Kate Winslet Carried Richard Branson's Mother From a House Fire (VIDEO)
by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 31st 2011 1:00AM
Kate Winslet is a hero, though not to hear her tell it. Apparently, in her reality, everybody runs toward a burning fire and carries people down the stairs and to safety. She was more concerned about her support, or lack thereof, on 'The Graham Norton Show' (Sat., 10PM ET on BBC America).Actually, in the moment when a fire broke out at Richard Branson's house, she decided she wasn't concerned at all.
"I started to put on a bra, then I thought, No that's gonna take me too long," she revealed. This was, apparently, a detail the press did not feel their readers needed to know in their reports of the dramatic incident, so Winslet filled us in.
Kate Winslet 'Was Thrilled' With Guy Pearce's Racy Emmy Speech
by Catherine Lawson, posted Sep 19th 2011 6:00AM
Last night 'Mildred Pierce' stars Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce both took home Emmys for their work on the HBO drama, and Pearce's raunchy acceptance speech caused a few raised eyebrows and dropped jaws.Accepting his award from David Boreanaz and Anna Torv, Pearce joked that "I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many, many times."
As Winslet gave him two thumbs up from the audience he paid tribute to her, saying "I share this [award] with you. Thank you for letting me insert myself into your world of Mildred."
To gales of laughter from the audience he went on to thank his wife -- also named Kate -- "who had to listen to me talk about that every day."
Backstage, Winslet told reporters she "was thrilled," not offended, by Pearce's speech.
Guy Pearce Dishes on Nude Scenes With Kate Winslet
by PopEater Staff, posted Apr 8th 2011 6:45AM
'Memento' star Guy Pearce is currently heating up TV screens as playboy Monty Beragon, in HBO's 'Mildred Pierce,' opposite Kate Winslet. After appearing in Australian TV drama 'Neighbours' in the 1980s, Guy got his big break as a flamboyant drag queen in 'The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' and has been working steadily since in movies like 'L.A. Confidential' and 'The King's Speech.' Pearce (who, let the record show, is completely unpretentious and charming) spoke to PopEater about those racy love scenes with Kate Winslet and the enduring popularity of Priscilla.
I'm loving 'Mildred Pierce.'
As soon as I knew it was Kate and Todd [Haynes, director], I mean how can you say no? They offered it to me and there was another film that I was potentially going to be doing that would have clashed with 'Mildred Pierce,' so at first I wasn't sure if I could do it. I then found out that I didn't get the other film that was in the works so it worked out well. That other film didn't end up being very good and I got to do 'Mildred Pierce,' so I was very pleased.
Kate Winslet Discusses Her Potty Mouth and 'Mildred Pierce' Gag Reel on 'The View' (VIDEO)
by Nick Zaino, posted Mar 25th 2011 5:00PM
'Mildred Pierce' star Kate Winslet is good friends with Melissa Leo of 'The Fighter.' The two apparently share a proclivity for profanity, which she discussed today on 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC). Leo dropped an F-bomb at the Oscars, which is how Sherri Shepherd broached the subject, asking if Winslet also had a bit of a potty mouth.Winslet readily copped to the charge, saying that the crew on 'Pierce' made her a gag reel with her own behind-the-scenes footage. She thought it would be a fun idea to watch it with the kids, and explained to them they would see all the silly bits and mistakes. Apparently, she didn't screen it first. "Put it on," she said. "Three seconds later, off! Um, yes. We'll watch that when you're 18. Hearing mummy say things that they've never heard mummy say before."
Should make the DVD extras interesting.
Evan Rachel Wood Says Kate Winslet Helped Her With 'Mildred Pierce' Nude Scenes
by PopEater Staff, posted Mar 23rd 2011 8:15AM
Kate Winslet is an old hand at filming nude scenes, so when her 'Mildred Pierce' co-star Evan Rachel Wood was facing her first one, she knew just whom she could turn to for advice.Wood plays the daughter of Winslet's character in the upcoming HBO mini-series 'Mildred Pierce,' and the risqué role called for the young actress's first nude scene. But lucky for Wood, her co-star has stripped down on film several times before and was there to lend support.
"She coached me through my first nude scene," Wood told E! News at Monday evening's premiere. "I mean, she's done it all. She was literally next to the camera going [thumbs-up]."

The Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan podcast took a week off last week, but Ryan McGee and I are back with a new edition of our small-screen gabfest. There are three topics in this week's podcast: HBO's 'Mildred Pierce,' which stars Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood and debuts Sunday; Netflix's entry into the scripted-content arena with 'House of Cards'; and a couple of recent 'Chuck' and 'Supernatural' panels that were moderated by some mutant redheaded TV critic.
Running times for each part of the discussion are below.
Melissa Leo Blames Kate Winslet for Oscars F-Bomb (VIDEO)

Melissa Leo, the actress who dropped a F-bomb during her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, explained the cause of her live gaffe on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' (weekdays, syndicated). At the start of the interview, Ellen DeGeneres surprises Leo with a swear jar and a tiny pair of earphones to shield her Oscar from any possible profanity. Then, Leo explains that curse words are simply part of her regular vocabulary. "It's part of my vernacular, part of my upbringing," she said.
Sneak Peek: New 'Mildred Pierce' Trailer Brings The Drama (VIDEO)
by Chris Jordan, posted Sep 14th 2010 2:30PM
Goodbye film noir, hello stage drama. The just-released trailer for the upcoming HBO five-part miniseries 'Mildred Pierce' is set in a Depression-era California that reeks of desperation but has touches of glamour when the pampered Veda takes to the opera stage.
In this version, Kate Winslet is the suffering single mom and Evan Rachel Wood plays Veda, her bratty, diva daughter. The miniseries directed by Todd Haynes of 'Far From Heaven' fame.
"She has something in her that that I thought I had,'' says Winslet's Pierce, in the midst of numerous slow-to-fade edits. "Haven't I've given you everything!'' Pierce later exclaims.
If we know Veda, the answer is no.

Mare Winningham, fresh off playing alongside fellow "brat packer" Kiefer Sutherland this season on '24,' has landed a plum role in HBO's upcoming adaptation of 'Mildred Pierce.'The five-part miniseries, based on James M. Cain's classic novel, stars Kate Winslet as the titular character, a depression-era woman caught in a dead-end marriage who sets out to make something of herself. Guy Pearce and indie darling Evan Rachel Wood co-star as Winslet's lover and daughter, respectively.
Kristen Stewart Intimidated by Kate Winslet at the Academy Awards (VIDEO)
by Donald Deane, posted Mar 16th 2010 12:30PM
According to 'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart, she felt quite awkward as a presenter at the 2010 Academy Awards. And, when she met Kate Winslet for the first time, she was star-struck and barely able to hold a conversation, she said on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated).Stewart said she felt "very much like a little kid on stage" while presenting and, when she met Winslet, they bonded over sharing the same hair and makeup team, but Stewart's case of nerves prevented her from saying much else.

'Mildred Pierce' Mini-Series a Go With Kate Winslet
by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 12th 2010 2:00PM
Does it take an Oscar winner to play a character that's already won an Oscar for another actress? No, but it can't hurt. After over half a year of speculation and rumor, Michael Ausiello in Entertainment Weekly has reported HBO's confirmation that Kate Winslet will star in 'Mildred Pierce,' the remake of the 1945 Joan Crawford movie of the same name. There's a lot to be excited about with this news. For starters, instead of just a two-hour TV movie, HBO is giving the adaptation of James M. Cain's novel time. It'll be a five-hour miniseries which virtually ensures more time to delve into the original story. Then there's Winslet essaying the role. She's such a good actress that it's a certainty she won't do what Joan did with the role. We'll be seeing another Mildred, Winslet's own interpretation of the role.

Kate Winslet takes on the ghost of Joan Crawford, Mildred Pierce
by Allison Waldman, posted Aug 14th 2009 12:29PM

Well, nobody can accuse Kate Winslet of not being courageous. The actress -- also an Oscar-winner for The Reader -- is going to do a remake. Right now Mildred Pierce is slated as a miniseries starring Kate Winslet with Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven) writing and directing. HBO is first in line to broadcast the mini, but the contracts haven't been signed yet.
Remakes always make me a little queasy. After all, for every success like The Fugitive, there's a debacle like The Wild Wild West. But this time around it's not a television series being remade, it's a famous and semi-classic Oscar-winner, Mildred Pierce. The name alone evokes images of Joan Crawford with shoulder pads you could die for and a horrible teenage daughter played by Ann Blyth.
DVD Review: Extras: The Complete First Season
by Joel Keller, posted Jan 7th 2007 11:31AM
As I may have mentioned here once or twice, I was a huge fan of the British version of The Office. No matter what the US version accomplishes or how good it gets, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the vision Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant had of the average dead-boring workplace and the relationships that are developed there. So when I was sent a preview copy of the first season of the pair's follow-up effort, Extras (out Tuesday), I was intrigued but wary: after such a successful debut, the sophomore effort more often than not disappoints. Also, all the reviews of the show I had read during its BBC and HBO runs (I have neither channel) were of the mixed-to-positive variety. So... is it worth buying, renting, or neither? I'll let you know after the jump.
