Conan O'Brien Gets the Shaft

by Scott Harris, posted Jan 8th 2010 12:26PM
When NBC announced in September of 2004 that they had signed 'Late Night' host Conan O'Brien to a deal that would see him take over 'The Tonight Show' from Jay Leno, O'Brien appeared to be on top of the world. After yesterday's round of rumors, though, it now appears that he's edging closer to the end of the world.

According to multiple reports, it appears that NBC has decided return Leno to the key 11:30 time slot. This follows a year of controversy and turmoil for the network, which first angered Leno by yanking him from 'The Tonight Show' despite being on top of the ratings and then exacerbated the situation by putting him on nightly in the 10 p.m. slot. That decision has led to a massive hemorrhaging of ratings for the network and affiliates who rely on a strong lead in to their lucrative local news broadcasts.

Jay Leno May Move Back to Late Night

by Scott Harris, posted Jan 7th 2010 2:50PM
Since its fall debut, 'The Jay Leno Show' has been a ratings disappointment and a source of controversy among NBC affiliates, so when reports surfaced earlier today that the series had been canceled it wasn't much of a shock. No, the real shock is that Leno may not be getting fired -- he may be getting a promotion.

Yes, according to TMZ, Leno will be returning to the 11:30 time slot and, presumably, the chair at 'The Tonight Show.' What this means for Conan O'Brien and his replacement at 'Late Night,' Jimmy Fallon, is unclear.

Best TV of the '00s: Celebrities

by Danny Gallagher, posted Dec 30th 2009 2:02PM

More of our best of the decade coverage, which started on Tuesday. You can read the other posts at the link above. Here, we talk about a very aught-like phenomenon: the cult of celebrity.

There is no clearer metaphor for the concept of being a celebrity than the Hollywood Walk of Fame. You work hard to chase your dream and achieve a career for yourself by making your name known to the masses of the universe.

Then when you've grabbed that star and become a regular fixture in the flash bulb of the press' cameras, how does the public honor your tireless toil and efforts? They throw you down on a sidewalk and walk all over you.

In the Aughts, however, a new celebrity oozed out of the primordial muck. A celebrity that still suffered the slings and arrows of the tabloid press and a complete loss of the right to privacy, but achieved their stardom by simply cutting out all that pesky hard work and tireless effort nonsense. These are the celebrities who became famous by simply because they were famous.

TV's Most Un-Fascinating People of 2009

by Gary Susman, posted Dec 9th 2009 3:53PM
As Barbara Walters prepares to show viewers her annual list of the 10 Most Fascinating People of the Year (pictured, featuring Lady Gaga and Walters) in a special airing tonight, we realized that TV gives far too much airtime to people at the other end of the spectrum. With that thought, here are the year's 10 least fascinating people on TV. Let's all try to make it a New Year's resolution that we won't be talking about these people's overexposure again a year from now.

TV Moment of 2009: Jay Leno Premieres at 10PM

by Allyssa Lee, posted Dec 6th 2009 12:00PM
It all started five years ago, in 2004, when NBC announced that Conan O'Brien would take over Jay Leno's plum spot as the host of the 'Tonight Show.' Come 2009 and Leno, after spending 17 years as Johnny Carson's successor, would be out of a desk job.

But then last December, NBC made another striking announcement, heralding that Leno would, in fact, return to the network this fall. And it would be in the form of a talk show. Only, this one would air every weeknight at 10PM.

The decision was introduced as a cost-saving move by the struggling network, as talk shows are much less expensive to produce than the dramas that usually air during that 10PM hour. It also was a way to put an end to the threat that Leno, a popular late-night host with an ability to attract big-name talent and who regularly beat out rival Letterman in the 11:35PM slot, would take his affability and move to ABC.

But a primetime slot? It was a move that seemed to surprise Leno as much as anyone else. "A lot of people were shocked," the host joked last December. "They didn't know NBC still had a prime time."

Viewers at 10PM Would Rather Watch DVR Shows Than 'Jay Leno' -- or Anything Else

by Gary Susman, posted Nov 30th 2009 2:10PM
The Jay Leno Show premiereDon't blame Jay Leno. NBC's risky experiment, gutting its 10PM drama slate to air Leno's low-budget variety hour five nights a week, may not have paid off in ratings, and the move may have made NBC an easy target for scorn and ridicule. But Nielsen ratings numbers suggest that no one could have slowed the slide during the final hour of primetime.

According to the Associated Press, the 10PM hour has become the time when viewers catch up with the shows on their DVR queues. So viewership of first-run shows at 10PM is down at all of the big three broadcast networks.

by Danny Gallagher, posted Nov 11th 2009 5:29PM
If you're anything like me (first of all, God help you), then you've noticed that The Jay Leno Show is slowly starting to morph into the old Tonight Show.

Thankfully, Deal or No Deal host Howie Mandel finally put the last nail in The Jay Leno Show's coffin by giving the big faced host his own desk.

Mariah Carey Trips on 'The Jay Leno Show' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Nov 3rd 2009 11:10AM
While wearing what barely qualifies as a dress, Mariah Carey has a shoe malfunction and trips on 'The Jay Leno Show' as she makes her way to the interview chair.

Carey later joked during the interview the stumble was choreographed in order to to make Leno nervous. And perhaps as a further way to distract Leno and the audience from her two left feet, Carey demonstrates the appropriate way to seductively apply perfume. Pay close attention to Leno's flustered response.

Get some Halloween decorating tips from The Office's Rainn Wilson

by Danny Gallagher, posted Oct 24th 2009 6:37PM
Halloween is just around the corner and if you're anything like me (first of all, you have my deepest sympathies), then you haven't done squat to get ready for for it. And what a to-do list that is! The shopping list alone can send Martha Stewart into an early coma: eggs, shaving cream, toilet paper, paper bags, lighters, dog poo. That last one makes it even more difficult when you realize stores no longer sell dog poo.

But don't worry, Rainn Wilson is here to help. In order to "Earn His Plug" on his recent appearance on Jay Leno's new show, he gave the audience a crash course in Halloween vandalism by messing with a special celebrity's house, someone who I normally thought wouldn't have a problem with bologna shingles on his walls.

Jay Leno's ratings may be in question, but Martha Stewart's ability to keep a younger man clearly isn't. Stewart admits on 'The Jay Leno Show' she once dated a man significantly younger than herself. In fact, she describes her toy boy as being only a month older than her daughter at the time. Treasure it.
