Stephen Colbert Thanks LeBron James for Being So Classy and Modest (VIDEO)

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jun 14th 2011 8:35AM
Stephen Colbert vs. LeBron JamesNBA star Lebron James came in for some withering sarcasm on 'The Colbert Report' (Weeknights, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central).

Talking about how LeBron and "America's Sweetheart Team," the Miami Heat, had fallen to the Dallas Mavericks in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, Stephen Colbert mocked the grandiose way in which LeBron opened the season and the petulant way he ended it.

Casting his eye over what he referred to as "the humble beginnings" of the season, when the ending of LeBron's free agent saga was the subject of a live one-hour TV "event" on ESPN, Colbert showed footage of LeBron and his teammates Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade rising heroically onto a stage via forklift amid a ton of smoke and spotlights.

Then Colbert showed us LeBron in defeat, saying "of course, [he] handled it with class," before running a clip of LeBron speaking at the post-Finals press conference, in which he was distinctly less than gracious about his critics.

Marv Albert Compares LeBron James Leaving Cleveland to David Letterman Leaving NBC (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 21st 2010 4:16AM
Marv Albert, 'Late Show with David Letterman'When you get an opportunity to talk to a legendary sports broadcaster like Marv Albert, inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, of course you're going to want his take on the LeBron James television "spectacle" surrounding James's 'Decision' to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to play for the Miami Heat.

David Letterman, in fact, decided he wasn't going to let Albert leave the 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM on CBS) until he got his opinion on the poorly-received publicity stunt. Furthermore, he told Albert, "You're not leaving until you say I'm right about this."

Albert tried to make the comparison to when Letterman left NBC to shift to CBS after the first "Late Night War," but Letterman was having none of that. "They didn't want me there," he said. "I was not wanted at NBC." That's very different from James and Cleveland, where he'd become a beloved sports figure.

Nike's 'Rise' Ad: LeBron James Plays Tubbs to Don Johnson's Crockett

by Jane Murphy, posted Oct 28th 2010 1:35PM
"What should I do?" asks basketball superstar LeBron James, in a new Nike ad that reviews the last few months of his turbulent move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. The 90-second ad, 'Rise', came to light Monday via Twitter, when King James directed his followers to YouTube.

Arguably, the highlight of the ad, which had its TV premiere Tuesday during TNT's broadcast of the Heat vs. Celtics game, is the appearance of Miami's former king. Decked out in his baby blue v-neck and white linen suit, it's none other than Don Johnson.

Rapper Bow Wow Lost $100,000 on 'Madden' Video Game Bet (VIDEO)

Rapper Bow Wow Lost $100,000 ... From a Bet on a Video GameWhat's the most that you've ever lost on a bet? For your humble 'TV Squad' writer, that amount would be 20 bucks. But rapper Bow Wow managed to throw away $99,980 more than that -- from a bet on a single video game. That's the topic of discussion on the current 'Lopez Tonight' (weeknights, 11PM ET on TBS).

It seems that Bow Wow was playing 'Madden NFL' ... for some very high stakes. And when he lost to fellow rapper Game, he had to pay up one hundred thousand dollars.

Michelle Beadle Calls LeBron James a Nerd (VIDEO)

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 26th 2010 5:03PM
SportsNationPlenty of four-letter words have been thrown in LeBron James's direction since he left Cleveland to play basketball with his friends in Miami. Up until now, "nerd" had not typically been one of them. But that's what 'SportsNation' (weekdays at 4PM ET on ESPN) co-host Michelle Beadle called LeBron today while making fun of the pictures from his 25th birthday party in Las Vegas, which featured James wearing sunglasses while partying in a club, awkwardly posing with four fingers held up, and a cake decorated with a crown logo.

Co-host Colin Cowherd defends James, arguing that sports fans will all start loving him again when he starts winning. Um, that's only if you're a Miami Heat fan, and they're already loving the self-styled King. Everyone else? They'll keep ripping him, except of course when oohing and aahhing at his nightly on-court exploits on 'Sportscenter.'

Seth Meyers Teases LeBron, Reggie, Tiger at ESPY Awards (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Jul 15th 2010 5:33AM
Seth Meyers Teases Lebron, Reggie, Tiger on 'ESPY Awards'As host of the 'ESPY Awards' (Wed., 9PM ET on ESPN), Seth Meyers had a lot of material to work with, gleaning jokes both from the sports world and the athletes' private lives.

"This is where sports and entertainment come together," said Meyers. "It's like a Kardashian sister's bedroom." The camera cut to Reggie Bush, Kim Kardashian's on-again, off-again boyfriend, who smiled sheepishly.

Meyers called LeBron James' TV special announcing his move to the Miami Heat "a super boring hour of television" -- pretty brave considering ESPN televised said hour.

He commended James on the deal, but turned even that into a (Tiger Woods) joke you'll find in the clip.

Also on the video: footage from all the Best Play and Best Team nominees, and speeches from the respective awards' surprising winners.

TV 101: LeBron Shames Himself

by Jay Black, posted Jul 14th 2010 4:03PM
LeBron Jame and a headband.LeBron James went on TV last week and made everybody in America hate him.

The reason for all that hatred couldn't have been just what his decision actually was. I mean, the guy moved from Cleveland to Miami -- the only justification you need for that is to remind people that you moved from Cleveland to Miami. The only two people who think that's a bad move are Ian Hunter and Dan Gilbert and it's not clear that either of them are sane.

No, LeBron's downfall had nothing to do with sports. What hurt LeBron was that he made the one mistake that is unforgivable in America: he screwed up on TV.

Jon Stewart Mocks LeBron James' 'Decision' on 'Daily Show' (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart Mocks LeBron James' 'Decision' on 'Daily Show'Essentially every media outlet and sports/culture pundit across the nation covered LeBron James' 'Decision.' But true to the spirit of 'The Daily Show' (weeknights, 11PM ET on COM), Jon Stewart's contribution to the proceedings was one of mockery.

He noted that James "did a one-hour special on ESPN, and he said he was going to announce his decision in the first 10 minutes of the show. Who opens Al Capone's vault in the first 10 minutes of the show?"

And like all of James' fans (and haters), Stewart predicted which team he'd choose ... Team Jacob. "What?! The werewolf? She loves Edward," he said.

LeBron James Picks the Miami Heat: Announcement and Reactions (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 9th 2010 12:25AM
LeBron James Picks the Miami Heat: Announcement and ReactionsWho is the greatest basketball player of all time? Is it Michael Jordan? Kobe Bryant? ... Or is it LeBron James? For the past year, basketball fans have been engaged in wondering where LeBron James would end up. He's clearly one of the finest players of his generation, and he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers -- a famously terrible basketball team. LeBron is actually from the great state of Ohio, and he started out by playing for his "home" team from Cleveland. But now, his contract is up. And so the greatest current basketball player can move to a different city, if he feels like it.

Speculation about LeBron's move was unending. First off, before we even got to LeBron's actual decision, there was constant guessing about what he would do. On tonight's 'Larry King Live' (weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN), Larry had on a couple of so-called "experts," who predicted that LeBron would move to New York. Incorrect! Very incorrect! Still, it's interesting to watch "experts" be immediately proved wrong at something, so that's fun.

Then, LeBron James actually told us what city he was going to. It was presented as a one-hour special on ESPN. (Thu., 9PM ET). Mr. James chose the Miami Heat. Chris Bosh also just joined that team during this free-agent period. So it'll be James, Bosh, and guard Dwayne Wade on the team.

LeBron James Really Needs a One Hour "Special"... He REALLY Does!

LeBron James For those of you not up-to-date on the comings and goings of basketball warlock LeBron James, ESPN will be airing a one-hour special focusing on him tonight at 9PM ET.

What's the "special" about, you ask? A chronicle of his freakish career? A montage of highlights? A story about LeBron teaching a quadriplegic how to dunk? Nope. None of those. Unfortunately.

No, tonight at 9PM ET, we'll finally know which team LeBron will be on. That's it. Information that you will inevitably be able to decipher by looking at his shirt will be the subject of a one hour television "special."

A Busboy Defeats the NBA on 'Jimmy Kimmel'Busboy Ricardo Reyes is the 'Pop-a-Shot' master. He has defeated all challengers at the mini-basketball game, and his challengers have included NBA All-Stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. (You can see his victories here for yourself.)

Jimmy Kimmel and his staff discovered 'Pop-a-Shot' prodigy Reyes in a local bar, and brought him on the show. In addition to beating LeBron and Kobe at the game, Reyes has also beaten Charles Barkley and Carmelo Anthony. And so, what reward does Reyes get for his mini-basketball dominance?

Why, a new car, of course! On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night' (Tue., 8PM ET on ABC), Kimmel awards the unsuspecting Ricardo with a brand new Ford Mustang. And then, Reyes drives off into the sunset, the undefeated champion of 'Pop-a-Shot.' Perhaps one day he will return -- if his title ever needs defending. Until then, Mr. Reyes, we bid you adiós.
