James Durbin Rocks Out With Judas Priest on 'American Idol' Finale (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 26th 2011 1:21AM
James Durbin & Judas Priest, 'American Idol' finaleJames Durbin didn't get to rock out with the resident rocker on the 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) finale, but he still got to take to the stage with a legendary band. It was a beautiful vocal harmony between Durbin and Judas Priest's Rob Halford as they tackled a medley of two of Priest's biggest hits.

As we know you were anticipating, there was plenty of fire and explosions to help make sure we knew this was a James Durbin performance. All in all, he looked completely comfortable with the band and it was a great preview of the type of career he might have.

In a package on the most shocking elimination of the season, Durbin equated his own elimination to that of Chris Daughtry -- both wound up in fourth place.

James Durbin Has No Regrets Over 'American Idol' OusterLast week on 'American Idol,' James Durbin was eliminated from the singing competition, much to the surprise of his many fans. On 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' (weekdays, syndicated), Ellen DeGeneres seemed just as shocked, but Durbin himself was philosophical about his ouster.

"I was heartbroken that you were sent home," said DeGeneres. "I don't understand it. Early on, I picked you to win the whole thing. So, I was wrong about that, but I think you're amazing."

James Durbin Joins Randy Jackson and Jimmy Fallon on a Journey Song (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 18th 2011 6:49AM
Randy Jackson & James Durbin, 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'When Jimmy Fallon had Randy Jackson on 'Late Night' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC), it was all fine and dandy to talk about 'American Idol' and all of that. But what would be really fun would be to jam with Jackson on a Journey track.

To make it more memorable, Jackson invited a friend along to help Fallon with the singing. And it's someone his 'Idol' fans would recognize right away.

Fresh off his surprise elimination from the singing competition, James Durbin lit up the 'Late Night' stage and proved he doesn't need any title from a reality show to prove that he has amazing chops.

While their harmonies may have been a little strange, it was a lot of fun seeing Jackson playing bass on a song from his old band's catalog, and Fallon and Durbin were clearly having a lot of fun sharing the vocals. It was certainly a fun and memorable moment.

James Durbin Discusses Aspergers and Tourette's Syndromes on 'Access Hollywood Live' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted May 17th 2011 6:15PM
JAmes Durbin on 'Access Hollywood Live'Recently ousted 'American Idol' contestant James Durbin had to content with a lot growing up with both Aspergers and Tourette's Syndromes. He spoke today on 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated on NBC) about coming home crying every day from school and having kids make fun of him. That prompted Durbin to quit taking medication to control his tics and quirks at age 16.

"[I] was tired of being controlled by a man-made substance," he said. "I feel so comfortable to just live in my own shoes and be me and be who god made me to be." Durbin choked up talking about kids watching him on 'Idol' and telling him their stories. "They watched auditions and say me and, you know, and looked at their mom and said, you know -- it's even hard to talk about -- 'I'm like him, he's like me,'" he said.

It's an inspirational story and proof, said Durbin, that he can do anything.

Meredith Vieira Likes James Durbin's Tail (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted May 17th 2011 1:40PM
James Durbin on 'Today'James Durbin said on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) that he felt he was voted off 'American Idol' at the right time. Many were disappointed to see Durbin go, and though he admitted he was blindsided, he said he felt he'd had a "perfect night" during the competition round, and "I really felt like it was kind of my time to go." He got a bit more consolation from Meredith Vieira on today's show.

Al Roker
noted that this was the first time Vieira had ever said she "liked his tail." Ann Curry then picked up and shook a bushy, furry tail Durbin wears attached to his belt and said that's what Vieira was referring to. "No, I actually wasn't talking about that," Vieira said, to the mock embarrassment of all involved.

Vieira felt it was an injustice when Durbin was voted off. Vieira is also leaving 'Today' soon. Perhaps they should launch their own talk show, 'Meredith and the Fox.'

'American Idol' Top Three Revealed: Who Was Eliminated? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 13th 2011 12:31AM
Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson, 'American Idol'Top Four has been an odd time in 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) history. As Ryan Seacrest pointed out at the close of the performance episode, it was at this point in the competition that Chris Daughtry was eliminated back in Season 5.

Other fourth-place finishers include Tamyra Gray, Josh Gracin, LaToya London, Jason Castro and Allison Iraheta, so it doesn't mean the end of the road. Sure, only Daughtry came out of it with a monster career so far, but many of these people have been able to go on and make music their career in some way.

Girls were the first five eliminated, but since then Lauren and Haley have outlasted four guys in a row. Could they continue their streak and send Scotty or James home, or would the boys make a comeback. It's such a tight field this season, it was difficult to predict what might happen.

James Durbin Continues His Reign With 'Love Potion No. 9' on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 11th 2011 11:57PM
James Durbin, 'American Idol'James Durbin had a very smart night on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX). First, he tackled Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin',' which was made famous again just a couple years ago as the signature song for the cast of 'Glee.'

Then, he brought his rocker vibe to 'Love Potion No. 9,' reinventing the song to suit his style perfectly. As usual, he brought a full stage production, with flames, smoke and a full band to his performances. It was a stark contrast to Scotty McCreery running around the empty stage on his second song of the night.

The judges talk all the time about the contestants needing to have a "moment" to connect with the audiences at home, but as they said tonight, James Durbin is having a moment each week. In some cases he's having two moments.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

'American Idol' Top Five Results: Which Contestant Was Eliminated? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 6th 2011 12:40AM
Top Five Elimination, 'American Idol'It's down to the wire now on 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX). With only five contestants left, each of them had two solo performances last night. For most of them, this proved to be a blessing as they were able to nail at least one of their songs.

Haley Reinhart had a shaky start, according to the judges, with an unreleased Lady Gaga song. But she closed the show with an amazing take on 'The House of the Rising Sun.' Scotty opened strong with 'Gone,' but wasn't as strong on his second number.

James lost himself in the emotions a bit in his second song, which could have hurt or helped him with viewers. Lauren held back a bit on 'Unchained Melody,' while Jacob floundered a lot on 'No Air.' With so many hits and misses, it was anyone's week to lose.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

Sheryl Crow Predicts James Durbin or Lauren Alaina Will Win 'American Idol'Since she worked with each of the remaining five contestants on 'American Idol' last night as a mentor, musician Sheryl Crow is perhaps in the best position to predict who the finalists will be. On 'The Wendy Williams Show' (weekdays, syndicated), Crow said that James Durbin and Lauren Alaina will take the last two slots in the singing competition and battle for the win.

"I kind of think that maybe James and maybe Lauren," Crow said. "But, I have to tell you that, they're even more fantastic in the everyday rehearsal situation, because the nerves start happening when they're on stage. They were unbelievable, every one. I could see any one of those five winning."

James Durbin Is 'Emotionally Perfect' Singing 'Without You' on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 4th 2011 11:57PM
James Durbin, 'American Idol'In the video package before his performance, James Durbin had an emotional break when listening to the lyrics of Harry Nilsson/Badfinger's 'Without You.' He channeled that heartache from missing his family into his subsequent performance on 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX).

Starting with an almost haunting lower tone, Durbin worked his way up to his usual stratospheric register, and when the song broke, so did his hold on his emotions. What was left on the stage was a heartfelt moment for the rocker that touched the live audience as well.

"Fighting back through the emotions for you to give a vocal like you gave," Randy Jackson said "No, it wasn't perfect. But it was emotionally perfect."

James Durbin, 'American Idol'James Durbin certainly put on a spectacle when he decided to tackle Muse's 'Uprising' on this week's 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX). He entered the stage with a drum line in full costume sporting a militarized look of his own.

Steven Tyler, in fact, jokingly accused Durbin of taking the outfit from his own closet. "You'd be surprised how expensive it costs to look this cheap," he quipped.

With a much harder rock flare than the original, Durbin also took a chance on a much higher octave during the closing chorus. As Randy Jackson revealed, this was a challenge presented to Durbin by Muse lead singer Matthew Bellamy.

Chris Jericho, 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno'It's a pretty big deal to be a celebrity contestant on 'Dancing With the Stars.' It is, after all, the No. 2 show on television. Both 'American Idol' and 'DWTS' tape in the same studio, so Jericho has had opportunities to meet some of the contestants. He and James Durbin have become friends, and he even helped Pia Toscano make a possible love connection.

In relaying the story, he broke into an amazing Pia impression, too. "Oh, I really like Mark Ballas and he's so pretty," Jericho said she told him, and so he simply facilitated the exchanging of phone numbers.

James Durbin Brings Zakk Wylde and 'Heavy Metal' to 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 14th 2011 12:13AM
James Durbin & Zakk Wylde, 'American Idol'James Durbin was determined to bring authentic heavy metal to the 'American Idol' (Wed., 8PM ET on FOX) stage, and he did just that. Despite Jimmy Iovine telling him he should change his song, he stuck to his guns, singing Sammy Hagar's 'Heavy Metal' from the cult film of the same name.

It was a raw and authentic performance. Durbin even invited former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde to join him on stage, and gave up some of his precious time so Wylde could have a killer guitar solo.

"Who would have ever thought that on 'American Idol' we would have metal?" Jennifer Lopez said. "Like, heavy metal, like pure heavy metal. That was crazy!"

TMZ Gives the Contestants a Crash Course in Being in the Spotlight on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 7th 2011 11:38PM
trip to TMZ, 'American Idol'In past seasons, the folks at 'TMZ' have followed around various 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) contestants, keeping fans in the loop as to what they're doing now, and in some cases what they've done in the past. It hasn't always been good news.

This season, however, the Idols got a chance to get back at them a little when they went to TMZ's offices for "some serious media training," according to executive producer Harvey Levin.

There wasn't a lot of practical training, though. They advised Paul McDonald to use spit to style his hair if he ever gets arrested and suggested Haley Reinhart try to turn her lipstick-on-the-face incident into an endorsement.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.
