VeepAlong with the preview of 'Luck' -- check out Maureen Ryan's thoughts on that here -- HBO unleashed two very different, yet still amusing, previews for its two new comedies, 'Veep' and 'Girls.'

In 'Veep' (premiering April 2012), Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as the vice president of the United States. As if we should be so lucky. From the ultra short, yet intriguing promo below, it's safe to say we're in for some laughs.

'Girls' comes from 'Tiny Furniture' writer/star Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow. HBO describes the show as a "comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s." Dunham's 'Tiny Furniture' co-star Jemima Kirke, 'NBC Nightly News' anchor Brian Williams' daughter Allison Williams, stage actor Adam Driver and 'Mad Men's' Zosia Mamet also star. 'Girls' also has an April 2012 premiere date.

Check out both previews below.

Emmy Picks: Best Lead Actress in a Comedy

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 24th 2010 11:25AM
The nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy at the 2010 Emmys
With the Emmy awards less than a week away, I'm continuing to pick who I think should and who I think will win the major awards.

Yesterday, I discussed the Best Lead Actor in a Drama category. Today we look at the comedy side of the ledger and the Best Lead Actress in a Comedy category.

Nominees:
Toni Collette, 'United States of Tara'
Edie Falco, 'Nurse Jackie'
Tina Fey, '30 Rock'
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'
Lea Michele, 'Glee'
Amy Poehler, 'Parks and Recreation'

Who will win:
When I saw that Edie Falco had submitted the pilot for 'Nurse Jackie,' it hit me that she didn't get nominated for the show last year. Since the pilot aired about a week after the 2010 eligibility period started, the Academy has had well over a year to ruminate over Falco's strong out-of-the-gate performance in that pilot, where the entire web of lies Jackie has set up get revealed in a quick 30 minutes. Considering her Emmy history -- seven nominations, three wins -- it's very easy to see Falco standing on stage with the Emmy this year.

Emmy Gets Daring ... But Not Daring Enough

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony ShalhoubTony Shalhoub again? Really?

Leave it to the folks at the Television Academy to always look for a safe port in the storm when it comes to the Emmy nominations.

In a year that saw an almost record number of quality new shows debut, established shows have fantastic seasons, fan favorites like 'Lost' and '24' bow out and network comedy making a comeback, you would think that the Academy's voters would have plenty of opportunities to throw caution to the wind and nominate a bunch of deserving shows that were either new or never got much Emmy recognition before.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Talks About Hollywood Misspelling Her Name (VIDEO)

by Harley W. Lond, posted May 11th 2010 7:05PM
The first thing you're taught in journalism school is never, never, ever misspell someone's name. It does happen, of course, no matter how many times you double-check things.

But misspelling a name in print (or online) is a lot different than misspelling a name on a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is exactly what happened to Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Louis-Dreyfus was on Tuesday's edition of 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' (weekdays, syndicated), and she related the entire sordid affair. (She got her star on May 4.)

To make matters worse, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce tried a temporary fix, which botched it even more. Sounds like an episode from 'Seinfeld.'

Stripping and Hooking on 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted May 5th 2010 9:55PM
Stripping and Hooking on 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'There's a slight case of mistaken identity on 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' (Wed., 8PM ET on CBS). A policeman visits Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) to warn her about a prowler in the neighborhood. Since the cop is very good-looking and named "Officer Johnson," Christine comes to the somewhat odd conclusion that he's a male stripper dressed as a cop. Quite naturally, this mistake leads to a few awkward moments.

After clearing up the confusion, Christine attempts to spin the whole "stripper" thing as being a compliment. The policeman takes it all in stride, and zings Christine back. "Thank you," he says in reply. "For the record, you could be a hooker."
