Standoff stops production (but not for the reason you might think)
The new FOX hostage negotiation drama Standoff has stopped production for a week, but not because the show is being shelved. It's actually a "writer's break," so they can get caught up (since they start the new season before the other networks) and new consulting producer Tim Minear comes on board to help out.
So, those of you who had Standoff in our contest can stop jumping up and down now and go back to watching television.
Justice and Happy Hour going on early hiatus
And here we go. If you work on a network television series, one of the worst things you can hear is that your show is going 'on hiatus'. Sure, every once in a while that just means that the show is taking a little break. But more often than not it's the PC way for executives to tell you that the ratings numbers suck out loud and you need to start looking for a new gig. With that in mind, Fox has placed Justice and Happy Hour on an early hiatus. Early because it was expected that most of the network's shows would get a little break when the baseball playoffs take over the schedule. But Happy Hour and Justice will be starting their break early, being replaced by repeats of 'Til Death and House.
Right now, the Fox website says that Happy Hour will return Nov.2, with no word on when Justice is supposed to resume. Of course, this makes the TV Squad contest to pick the first show to get canceled a whole big ball of fun. We'll have to wait and see if these shows are officially canceled. Stay tuned.

Justice: Addicts

(S01E04) I really enjoyed Tom Nicholson's (Kerr Smith) storyline in this episode. We get to see his weaknesses as he loses sight of his job when his relationship with a client clouds his judgment. Plus, someone else gets to try a case for once.
The episode opens with a man falling from a skyscraper and then the shaky camera work begins. This week's victim is Daniel Benson, son of legendary studio head Scott Benson. The victim's girlfriend, Molly Larusa, is missing. The two were dating in rehab, which is where Benson plummeted to his death. TNT&G fits into the equation because the missing girl's father is their client, Frank Larusa.
CBS wins Wednesday, Kidnapped not so much
As predicted, CBS won the first Wednesday of the new season, with strong numbers for both Criminal Minds at 9 and CSI: NY at 10.
ABC won the 8pm time slot with Dancing With The Stars (side note: does it amaze anyone else that this show and all reality shows are still doing so well? Kinda makes me ill). At 10, CSI: NY beat out a Grey's Anatomy repeat and the debut of Kidnapped, which got a 5.1 rating/8 share (translation: NBC can't be happy about those numbers). Too bad. I think Kidnapped is a cool show.
For you Jericho fans: it came in second in the 8pm slot, while the CW's America's Next Top Model somehow got more viewers and a better demographic than FOX's Justice (though Justice had a higher rating - however that works).
What's on tonight: Jericho, Bones, Biggest Loser, Kidnapped, Next Top Model
At 8, ABC has a new Dancing With The Stars. - CBS has the series premiere of Jericho at 8, followed by the season premieres of Criminal Minds and CSI: NY.
- FOX has a new Bones at 8, followed by a new Justice.
- NBC has the two hour season premiere of The Biggest Loser at 8, followed by the series premiere of Kidnapped.
- The CW Network makes it's bow with the two hour season premiere of America's Next Top Model at 8.
- MyTV has a new Desire at 8, followed by a new Fashion House.
- At 10, Food Network has a new Good Eats.
- Discovery has a new Stunt Junkies at 10.
- There's a new Criss Angel Mindfreak at 10 on A&E.
- Also at 10: HBO has a new Inside the NFL.
Justice: Behind the Orange Curtain

(S01E03) Good opening sequence. We see a guy strangle a girl, then learn it's on a film set, and then we see it's a reenactment for smarmy American Crime. A chick named Beth, who is about to be married, disappears after getting a ride home from a bartender, Jake Garcia.
Garcia has some good evidence against him. He lied to the police about giving Beth a ride home, her sweater is in his car, and so is her blood (which he says came from a cut to her foot). It looks like the cops are going to ambush Garcia at TNT&G offices, but Ron Trott (Victor Garber) turns the tables by parading his client in front of the media and offering a $1 million reward for the safe return of Beth, who may or may not be a runaway bride.
Anna's Fall TV Schedule
There are a handful of shows that I gave up this year, including The O.C., The New Adventures of Old Christine, Saturday Night Live, and CSI. It's not because of time constraints, it's because those shows are stupid. Looking at my television schedule, I see that my Mondays are super light and my Wednesdays are incredibly packed. I only have two TiVos, so we'll have to catch Mythbusters and South Park when they replay later in the week.Sundays

Justice: Pretty Woman

(S01E02) Oh my God. Did anybody else get dizzy while watching this? Maybe the target audience on this show is the MTV crowd. Jeez. All the handheld camerawork, quick edits and zooms made me queasy. That seemed new. Also new this week were the banners for different times in the case (i.e. 'Self Surrender', etc.). Kinda hokey and unnecessary. It also seemed like Rebecca Mader's appearance had been softened a bit since the premiere-- a positive change if you ask me. She seemed a little scary and inhuman in the pilot.
The attack of the one word titles
Okay, maybe it's just me. Perhaps I wouldn't have noticed it if I weren't reporting on the television industry. However, I have, and I'm a bit disturbed about it because it could mean the beginning of the downfall of Western civilization as we know it. Yes, it's been said that everything from microwave ovens to Britney Spears would be the downfall, but I really think this is.
What am I talking about? The amount of television shows this season with one word titles, of course. What the heck do you think I was talking about? The Middle East? North Korea? Britney having another baby? Hell, no! I write about television; I don't care about any of those issues!
Seriously, maybe it began with shows like Lost, but it seems like a majority of shows this season are saving a lot on graphics with a one-word title. You doubt me? Well, you always doubt me, but I have proof to back up my theory. Jump ahead and you'll see what I mean.
Justice: Pilot (series premiere)

(S01E01) This show seems like a regular Jerry Bruckheimer, over-the-top procedural right up until the end, doesn't it? Just like on every version of CSI, the attorneys on Justice have all the coolest bells and whistles to help them do their jobs. Only this time, there's a twist at the end. We spend an hour watching a team of attorneys spin a case in their favor... and then we get to see what really happened. I want to know what evil genius conceived of this show and I want to simultaneously shake his/her hand and slap his/her face for suckering me into an hour of television every Wednesday night. 'Cuz I'm hooked.
The Boston Globe rates the new shows

Matthew Gilbert has an interesting article in The Boston Globe, about the new season of shows and how TV shows are now more complicated than ever (but that's a good thing). Not just returning shows like 24 and Lost, but new complex series like DayBreak, Kidnapped, and Vanished.
One page that the print edition of the Globe has that the web site doesn't (at least I couldn't find it) is Gilbert's grades for all the new shows. Quick summary: he thinks the best new shows are The Nine, Studio 60, Heroes, Six Degrees, Smith, The Knights of Prosperity, and Justice. The worst are Happy Hour, Twenty Good Years, and Help Me Help You.
Press Kits Unwrapped: FOX's Justice
First off, let me say that I am very jealous of the sweatshirt that Keith got from the Prison Break press kit. Since I'm covering Justice this season, Keith sent its press kit all the way across the country to my house. FOX didn't quite go all out with this press kit the way it did for Prison Break. No newspaper. Just a stack of office paper with bios for the actors, including a pathetically short bio for Kerr Smith, and a letter from the law firm instructing me to watch the pilot on DVD (also included).TV Squad previews FOX's new shows
Last, but certainly not least, we are giving you a preview of the shows that FOX has planned for the fall season. We've already discussed ABC, CBS, and NBC's new shows. Let's just say that our TiVos are going to be working overtime this fall. For FOX, we're covering comedies Happy Hour, 'Til Death, and The Winner. And the dramas are Justice, Standoff, Vanished, and The Wedding Album. The network was kind enough to send us the DVD screeners but, since we can't technically "review" them, we're just going to give you a short preview and our initial thoughts.
Fox's fantastic fall season premiere dates finally announced
As per the norm of FOX over the last few years, the fourth network (which has been around for almost, gasp, 20 years), will jump out of the starting gate earlier than the other networks with fall season premieres. This is done to give new and returning shows time to build up steam before Major League Baseball takes the stage in early October with playoffs and the World Series.
The new season will begin on Monday, August 21st with the second season premiere of Prison Break and the introduction of the new drama Vanished. On Wednesday, August 30th, Bones will enter its second season, along with new lawyer-drama Justice. Duets, the series that pairs singing stars with celebrities outside the music world, will have its 2-hour premiere a day later. House will step into its third season on Tuesday, September 5th.
The complete listing of premieres can be viewed at Zap2it.com. Save a copy of it, folks, because I'm sure the schedule will change during the first week of premieres, then again after the World Series, then again during the NFL post-season, and then once more when the juggernaut we know as American Idol premieres in January. By the time 2007 rolls around you may just see some of the shows now listed as entries in our 'Short-Lived Shows' category.
