his mouth with.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays (and sometimes even Tuesdays) at 8PM ET on FOX.
