Emeril Lagasse Cooking Up New Series, Mike Tyson 'Breaking In' to Primetime, and More

by AOL TV Staff, posted Apr 14th 2011 12:45AM
Emeril Lagasse is back in the kitchen -- but he won't be dishing out the food. The Cooking Channel announced Wednesday a May 5 debut for 'The Originals With Emeril,' a new series that sees Lagasse hitting the road to pay tribute to iconic food establishments that have helped shape the country's culinary landscape. While the restaurant business is risky, challenging and faddish, and the life of a restaurant can sometimes be short, every city has cherished institutions that have stood the test of time. In each 30-minute episode, Lagasse will visit a new city and go behind-the-scenes at three historic eateries -- speaking with the chefs and customers to help reveal their fascinating stories.

The Cooking Channel also revealed several other new primetime offerings, including shows that look at street food, pastry chefs and Spanish foods: 'Eat St.' (premiering April 12), 'Unique Sweets' (April 24), 'From Spain With Love' (May 27) and 'Hook, Line & Dinner' (June 7).

The Food Network, meanwhile, also announced a slew of new series: Ashley Vicos' 'Have Cake, Will Travel,' premiering April 26, 'Best in Smoke' (May 8), 'Crave' (June 20) and, later this year, 'Heat Seekers,' 'Tough Cookies,' 'Chef Hunte' and 'Sugar High.' [The Hollywood Reporter]

Amber Riley Talks Justin Bieber 'Glee' Episode, No '30 Rock' Baby for Jane Krakowski and More

by Jean Bentley, posted Jan 18th 2011 11:50AM
Justin BieberWe know (despite some controversy) that the cast of 'Glee' will channel Justin Bieber in an upcoming episode. Now star Amber Riley has confirmed which of the Biebs' tunes they'll cover: 'Baby' and 'Somebody to Love.'

"There's gonna be two Bieber songs, and I think 'Baby' is one. I think that's correct," she told MTV at the Golden Globes. 'Somebody to Love' is the other. "I think ... those are the two songs," she said.

Creator Ryan Murphy said recently that "Bieber comes up in episode 13 as a small plot point. Sam sings a J.B. song to win Quinn's approval."

In other TV news ...

Another 'Glee' character will be belting a tune in an upcoming episode. Dot Marie Jones confirmed at the Globes that her character, Coach Bieste, will sing during the Feb. 22 episode. "I told [the writers] that I wanted to sing AC/DC, but I'm going to be singing honkey tonk," she said. [The Hollywood Reporter]

The final episode of 'Rescue Me' is scheduled to air on Sept. 6. The ending of the show will coincide with the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks -- fitting, since Denis Leary created the series after watching firefighters deal with the aftermath of the day. [THR]

Jane Krakowski may be pregnant in real life, but -- thank goodness -- her bundle of joy won't be written into '30 Rock.' Jenna Maroney is pretty awesome, but she would be the world's worst mother. [Entertainment Weekly]

'30 Rock' Live Episode: The Cast Previews the Show

by Kelly Woo, posted Oct 13th 2010 6:20PM
30 RockLive from New York ... it's '30 Rock'!

The comedy is taking a page from its NBC sibling 'Saturday Night Live' and airing a live episode Thu., Oct. 14. East Coast viewers will see it first at 8:30PM ET and another version will air for West Coast audiences at 11:30PM ET.

The idea for a live episode came from a benefit performance the cast did during the writers' strike in 2007. And since Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan cut their teeth on 'SNL,' and Jane Krakowski is a Broadway veteran, a live episode seemed like it'd be a piece of cake. The show even took over 'SNL's' home in Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center.

I spoke to Fey, Morgan, Krakowski and Jack McBrayer about their hopes (and fears) for the live show. Plus, they dished about doing a musical episode and their dream guest stars (if there are any left!).

Emmy Picks: Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy

by Joel Keller, posted Jul 22nd 2010 5:04PM
Julie Bowen, Jane Krakowski, Jane Lynch, Holland Taylor, Sofia Vergara, Kristen Wiig - Emmy nominees for best suppoting comedy actress
Over the next few days, I'll be listing the Emmy nominees in the major categories and giving you picks and possible dark horses. Feel free to agree, disagree, and make your own picks in the comments.

Yesterday, I made my pick in the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama category. Today, I look at what seems to be the biggest lock of the night: the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy category.

Nominees:
Julie Bowen, 'Modern Family'
Jane Krakowski, '30 Rock'
Jane Lynch, 'Glee'
Holland Taylor, 'Two and a Half Men'
Sofia Vergara, 'Modern Family'
Kristen Wiig, 'Saturday Night Live'

Who will win: Jane Lynch. No doubt about it. 'Glee' was the most popular new show of the season, and she was the most popular member of that show's humongous cast. Lynch deserved all the press she got; even though her character of Sue Sylvester drifted into cartoonish territory at times, she was compelling to watch, and her presence was missed in the few episodes where she was rarely or not used. Also, Lynch is a veteran character actor finally getting her chance to shine. The Academy loves those kinds of stories.

'30 Rock' - 'Argus' Recap

30 Rock
(S04E19) "I know this is a difficult time for you, but word of advice: if the will says that you have to spend the night in a haunted house, you better hope that everyone else there are black people or sluts." - Liz

It's always fun to try to figure out what a '30 Rock' episode title refers to. Who would have thought that last week's "Khonani" referred to the name of an NBC janitor (and a sly Conan reference)? Who could have guessed what exactly "Lee Marvin vs. Derek Jeter" meant a couple of weeks ago? Or even "Anna Howard Shaw Day," though we could have Googled that and at least had some idea. The same thing with this week's show. What/who the heck is Argus?

I really wish it didn't refer to a peacock.

'30 Rock' - 'Khonani' Recap

(S04E18) "Well it was off for awhile because my fiance was on his dad's yacht and got captured by pirates, but now, thanks to the A-Team, he's back." - Cerie (on her upcoming wedding)

It was only a matter of time before '30 Rock' addressed the whole NBC late night debacle. With the way the network has been running things of late, it's getting downright easy to be a writer for this show. Set in a fictionalized version of the peacock, all the comedy material they could ever hope for is just handed to them.

(S04E17) "Thank you, Lemon, but my true present is that exquisite ensemble. You look like a prison weed dealer." - Jack to Liz, on her singles dodge ball outfit.

Jack, Jack, Jack! I guess there are worse things than having to choose between gorgeous Elizabeth Banks and beautiful Julianne Moore on your 51st birthday. I'm with Liz, though. Guys have it easy. They just get more distinguished and stately as they get older. Girls get flabby arms and wrinkles. " You're juggling two beautiful women while I have to pay to have kick balls whipped at me," says Liz. "This is gender inequity out the yang."

'30 Rock' - 'Floyd' Recap

30 Rock
(S04E16) "Whuck?!" - Liz's shortened version of "What the F**k?"

This was one of those episodes of '30 Rock' where the Jenna and Tracy plot (yes, they seem to have plots together 97% of the time) really dragged the show down. Every line seemed forced, every scene seemed to be filled with over the top wackiness, and the whole thing just felt like desperation filler, as if even the writers knew they're running out of ideas on how to get Jenna and Tracy and Kenneth into the plot. Even Kenneth recognized it and told Pete that he has problems with Jenna and Tracy so often he should come up with a word that means the same thing, "Trennapro."

That's funny and I'm sure '30 Rock' reviewers will use that word to describe a Jenna/Tracy plot, but the rest of it just made me sigh and cross my arms (except for a couple of lines Kenneth said telling his stories). I mean, I enjoyed the killer clown mask that Chris Parnell wore in the Dr. Pepper commercial at the end of the show. Why couldn't Dr. Spaceman have been one of the plots this week?

Al Roker Plans Jane Krakowski's Wedding on 'Today' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 23rd 2010 12:30PM
After Jane Krakowski of '30 Rock' jokes about having her wedding live on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC), Al Roker enthusiastically latches onto the idea and tries to persuade her to do just that.

"We've never done a celebrity wedding! You could be our first!" Roker said loudly. "Just pick a date and then show up." Krakowski agrees, but her expression tells us she doesn't mean it.

'30 Rock' - 'Don Geiss, America, and Hope' Recap

(S04E15) "This is an exciting time for NBC. Not 'Friends,' 'Seinfeld,' 'ER' exciting, more like 3-D episodes of 'Merlin' exciting.' - Jack

I wonder if NBC killed off Don Geiss (that's him in the Han Solo-like cryogenic freeze thing above - another 'Star Wars' reference) because of Rip Torn's real-life problems? Sure, this episode was probably filmed before his latest escapade, but similar things had happened in the past, and maybe they didn't want to have to have him come back on the show now and then. Then again, Geiss had a lot of health problems in the past and almost died once already, so maybe his death was already in the works. And it certainly works as a sign that things are changing at NBC now that GE has sold it to Kabletown.

Review: '30 Rock' - 'Verna'

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 5th 2010 1:00AM
30 Rock(S04E12) "It was perfect. Like a John Mayer song." - Jenna, on meeting with her mom

There's a 1984 episode of 'Kate & Allie' titled 'New Year's Eve' where Kate and Allie make a bet: Kate has to give up smoking and Allie has to give up eating chocolate (never mind that we never even saw Kate smoke before, but that's another story). Sound familiar? OK, so Liz had to stay away from all junk food and not just chocolate, but still, that was one of the plots of tonight's '30 Rock.' It's an old staple with sitcoms, of course, I just didn't think that '30 Rock' would necessarily go there.

I also don't want to see yet another character have to stay at Liz's apartment. Pete has stayed there, Tracy, and now Frank. Who's next, Jack? Kenneth? Luckily, even a couple of creaky plots can't completely hurt an episode of this show because there are so many great jokes flying at you from all directions.

Sneak Peek: This Week's '30 Rock'

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 2nd 2010 12:02PM
This week we finally meet Jenna Maloney's mother, Verna, on '30 Rock.' Not that we've heard too much about her, I don't think, but it will be interesting to see where she came from (I'd also like to meet the sister who peed in Jenna's eye).

She's not in this clip below, but Verna is played by ex-'SNL' star Jan Hooks.

(S04E11) "They're all named Sean, they're mean, and I hate it here." - Kenneth, about Boston

Being from Boston myself, I'm really enjoying these Boston (and Waltham)-centric episodes of 30 Rock. I often cringe at shows that have episodes set around this area. They'll get a location wrong or make dumb assumptions about us or get an accent wrong (more on that after the jump), but this show is getting a lot of little things wrong. Even the street scenes were well done, with the brick and all that.

And wait... Nancy mentioned Kelly's Roast Beef and, holy crap, Jack and Nancy actually imitated Chet Curtis and Natalie Jacobson? That is 55 kinds of awesome. Someone at 30 Rock knows Boston well.
