'Shameless' Confessions: Joan Cusack Talks About Her Comedic Role on the Showtime Drama

by Maureen Ryan, posted Feb 22nd 2011 3:05PM
Joan Cusack, a lifelong Chicagoan, doesn't have much of a commute when 'Shameless' is shooting exterior scenes in her home town.

But one of ironies of her role on the Showtime drama is that Cusack's character, Sheila Jackson, is an agoraphobic, so exterior scenes are not something the actress frequently gets to do. One unseasonably warm day last fall, when the show's cast and crew were a filming a series of outdoor scenes in a hardscrabble West Side neighborhood, all Cusack had to do was appear briefly inside Sheila's house and clap near a window.

"I can't see not leaving your house in five years, but I can see feeling like, you know, [life is] overwhelming sometimes," Cusack said later in an interview on the set.

William H. Macy Used to Babysit 'Shameless' Co-Star Joan Cusack and Brother John Cusack (VIDEO)

William H. Macy, 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'Have you ever imagined that Hollywood stars all grew up together and interacted even when they were younger, and well before they were famous? Well, in one neighborhood in Chicago, that's exactly what happened.

At least, that's what William H. Macy told Jimmy Fallon on 'Late Night' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC).

If it's true -- and he says it's his story and he's sticking to it -- both the Cusacks and the Pivens lived nearby. So while he knew Jeremy Piven, it was at the Cusack household that he had more interactions.

"They would hire me to do light carpentry," he revealed, indicating that a set of shelves he built are still in that house.

'Shameless' Questions: Did Macy Babysit Cusack? What's T-Bag Doing in Chicago?

by Maureen Ryan, posted Nov 22nd 2010 1:10PM
A recent visit to the set of 'Shameless,' the Chicago-set drama that premieres Jan. 9 on Showtime, held a few surprises.

William H. Macy, Joan Cusack and Emmy Rossum and the rest of the show's cast spent last week on Chicago's West Side, filming exterior season for the first season of the show, which is mostly shot in Los Angeles. On the drama, which is an adaptation of a well-regarded U.K. TV series, Macy plays Frank, the sozzled patriarch of the Gallagher clan, Rossum plays his eldest daughter, Fiona, and Cusack plays their agoraphobic neighbor, Sheila.

The cast was in fine form and there was no drama except when the cameras were rolling. No surprises there.

The biggest 'Shameless' shock? The fact that it was about 70 degrees and sunny all week long as the cast and crew filmed scenes set in the depths of a Chicago winter. The guy in charge of fake-snow replenishment was kept very busy tossing the white stuff on the streets and sidewalks between takes.

Another surprise? Running into Robert Knepper, a.k.a. T-Bag from 'Prison Break' on the 'Shameless' set. He's guesting in a couple of episodes as a goon sent to get money from Frank. That's Macy, with Knepper on foot in the background, in the photo at right.

Joan Cusack Accuses an Innocent Man of Her Daughter's Kidnapping on 'Law & Order: SVU' (VIDEO)

'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'Another season, another crime. It was back to the grind on 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' (Wed., 9PM on NBC), with Joan Cusack on board for the premiere as a worried mother. Her character's daughter had gone missing, and through the tracking of an online chat, they knew the girl would be at Grand Central Station.

When Mulch (Richard Belzer) tried to order the trains shut down for half an hour, an attendant replied, "Yeah, that's not gonna happen."

We would have thought a case involving a potentially abducted child would be enough to shut down a public transportation hub. If something were to happen to the girl, does the station really want it on their heads that they could have prevented it simply by shutting down for a while to allow the police to conduct a search.

Joan Cusack Makes a Mess in Bonnie Hunt's Kitchen (VIDEO)

by Harley W. Lond, posted May 11th 2010 6:37PM
Look out for the cookie monsters on Tuesday's 'The Bonnie Hunt Show' (weekdays, syndicated).

Joan Cusack joined Hunt in a kitchen segment to talk about the charity Cusack supports, Cookies for Kids' Cancer, which helps cancer research through bake sales. Cusack shared her recipe for Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies, but something went terribly wrong during the mixing of flour, eggs and milk, and batter went flying everywhere, particularly on Hunt, who quipped "I look like I've been mugged." But it was for a good cause.

Joan Cusack: The TV Squad Interview

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 21st 2009 12:02PM
Joan Cusack from Acceptance on LifetimeJoan Cusack has made a career of finding the comedically crumbling foundations beneath what are at first normal-seeming characters. The two-time Oscar nominee also has a knack for making the most out of her roles, and in the new Lifetime movie Acceptance, both of her greatest skills are on display.

In the movie, which debuts on Saturday at 9PM ET, Cusack plays Nina Rockefeller, the hard-driving and high-strung mother of the movie's protagonist, Taylor (played by Mae Whitman of Arrested Development). The movie examines the pressure on high school overachievers to go to just the "right" college, and the story is told in a way that looks at it from both the students' and the parents' perspectives.

Cusack called me from Chicago (where she lives full-time) earlier this week. We talked about college pressures, if the notion of a Lifetime movie has changed, and why she loves working with her brother John so damn much.
