Is There Any Hope for the New Sitcom 'Raising Hope'? (VIDEO)
by Oliver Miller, posted Sep 29th 2010 8:45AM
One of the problems with 'Raising Hope' is that the sitcom is burdened with a fairly dopey title. It's about a guy who learns that he has a baby girl named "Hope," who he then must "raise" -- leading to the dumb pun that is the name of the show. The other problem with the sitcom is ... well, lots of stuff. The set-up is that Jimmy Chance (Lucas Neff) has sex with a woman who turns out to be a murderer. The young lady gives birth to Hope, and then the mom is -- killed in the electric chair. Next, Hope's life is constantly put at risk by the incompetence of Jimmy and his white trash relatives. So already we've got murder, execution, and child endangerment as a combo. Not necessarily a perfect template for a cutesy sitcom.
Review: Scrubs - Our Histories

(S09E04) It was good to see an episode that had a bit more of a balance between the old and the new. Yes, we concentrated a lot on the J.D./Turk "Bro-a-Palooza" and Ted's departure from Sacred Heart. But we also got a fair amount of the students working together. Do Lucy and Cole still need a little bit more of a personality infusion? Sure. But it's hard to keep up comedically with characters who have been developed over the last eight years. This episode gives me hope that eventually they're going to be able to stand on their own.
Scrubs: My Chief Concern

(S08E17) After the roll the show's been on lately, it was kind of weird to see Scrubs hit a bit of a creative pothole right before the series/season/show-as-we-know-it finale. Lots of personal character movement happened during this one, but the laughs were few and far between. And, despite the upheavals, we're still dealing with some of the interns, signifying life goes on at Sacred Heart. It was just a weird mix, and it made for a decent but not great episode.

(S08E08) If anyone is paying attention to the intern-centric webisodes, you probably saw some of this episode coming. In fact, part of a particular webisode made it onto this episode, in a very adorable way.
This week was very Ted-centric, which is always welcome, as Sam Lloyd is one of the more underrated actors on the show. Not only can he play pathetic well, but he's brought a nice musical element to the show. And every so often, when Ted grows a momentary sack and acts like a man, he does a great job of showing long-roiling emotions coming to the surface.
