Fan Expo 2010 Day 2: Batcondoms, David Cronenberg Honored, and Mighty Stan Lee
by Aaron Broverman, posted Aug 29th 2010 2:01PM
Before I get to the Fan Expo Day 2 festivities, let me just say the crowd on Friday was only a sign of things to come. Today, police had to shut down half the street for the line-up because 3,000 people showed up before the doors were scheduled to open. Later, the convention center doors were barred because the place reached capacity, and would violate the fire code if any more people were let in.The only thing that slightly softened the blow was an extension of the convention by an hour, but an informal poll I conducted found that most people had never seen the convention this packed in all the years they've ever attended. As I made my way through the horde, the chaos seemed to be attributed to the popularity of one person, and some variation on the following could be overheard in the line: "I want to punch Stan Lee in the face for this!"
Julie Newmar Talks Catwoman, the Dynamic Duo and Whether Angelina Jolie Could Wear the Catsuit
by Aaron Broverman, posted Aug 26th 2010 10:15PM
Some ladies still have it -- that classic pin-up beauty that's tough to find anymore -- and Julie Newmar is certainly one of those women. She has the look and the attitude to match, even though she hasn't donned the Catwoman costume that goes with her signature role in over 40 years. According to Newmar, her body still slinks, but on the phone her voice does too. Every syllable still drips with the purr of a cat, and she's bringing the whole package to Toronto this weekend for Fan Expo -- a cross-genre fan convention. But she's not coming alone. The 60s-era caped crusader and boy wonder (Adam West and Burt Ward) are also coming along to foil any evil plot she may be hatching at the autograph booth. Don't get me wrong -- Ms. Newmar isn't solely defined by her 'Batman' TV series character. This cat has nine lives, including one as a writer and yet another as a road trip totem to a posse of drag queens in 'Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.'
Still, it's Catwoman that makes the boys and girls take notice, but no matter which camp you're in -- Lee Meriwether or the late Eartha Kitt -- Julie Newmar is truly an original, both in the role and in person. TV Squad caught up with the television temptress as she prepares to come to Toronto for the very first time.
Sci-fi TV show concepts you never saw
by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 30th 2008 9:08AM
Okay, here's a good one found via Pop Candy...someone listed six of the best Sci Fi television shows that you never saw (meaning that they lasted only a season or less). If a young Julie Newmar is a robot, is she the first fem-bot? I suppose in many ways she's a sex toy ahead of her time.
I like the concepts behind Alternative 3 (a documentary about a group of people who have abandoned the planet Earth as a lost cause) and The Ultimate Imposter (an agent with a chip in his head to give him a different personality each week). I see elements of the latter in Joss Whedon's new series Dollhouse.
Sweeps stunts are tame in February
by Anna Johns, posted Feb 3rd 2006 8:11AM
November sweeps stunts brought us stormtroopers on The
Apprentice, a live debate on The West Wing, a dead chick on Lost and Medium in 3-D. Why
are February ratings so tame? One word: Olympics.NBC is expected to kick some television tail when it covers the Olympics every single night from February 10-26. Going into this month, the networks are touting some pretty uninteresting guest stars on the shows that need a boost. And that's about it. Oh, there is also going to be some sh*t going down on The O.C., but you don't want the spoilers, do you?
Here are some highlights for February sweeps, which began yesterday and run through March 1:
