Netflix Builds a 'House of Cards' That Could Knock Down the Networks

Netflix made it official today: The company has ordered its first original television series.Netflix has commissioned 26 episodes of a television series called 'House of Cards,' which will star Kevin Spacey and be executive produced by director David Fincher. According to a Friday press release, you'll be able to put 'House of Cards' in your Netflix queue in late 2012.
Netflix going from content-delivery system to a content-creation company raises a lot of questions in my mind, but the primary one is this: Won't this lead to a lot of studios taking their shows and movies off Netflix at some point?

Not content to remain a middle man in the "getting quality television programming directly to consumers" game, Netflix is teaming up with Oscar-snubbed director David Fincher and Kevin Spacey to air the duo's original series 'House of Cards.'Deadline reports that Neflix outbid premium cable networks for the drama by offering a two-season, 26-episode commitment. The company had previously said it wasn't interested in getting into original programming, but with competitors like Amazon nipping at their heels, it seems like a smart move.

As if '17th Precinct' didn't sound wonderful enough already, today comes news that yet another 'Battlestar Galactica' veteran has booked a role in the NBC pilot.James Callis, otherwise known as 'BSG' scientist Gaius Baltar, will work alongside former costar Jamie Bamber in the series, Deadline reports.
The series, headed by 'BSG' mastermind Ron Moore, follows cops in a world where magic is real -- think 'Harry Potter' meets 'Law & Order.' Also on board, according to Deadline: former 'The Deep End' star Matt Long.
Several other stars booked pilots, including 'Greek' star Amber Stevens, who will play a psychiatry intern on 'Weekends at Bellevue,' 'Without a Trace' star Enrique Murciano, who will play a detective alongside Minnie Driver in 'Hail Mary,' and 'Lost' alum Rebecca Mader, who will play a "bitchy" drug rep in 'Work It.'

• Gwyneth Paltrow is currently filming her third episode of 'Glee.' In next week's episode, the actress gives sex counseling to Emma and her new hubby, played by John Stamos. [Entertainment Weekly]
• Kevin Spacey, TV star? It could happen. The actor is reportedly attached to star in a new series being directed by 'The Fighter' director David O. Russell. 'House of Cards' is based on the book and British miniseries of the same name and follows a British politician angling for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's job. [Deadline]
• '30 Rock' had presidential aspirations for its 100th episode, which films next week. The production team reportedly wanted Bill Clinton to cameo, but were turned down by the former president. [New York Post]

Stephen Colbert loves the film 'American Beauty.' However, he wants some explanation. Who better to ask than Kevin Spacey, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the movie's suburban patriarch Lester Burnham?"I'm a 46-year-old guy. According to your performance in that movie, I'm supposed to drop out, start smoking dope and work in a Burger King window, and that's beautiful," said the host on 'The Colbert Report' (weeknights, 11:30PM ET on COM). "We all should just be staring at plastic bags," he added (as do two teenagers in the film).
"Isn't that your day job?" Spacey replied with a smirk. The host countered, "You realize the entire time you're talking to me, I'm just picturing you naked with rose petals all over your body," referring to Lester's fantasies about a high school cheerleader.

Though Kevin Spacey was the 'Late Night' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC) guest, Jimmy Fallon seemed more interested in watching the actor be other people -- namely Johnny Carson, and a bit of Jack Lemmon. Well, he is very good at it...Spacey obliged, swapping seats with the host. "Jimmy, how the hell are ya?" he asked Fallon in pitch-perfect Carson tones. "Do you enjoy doing the show every night, is it fun?" Fallon answered, "We have a lot of fun guests, talented guests, like the great actor Kevin Spacey."
"Monologues can be tough, though, can't they?" said Spacey/Carson. "I just like sitting here watching you suffer."

In 'Casino Jack,' Kevin Spacey plays Jack Abramoff, the former lobbyist/businessman who defrauded Native American tribes affiliated with casinos. Meeting the real Abramoff influenced the actor in an unexpected way, Spacey said on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC). The 52-year-old was "suprisingly charming, very funny and does impressions," which explains why Spacey included several in the film. He then demonstrated his impressionist skills with a spot-on Morgan Freeman imitation: "Morgan Freeman," he began in low, soothing tones, "sounds almost god-like. He can be talking about almost anything. And if he takes just the... right amount of... pauses, it can sound a little like poetry."
Kevin Spacey Developing a Series for HBO

HBO is joining the cult of Kevin Spacey. The pay cable net has inked a deal with the Oscar winner to develop his new series 'The Crux,' about a charismatic cult leader and his followers. According to Vulture, Spacey is looking to pull double duty by producing and starring in the series, but his big screen career might keep him behind the camera with another actor possibly taking on the show's lead role.
Co-producer Rod Lurie is clearly hoping that Spacey finds the time to star in the show, telling Variety, "It really is a perfect marriage between an actor and a role."

Hey, isn't Kevin Spacey supposed to impersonate Johnny Carson only on David Letterman's show? Sure, the Tonight Show is a natural place for Spacey to do it, but I think he's more known for doing it on Dave's show. But he did it last night (and used the desk as a prop). He also got in a rather raunchy joke about Paula Abdul. (Video also here.)
HBO's Recount: A review

After the first 15 minutes of the HBO movie Recount, I was so upset, so filled with rage that I wondered if I wanted to watch the rest of the movie. Did I want to relive the events of November 7, 2000? Did I want to watch what happened, the craziest election fiasco in the last 25 years? I was compelled to stick with it because I had lived through it and I was dying to know what I didn't know when it unfolded in real time. I thought the HBO movie might teach me something, and, in fact, it did. For those who don't want to know what happened in Recount, I won't reveal any spoilers until after the jump. Of course, if you don't already know how the election turned out, you've either been in a coma or are woefully out of touch. Suffice to say that Recount doesn't rewrite history. The ending is exactly as it was in 2000.

At 8, ABC has Remember The Titans.- CBS has repeats of CSI: Miami and Without A Trace, then a new 48 Hours Mystery.
- NBC has the disaster flick 10.5 (to warm you up for the sequel coming up, I guess) at 8.
- Over on FOX, two new episodes of Cops, followed by a new America's Most Wanted.
- Cartoon Network has a new Zatch Bell at 8, followed by a new Naruto.
- Also at 8: HBO has Batman Begins, the best one so far.
- At 10, IFC has a new ep of The Henry Rollins Show.
- There's a new Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo on Cartoon Network at 10.

It seems that the
big guns are being pulled out for the last few weeks of Saturday Night Live. First, it was announced that Tom
Hanks, who will probably be promoting his movie The DaVinci Code, would be hosting the May 6th episode
along with musical guest Red Hot Chili Peppers. Now we learn from the fan site drivingmrspacey that actor Kevin Spacey will be hosting the
May 20th season finale.
Spacey, who will be starring as Lex Luthor in this summer's Superman Returns, hasn't hosted SNL since 1997 (at least according his IMdb entry). This will place him far down the leader board in a tie with, er, Lindsay Lohan.
If you have been reading Jonathan Toomey's SNL reviews this year (and I know you all have), you know that this season has been a bit of a hit-and-miss, with the highlights being the pre-recorded sketches and the TV Funhouse cartoons. Let's see if the combined power of Hanks and Spacey will get the writers pumped to produce some great comedy.
