'SNL' Scorecard: Was Melissa McCarthy Even Given a Chance?

by Mike Ryan, posted Oct 2nd 2011 1:55PM

Someday Melissa McCarthy will be a good 'SNL' host. Her name will be mentioned alongside recent 'SNL' hosting phenoms like Jon Hamm and Justin Timberlake. Hell, if given some better than average material last night to back up her deliveries, we may already be mentioning her name as part of this class. Unfortunately, McCarthy did what she could with a writing staff that seemed to take the week off from writing anything interesting and, instead, just gave her a few sketches that resembled poor man's clones of 'Bridesmaids.' To be fair, this was probably to be expected with her first outing immediately following her breakthrough comedy role. But, now that this is out of the way, hopefully, next time, the writing staff will giver her more things to do than pour food on her head and have her fall down a flight of stairs. Alas, on to the scorecard...

Who Scored Big in Week 1 of SNL's Relevancy Poll?

by Mike Ryan, posted Sep 26th 2011 1:20PM
Kristen WiigThe first week of 'Saturday Night Live' is in the books, which means it's once again time to go to the Relevancy Poll to see who's getting the most out of their airtime. (The final results of last year's poll are over here.) Host Alec Baldwin dominated the smaller sketches, and with a plethora of ensemble sketches (three in all), at least so far, it's hard to get a true gage on how things will play out in the cast. Though we did get a sense that Kristen Wiig seems to be back in full force -- after what could be considered a year off to finish and promote 'Bridesmaids'-- and that Jay Pharoah is still in the doghouse. Off to the poll:

'SNL' Scorecard: Did Steve Martin Succeed in Sabotaging Alec Baldwin's Show?

by Mike Ryan, posted Sep 25th 2011 12:30PM

Watching Alec Baldwin host 'SNL' – which he has now done a record 16 times -- has become a little like purchasing a recent album from the now disbanded R.E.M.: We know that we're going to get a solid effort – even great, at times -- but the truly memorable moments are from the first decade of work. A point Baldwin even kind of alludes to in last night's monologue. The first show of the season is usually a mixed bag at best (with last year's excellent Amy Poehler hosted effort a huge exception). "But they've had all summer to think of new ideas," is often a criticism levied at the first show of a season, but that's not really the way it works. With Baldwin as host and with the exact same cast as last year (with the only change being Nasim Pedrad promoted from featured player to cast member) there was hope that SNL's 37th season could come out firing on all cylinders. Nope. So, with that, welcome to another season of 'Saturday Night Live' and, yes, another season of SNL Scorecard!

Heather Morris'Glee' scene-stealer Heather Morris loves her job, but she loves her boyfriend more.

In an interview with Fitness Magazine, on stands Sept. 20, Morris said she'd quit acting if it started to interfere with her relationship.

"I want to marry him so bad," Morris told Fitness Magazine, referring to her boyfriend Taylor Hubbell. "That's what I really care about. I want to marry Taylor and have kids with him. I love acting, but if it affects my relationship, then I won't continue doing it."

Morris plays Brittany, the daffy blonde cheerleader with killer dance moves, on 'Glee.' She's become the breakout star of the series, and thanks to her dancing background -- she appeared with Beyonce on tour -- she has a lot of famous fans.

Kristen Wiig Shows Fear During Encounter With Elisabeth HasselbeckBackstage at 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated), Elisabeth Hasselbeck complimented Kristen Wiig's portrayal of her on 'Saturday Night Live.' But, perhaps afraid of incurring Hasselbeck's wrath, Wiig denied that it was ever her.

"I love how you play me on 'SNL,'" said Hasselbeck. "You're great."

Jon Stewart Thinks Kristen Wiig Invented Her 'Bridesmaids' Writing Partner (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 13th 2011 4:47AM
Kristen Wiig, 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart'Kristen Wiig is understandably excited about the premiere of her first foray into screenwriting on the big screen Friday, May 13, 2011. So she must have been pleased when Jon Stewart told her that 'Bridesmaids' was rating very well on Rotten Tomatoes on 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central).

Of course, acclaim and box office receipts don't always synch up, so she'll have to sweat it through the weekend, but at least Stewart helped her find a few laughs to break the tension for a bit. He was particularly delighted when she talked about writing the film with her partner Annie Mumolo.

"Now you've made that name up," he said, but she insisted Mumolo was real. Of course, Wiig also said Mumolo lived in a castle and could fly, but she is real.

'Saturday Night Live' Cast Members Fondle Helen Mirren's Breasts (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Apr 11th 2011 5:05AM
Helen Mirren on 'Saturday Night Live''Saturday Night Live' (Sat., 11:30PM ET on NBC) opened our eyes to the magical, serene world of Helen Mirren's breasts. The Oscar-winning Dame was an incredibly good sport.

Nasim Pedrad asked, "Can I touch 'em?" Mirren replied, "Yes, of course." Over soaring music, Pedrad had visions of the sun rising, bunnies in tranquil fields, the moon landing, O.J. and the glove, 'Rudy', and Kerri Strug's one-legged vault.

Then she was surrounded by fluffy clouds and a robed, blond Adam Samberg. He informed her: "You're in a place that's much better than heaven. You're in Helen Mirren's titties."

Back in the 'SNL' studio, Kristen Wiig stormed into the room. "I'm having such a bad day," she said before burying her head in Mirren's cleavage. Ah, much better.

Doing Improv Led to an Awkward Moment for Kristen Wiig With Her Father in the Audience (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 17th 2011 3:57AM
Kristen Wiig, 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'It must be exciting as a parent to get to see your child do what it is that they love for the first time. Well, most of the time anyway. Kristen Wiig's dad may have gotten a little more than he expected, according to the comedienne on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (Weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC).

"I was doing an improv and it was like a superhero improv where the audience gives you who you are," she explained. "Like what your powers are. And I was **** Girl."

For those of us who couldn't make the live taping, Wiig anticipated a bleep of the key word there, so she rephrased it. "If I just got bleeped, it was Vibrator Girl."

Robert De Niro Dresses in Drag, Flirts With Diddy on 'SNL' (VIDEO)

Robert De Niro Dresses in Drag, Flirts With Diddy on 'SNL'Well, Diddy got his wish, but was it worth it for Robert De Niro? Sean "Diddy" Combs was the musical guest on this week's 'Saturday Night Live' (Sat., 11:30PM ET on NBC). He appeared along with third-time host Bobby (we call him "Bobby") De Niro. And the rapper started a Twitter campaign to be included in a sketch with the actor.

So, that happened -- but it may not have been the highlight of De Niro's career. The musician and the actor appeared together in a sketch featuring Andy Samberg as "Blizzard Man" -- the world's most clueless (and untalented) rapper. De Niro dressed up in drag to play Blizzard Man's mom, and soon enough, Diddy was hitting on him ... well, her.

While De Niro was decked out in a form-fitting sweater, sunglasses, and a questionable hairstyle, Diddy attempted to seduce him (her). Mr. Combs laid down such lines such as "Girl, you the one that's hot fire," and "If you wasn't my man's mom, I'd tear that a## up" -- and okay, let's just shut this whole thing down right now.

'Women of SNL' Special Spoofs 'Real Housewives' Reunions (VIDEO)

'Women of SNL' Spoofs 'Real Housewives' ReunionsWith a trove of fabulously funny comediennes reuniting for 'The Women of SNL' special (Mon., 9PM ET on NBC), what better opportunity to spoof all those 'Real Housewives' reunions? Adding routine host Andy Cohen was a nice touch to their pitch-perfect rendition.

The proceedings quickly got contentious when Kristen Wiig said Maya Rudolph "is not classy, because she is not." She explained, "I was leaving the 'SNL' after-party ... and she was hiding in the shadows and she reached out and she pulled. my. weave!" As proof, she held the remains aloft.

When Cheri Oteri called Maya "gawbage," Maya (stiffly) strutted offstage. Rachel Dratch comforted Kristen, shouting, "Kristen, look at me! We are family!"

Tina Fey broke the tension with the announcement of her "dance single ... dropping in December 2014." Her faux-spontaneous performance featured bad lip-syncing to an Auto-Tuned song.

'Bored to Death': Ray Accidentally Punches Kevin Bacon in the Nose (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 25th 2010 5:09AM
'Bored to Death' -- Ray Accidentally Punches Kevin Bacon in the NoseIn a sense, all the characters on 'Bored to Death' (Sun., 10PM ET on HBO) are leading a double-life. For instance, even mopey author Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) enjoys a second career as a secret private eye. But even on this show, Ray Hueston (Zack Galifianakis) is a special case. Ray is an artist who draws his own comic book -- starring himself as a character called "Super Ray."

Now, at last, there is major excitement about Ray's art -- when actor Kevin Bacon arrives and displays an interest in portraying "Super Ray" in a film version of the comic. Everything could finally be working out for real-life Ray -- if he can avoid messing things up.

Then, Ray's sometime lover Jennifer (Kristen Wiig) shows up, and begins berating Ray while standing in the middle of a bar. Ray takes the abuse -- until he can't take it for a single second longer. A bartender wants to toss Ray out, and in anger, the artist pulls his arm back ... and accidentally punches Kevin Bacon in the nose. Not good.

Emmy Picks: Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy

by Joel Keller, posted Jul 22nd 2010 5:04PM
Julie Bowen, Jane Krakowski, Jane Lynch, Holland Taylor, Sofia Vergara, Kristen Wiig - Emmy nominees for best suppoting comedy actress
Over the next few days, I'll be listing the Emmy nominees in the major categories and giving you picks and possible dark horses. Feel free to agree, disagree, and make your own picks in the comments.

Yesterday, I made my pick in the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama category. Today, I look at what seems to be the biggest lock of the night: the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy category.

Julie Bowen, 'Modern Family'
Jane Krakowski, '30 Rock'
Jane Lynch, 'Glee'
Holland Taylor, 'Two and a Half Men'
Sofia Vergara, 'Modern Family'
Kristen Wiig, 'Saturday Night Live'

Who will win: Jane Lynch. No doubt about it. 'Glee' was the most popular new show of the season, and she was the most popular member of that show's humongous cast. Lynch deserved all the press she got; even though her character of Sue Sylvester drifted into cartoonish territory at times, she was compelling to watch, and her presence was missed in the few episodes where she was rarely or not used. Also, Lynch is a veteran character actor finally getting her chance to shine. The Academy loves those kinds of stories.
