Breaking: 'Law & Order: SVU' Books Two New Detectives

by Maggie Furlong, posted Jun 27th 2011 6:00PM
Kelli Giddish & Danny Pino'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' has already lost Christopher Meloni, and his fellow lead Mariska Hargitay's departure won't be far behind. But we've just learned that NBC has cast two new stars to take the lead.

The new recruits? Kelli Giddish, who starred as U.S. Marshal Annie Frost on last season's short-lived NBC drama 'Chase,' and Danny Pino, who was senior detective Scotty Valens on 'Cold Case' for seven seasons.

We're not yet sure when the two will first appear on the show, or whether or not they'll be acting as lead detectives or trainees, but expect more details soon.

For now, a few thoughts on the news from the head of NBC and 'L&O' bossman Dick Wolf ...

Who Should Replace Christopher Meloni on 'Law & Order: SVU'?

by Maggie Furlong, posted Jun 22nd 2011 8:00AM
Chris Meloni, 'Law & Order: SVU'Christopher Meloni will leave a Stabler-shaped hole in the hearts of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' fans this fall.

We don't yet know how he'll say goodbye to 'SVU' after 12 seasons on the job, but it's never too early to start preparing ourselves for someone else taking over the sex crimes beat.

While rumors have been swirling about who will replace Mariska Hargitay -- she's only coming back for 13 episodes next season as Olivia Benson before departing herself -- not much has popped up in the way of recasting the role Meloni made famous.

Assuming they'll keep a man on the job to maintain that same partner dynamic, we've come up with a few great options (casting agents, take note!) to spar with Hargitay and her eventual successor, including two 'L&O' franchise alums and two stars from opposing sides on 'The Wire.'

Christopher Meloni's 'SVU' Replacement: Who's on the Short List?

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jun 21st 2011 6:35AM
Mariska Hargitay and Christopher MeloniIt's only been a month since Christopher Meloni stepped down from 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,' but producers are reportedly screen-testing his possible replacements in New York today.

Production on the upcoming Season 13 is due to get underway soon and, according to Deadline.com, 'SVU' creator/executive producer Dick Wolf and NBC have narrowed the field to a short list of five.

The actors, who have all doubtless just spent a sleepless night in the Big Apple rehearsing their lines, have been named as: Danny Pino ('Cold Case'), Kevin Alejandro ('True Blood,' 'Southland'), David Conrad ('Ghost Whisperer'), Michael Raymond-James ('Terriers') and Rhys Coiro ('Entourage').

Each one will test today with Meloni's co-star, Mariska Hargitay, who plays Det. Olivia Benson on the drama. Both Alejandro and Raymond-James recently guest-starred on 'SVU,' so could be feeling like they've got the edge.

The actress also known as Olivia Benson told TV Line, "For the past 12 years Chris has been my partner and friend, both on screen and off. He inspired me every day with his integrity, his extraordinary talent and his commitment to the truth. I love him deeply and will miss him terribly -- I'm so excited to see what he'll do next."

Christopher Meloni Not Returning to 'Law & Order: SVU'

by Maggie Furlong, posted May 24th 2011 9:00PM
Christopher Meloni, Law & Order: SVUThe 'Law & Order' franchise drama continues -- with or without the shows' stars.

For weeks, rumors have been swirling that Jennifer Love Hewitt might be replacing Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson on 'Special Victims Unit.' Fans breathed a sigh of relief when Hargitay signed on for one more season, but now it looks like it's time to start searching for Elliott Stabler's replacement.

According to TVLine.com, Christopher Meloni will not be returning for the show's 13th season this fall.

'SVU' has been on the air at NBC for over a decade, since 1999, with Meloni and Hargitay as the leads, but while contract negotiations worked out for Hargitay, it wasn't so simple for Meloni. According to TVLine's unnamed source, "Protracted talks between the actor ... and studio NBC Universal broke down on Tuesday."

Rosie Perez Sues 'Law & Order: SVU' Over Injuries

by PopEater Staff, posted May 19th 2011 12:00PM
Rosie PerezRosie Perez is taking legal action against 'Law & Order: SVU' after being injured during her 2009 guest stint.

According to the N.Y. Daily News, Perez was filming a guest role on the hit New York City–based crime drama in September 2009 when a scene called for an extra to forcibly shake her. The violent action caused Perez to suffer a herniated disc which took two surgeries to correct.

"The thing to do was taking someone who knows what he's doing to make it look violent without being violent," said Perez's lawyer Brian O'Dwyer, who filed a lawsuit Wednesday in the Brooklyn Supreme Court. "This person was not a stuntman, he was just an extra."

Perez continued to work on the episode, titled 'Hardwired,' which O'Dwyer said likely caused her injuries to worsen.

A Murder Victim's Daughter Starts Shooting Inside the Precinct on 'SVU' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 19th 2011 4:09AM
'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'Somebody was asleep at the front desk of the police station this week on 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' (Wed., 10PM ET on NBC). Otherwise, how would the daughter of their murder victim have made it all the way up to the holding cells and the desks of the offices with a loaded gun?

Under the pretense of wanting to see the man who had killed her mother, Jenna was allowed up to see the detectives, and in so doing got to see him. Something seemed a little bit off, but even Det. Benson couldn't have anticipated that this sweet-looking teenage girl would erupt into anguished violence.

Then, to seal her own fate, when Det. Stabler had her so close to putting her own gun down, her mother's killer -- already shot -- had to egg her on. "You b****," he said. "I should have killed you with your mother."

by Jean Bentley, posted May 14th 2011 3:00PM
Jennifer Love HewittMariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have made it no secret that they're interested in cutting back on their hours manning the Special Victims Unit on 'Law & Order: SVU.' But news broke today that an unlikely actress is eying a role as Hargitay's replacement: Jennifer Love Hewitt.

The former 'Ghost Whisperer' star is reportedly in talks to take over as the partner of Meloni's Elliot Stabler around mid-season when Hargitay's Olivia Benson will be promoted to a supervisor position, TV Line reports.

Hargitay has signed a deal to return for 'SVU''s 13th season, but will work fewer hours for the same salary. Meloni has not yet signed a deal, but he is reportedly asking for a raise and will likely not come to an official agreement until after NBC's Upfront presentation next week.

Rita Wilson Plays Mother to Young Serial Rapist on 'Law & Order: SVU' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 12th 2011 2:27AM
Rita Wilson, 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit'Sterling Beaumon captivated fans and earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of a young Benjamin Linus on 'Lost.' Now, he returned to television, and this time he was facing off against the detectives of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' (Wed., 10PM ET on NBC).

He also got to work opposite Mrs. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, who portrayed his mother. Unlike most episodes of 'SVU,' though, the child actor wasn't playing a victim or the child of the perpetrator.

Beaumon, as Hunter, is the twisted villain of the episode. In a scene where his mother tries to convince him to come in, Hunter sees through her ruse and comes across as so cold and calculating, it's uncomfortable to watch, but at the same time impressive how well Wilson captures the overwhelmed mother, stunned to hear her child talking like this.

While there are many women who would love to imagine having children with Stamos, they might not have liked as much what happened with Ken. The detectives even tried to embarrass him into breaking down by bringing in 20 of his children together from the New York area.

Nine TV Characters Who Should Have Their Own Prequels

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 15th 2011 11:20AM
Prequel SpecialsLet's face it: no matter how much screen time our favorite TV characters take up, we're always hungry for more.

Take Sam Axe on 'Burn Notice,' for example. He's played by a lovable, veteran actor, Bruce Campbell, and nails every scene. 'Burn Notice' fans are getting some extra Sam Axe this weekend when the character's backstory is explored in the prequel movie 'Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe' (Sunday, April 17, at 9PM on USA).

But not every beloved character is that lucky. In our dreams where we're network programming heads (what, you don't have those?), here are a few of the prequel/flashbacks we'd green-light in a heartbeat.
