One State to Rule Them All in 2010: The Year of New Jersey
by Joel Keller, posted Dec 23rd 2010 10:00AM
Festivus is here! On the first day of Festivus, TV gave to us ... one state to rule them all! When we were deciding on what to put in our Festivus countdown, it was pretty obvious what we would talk about on the day itself. A theme permeated much of the television landscape in 2010, especially in the reality category, and it had to do with a part of our country that's small but densely populated, often derided but misunderstood, and where you can get a pretty damn good slice of pizza just about anytime you want.
Yes, I'm talking about New Jersey.
As a lifelong resident of the Garden State, I quickly volunteered to write about TV's Jersey obsession in 2010, mainly because my relationship with these shows mirrors how I feel about the state itself. Like the shows that depict it, New Jersey is frustrating, annoying and downright ugly at times; at others, it (and they) can be entertaining as hell. And while TV gave people a skewed version of the state this past year, at least it was fun to watch.

Christina said she has other plans besides working in the family dress shop. However, her family isn't thrilled with them on 'Jersey Couture' (Tue., 10PM on OXY)."You know, cooking and baking is what I wanted to do ... maybe one day I could open up a catering business," Christina said.
Her mom doesn't want her to take a cooking class during the busy season and her dad thinks she won't have the energy for night classes. "How are we going to function?" her mom asked. "We can't even function now."
"I wake up in the morning, yes I do mommy's dream, I don't do my dream."
"Sexy" Ladies on 'Jersey Couture' (VIDEO)

Hey, it's 'Jersey Couture' (Tue., 10PM ET on Oxygen). The reality show is like the less-loved distant cousin of 'Jersey Shore' -- the two shows' names even rhyme! But where 'Jersey Shore' features sex, hot-tubbing, and Snooki getting punched, this series features ... women trying on hats. Which might be the reason why 'Couture' is a little less popular. On the latest episode, sisters Chrissy and Kimberly Scali head to Colorado in order to work on a dress for a client. While there, the Jersey girls decide to take in some of the local color. So they end up trying on western cowboy hats. Chrissy asks the store clerk for confirmation of her "sexiness," and he confesses that he would "do her."
That's nice, but it still can't compare to the greatest show ever made -- 'Jersey Shore.' Here's some free advice, 'Couture.' You need to add more sex and more hot tubs. Quickly. Soon. Please.
'Jersey Couture' Throws a Belated (and Tacky) "Sweet 16" Party (VIDEO)

'Jersey Couture' (Tue., 10PM ET on Oxygen) is a reality show about the Scali family, who run a dress store in New Jersey. Now, you might be asking yourself why the world needs a show about a family running a dress store ... in New Jersey. And as soon as we come up with the answer to that one, we'll get back to you.On the latest episode, the family gets sick of hearing younger daughter Chrissy complain about how she never got to have a "Sweet 16" birthday party. It doesn't matter that Chrissy is now currently 27 years old ... the family decides to throw her a surprise party anyway!
Getting Physical With a Patron on 'Jersey Couture' (VIDEO)
by Chris Harnick, posted Jun 2nd 2010 10:00AM
If we've learned one thing from all these shows set in New Jersey, it's that residents of that fine state are not afraid to speak their mind.On 'Jersey Couture' (Tue., 10PM ET on OXY), the ladies weren't afraid to get a little physical and tell it like it is. "You got back fat? I'm going to tell you if you've got back fat," Kimberly said. Then, Kimberly and her mom, Diane, got very personal with a patron. Diane stuffed her hands down the woman's dress, adjusting her breasts.
"I am a boobologist, look at those bad boys!" Diane said.
