According to Variety, MTV has renewed 'The Hills' for a sixth season, despite a noticeable dip in the ratings. Also getting a pickup is its east coast spin-off 'The City,' which will return for its second.
This would be only the second season for the show's new lead, HBIC Kristin Cavallari, who joined the cast following the departure of the show's original star, Lauren Conrad. Before her stint on the 'Hills,' she had been better known as Lauren's nemesis on 'Laguna Beach.'
That's how MTV's been promoting the new season of 'The Hills,' which premieres tonight. "The bitch" refers to Kristin Cavallari, formerly of 'Laguna Beach,' who is replacing Lauren Conrad as the reality series' lead character.
'Laguna' fans will remember Kristin as the vixenish foil who "stole" good girl Lauren's boyfriend, Stephen Colletti. But Cavallari begs to differ, saying she cried about her portrayal when that show premiered ...

It's a good thing Spencer Pratt claims he's turning over a new leaf, because last night's episode of 'The Hills' hinted there's a new villain in town, and she's actually a baddie blast from the past: Kristin Cavallari.
As Lauren Conrad made her final appearance as a regular cast member when she made a surprise (OK, not really) pop-in to Spencer and Heidi's wedding, Kristin, L.C.'s old nemesis from 'Laguna Beach,' made a surprise pop-in herself, turning up at the wedding and plopping herself down next to Justin Bobby.
With LC departing the show after this season, Cavallari will step in to take center stage. Look for her first appearance in this season's May 31 finale. She'll be the one catching Heidi's wedding bouquet.
In other news, Courteney Cox's 'Cougar Town' and other pilots are likely to get some good news, and the CW's 'Reaper' may not be dead after all.

Among the A-listers you'll see this season: a daytime TV queen (Elisabeth Hasselbeck), a 'Star Trek' icon (Leonard Nimoy) and a two-time Oscar winner (Jodie Foster) who will finally let Maggie Simpson do the talking.

Love 'em or loathe 'em, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt -- or Speidi, as they're called -- are a major reason people still tune in to 'The Hills.' The couple's rollercoaster relationship and ongoing feud with co-star Lauren Conrad have been ratings gold for MTV.
Now in its fifth season, 'The Hills' has become a reality franchise that's given us such spin-offs as 'Bromance' and 'The City.' Meanwhile, Heidi and Spencer have become almost daily gossip fodder: As you read this, the tabloids are abuzz that the two are planning to wed on April 25 (for the second time), even though they're verging on a break-up on the show. And that's not all -- rumors are swirling that they'll take over 'The Hills' when Lauren leaves at the end of this season.
Heidi and Spencer called AOL TV to dish about the show, the state of their relationship ... and all those rumors. -- By Katy Kroll
Charlize Theron told MTV News she didn't understand why the show is so popular. "Why is it so big? It's about nothing!" she wondered. "The Hills is about nothing. I think the girls are beautiful and when they cry their mascara runs and that's real, but I don't get it!"
And she's not the only celebrity who's befuddled by The Hills phenomenon, either. Singer Juliana Hatfield blogged, "I hate the fact that I know Heidi Montag's name; that I know who she is; that she takes up any space at all in my consciousness."
Like most red-blooded Americans, I love lists. We do a lot of them here at TV Squad and you'll see them at many sites every single day of the week. But I think that sometimes the lists go too far. I mean, what's the point of listing the top 50 or top 100 of something? Isn't that a little bit too many spots? Instead of getting down to the nitty-gritty (say, a top 10 or top 25), you ended up not only listing the best, worst, most, least (or whatever the list's topic is), you're just listing all of them.
Case in point, this Forbes list of the 100 most powerful celebrities.
The Hills co-star Brody Jenner is getting his own spin-off called Bromance. The show, brainchild of Ryan Seacrest's company (thanks Seacrest), is a competition where regular guys come to Hollywood for a chance to be in...get this...Brody's entourage. MTV Senior VP of Series Development Liz Gateley says, "Brody is the perfect fit for this concept; he is the type of guy everyone wants to hang out with."
But wait, there's more. In each episode's elimination ceremony, the guys will gather in a hot tub for the news. Furthermore, similar to Rock of Love and Flavor of Love, the guys will participate in various competitions (i.e. skydiving and dealing with the paparazzi), go on group dates, and be rewarded with alone time with Brody.
Whitney Port is getting her own show. I bet you the nipple slip awhile ago sealed the deal. According to Us Weekly, The Hills star will be working bicoastally for a fashion PR firm called People's Revolution. Now, she'll be involved in hijinx on both coasts. Apparently, in New York, Whitney will befriend socialite Olivia Palermo.
Heidi and Spencer have made three million in two years of off "their work as douchebags" according to VH1. And no, the three million is not their combined salaries from The Hills. The couple just shamelessly sells out: club appearances, clothing lines, photo ops. I love that VH1 used the phrase "their work as douchebags." It's so true.
And here's the sneak peek of season 4 of The Hills coming this August. Lauren will find a new guy. Audrina and Lo will fight over LC's affections. And Stephanie will make the awful decision to invite LC and Heidi and Spencer to her birthday party.
Speaking of bummed out, it was freezing in Beverly Hills last night. MTV rented the outside of this swanky mansion but here's the catch, nothing was going on inside. So, the press had to freeze for three hours while we waited to talk to the stars of The Hills. Also, the port-o-potties MTV set up for us were super classy. Come on! There had to be at least fifteen bathrooms in that house.
For what happened at the live red carpet event before the big season finale, read on past the jump. I got to talk to Chiara Kramer, "Lo" Bosworth, and Stephanie Pratt.
