Cate Finally Admits Why She's Been So Angry Since Getting Fired on 'Life Unexpected' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 22nd 2010 6:02AM
'Life Unexpected'Ever since Cate (Shiri Appleby) got fired from her radio co-hosting job with husband Ryan (Kerr Smith) on 'Life Unexpected' (Tue., 9PM on CW), there's been a bubbling tension at home. She channeled it into a massive cleaning frenzy, but it wasn't until Ryan talked about her taking a lesser job back at the station that the truth of her anger came out.

Ryan was trying to encourage his wife facing unemployment in a very difficult job market. It's an accurate reflection of the situation many Americans are stuck in, except that Cate does have an opportunity. It's just not an ideal one. She could take back the job she had before she went on the air with Ryan "It's the only idea that I have that will keep us working together," Ryan explained.

"Then why didn't you quit?" Cate countered. "Because that would have kept us together!"

'Life Unexpected' Star Shiri Appleby on Playing a Mother, Snooki Loving 'Roswell' and More

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 21st 2010 5:00PM
Shiri ApplebyOn The CW's 'Life Unexpected,' 31-year-old actress Shiri Appleby plays the mother of a 16-year-old girl named Lux. In real life, Appleby doesn't have any children and is only 12 years older than the actress who plays her daughter. Still, she told TV Squad last week that she feels a kinship with her character, Cate, a radio host who was recently reunited with the child she gave up for adoption in high school.

"There's a lot of me in her," she said, "[like] being really committed to your job and wanting to do things right. There's a bit of a perfectionist in both of us. I make a lot of mistakes but I know how to apologize later. She does that, which I really respect. She's trying to learn."

During the show's first season, Cate struggled with a love triangle between her co-host and fiance, Ryan, and Lux's father, Baze while trying to get her life together. After the jump, find out what else Appleby had to say about her motherly instincts, choosing between Baze and Ryan, and her beloved WB series, 'Roswell.'

'Life Unexpected': Is Lux Trapped in a Fire? (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Sep 15th 2010 10:13AM
'Life Unexpected': Lux May Be Trapped in a FireOn 'Life Unexpected' (Tue., 9PM ET on CW), Baze awakes to the sound of a fire alarm. It's the bar. He, Math and Jamie find it fully ablaze, and are helpless to stop it without the fire department. Baze calls Cate to tell him everyone's OK (though the bar is not). She wants to talk to their teenage daughter Cate. Uh, Cate isn't there.

"She said that she stayed at the bar last night," says a worried Cate. Baze replies, "She left me a note -- she's staying at your place!"

"Are you 100 percent sure that Lux is not in there?!" screams Cate. "I didn't see her! I didn't see her!" yells Baze, but he fears the worst and launches back into the smoky bar.

'Life Unexpected'['Life Unexpected' - 'Ocean Uncharted']

"I guess Kelly was right -- you can't have it all." --Cate

Not having it all -- Cate's eternal struggle on 'Life Unexpected.' Will the Portland radio show host ever get it together? Judging from the show's season 2 premiere, that answer is decidedly no. At least not yet. Now that Cate's personal life is going well -- she just married her co-host Ryan -- her professional life is due for some upheaval. Enter Kelly Campbell, the new co-host the station brought in while Cate and Ryan were on their honeymoon. Unfortunately for Cate, instead of the new girl becoming a third co-host, Cate was fired.

'Life Unexpected' Creator Liz Tigelaar on 'One Tree Hill' Crossover, New Characters and More

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 14th 2010 1:00PM
'Life Unexpected'It's pretty easy to look like the good guy when you take back your fiance after she rejects your marriage proposal, changes her mind, reveals that she secretly gave up a baby for adoption at 16, then sleeps with her baby daddy during the single day you spend apart before officially getting engaged.

There's gotta be a dark side in there somewhere, right? Liz Tigelaar, creator of The CW's 'Life Unexpected,' knows that although "he really is a great guy," there's probably something wrong with Portland radio host Ryan (Kerr Smith) for marrying his co-host Cate (Shiri Appleby), who's a big bundle of nonstop drama. "To be with somebody like Cate, he has to be, on some level, f***ed up," she told TV Squad last week when talking about the show's second season.

'Life Unexpected' will begin to explore what, exactly, makes Ryan f***ed up with the arrival of a new character. Read on for more about who the mystery lady is, the scoop on Lux's flirtation with a new teacher in school ("Once you feel something for somebody it's hard to turn those feelings off"), and more deets on the 'One Tree Hill' crossover ("The CW said we had to do a crossover").

'Life Unexpected' Season 2 Review

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 14th 2010 10:45AM
When it debuted last January, 'Life Unexpected,' the story of a foster kid who finds her biological parents, was cuter than a basket of puppies.

'Life Unexpected' (9PM ET, the CW) is still plenty adorable this year, and in its briskly paced, satisfying season 2 premiere, it makes a concerted attempt to shake up the elements that made the show's soapier elements increasingly tiresome in its first season.

Listen Up: It's National Radio Day. What Are Your Favorite Radio-Centric Shows?

by Jean Bentley, posted Aug 20th 2010 4:00PM
RadioVideo might not have killed the radio star after all.

Since today is National Radio Day (the Internet says so!), we decided to take a look back into the annals of TV history and round up our favorite radio-centric shows.

Turns out, there are plenty of series that take place in the wonderful world of radio, and that's not even counting all the other shows with awesome episodes revolving around a radio station call-in contest. (OK, maybe we're just thinking about that one episode of 'Saved by the Bell' when Zack used his brick of a cell phone to call in to a trivia contest so he could win a tropical vacation. Remember that? No? Just us?)

After the jump are four of our favorite shows about all things radio ...

Three More Join the Cast of 'Life Unexpected'

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 13th 2010 12:40PM
Shaun SiposNow that the issues involving Lux's family situation have been resolved on the CW's 'Life Unexpected,' it's time for the show to start moving into a more traditional soap direction. To help, creators have brought in three fresh new faces, one for each of the leads. The Ausiello Files is reporting the additions of Shaun Sipos, Arielle Kebbel and Amy Price-Francis to the cast.

Sipos, who was last seen on the short-lived CW reboot 'Melrose Place,' takes on the role of Eric, a new teacher at Westmonte High. As the role is described as recurring, we think it's pretty safe to guess that Lux (Britt Robertson) is going to have a new crush come the new school year.

Kebbel ('Gilmore Girls') is Paige, the new girl in town. While she'll reportedly end up tending bar for Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) when a new hot chick shows up, you can bet Baze will be interested in more than her bartending skills.

by Andrew Scott, posted May 18th 2010 1:55PM
One Tree HillIt looks like 'One Tree Hill' will live on for another season

According to the Live Feed, the CW gave the longrunning series a surprise renewal order today, while also picking up the low-rated freshman dramedy 'Life Unexpected.'

This will mark 'One Tree Hill's' eighth season on the air.

Meanwhile, the CW also made room for two newbie series. First up is 'Nikita,' starring Maggie Q as a rogue assassin.

Also getting picked up today: 'Hellcats,' a new series about a competitive cheerleading squad at a Southern university. Ashley Tisdale of 'High School Musical' fame stars alongside singer-actress Aly Michalka.

And now for the bad news: The CW has decided not to renew its 'Melrose Place' reboot for a second season, according to Variety. 'Merlose' is the network's only scripted series not returning next season.

Apparently, Heather Locklear can't save everything.

Fox and CW Shows On the Bubble

When considering the future of some shows on Fox and the CW, in the case of the former, there are only a couple of programs on the fence. Fox, overall, has had a strong year highlighted by the success of 'Glee,' which trumps nearly any disappointment execs might have over already cancelled shows like 'Sons of Tucson' or 'Past Life.'

On the other hand, the CW has a few hours teetering on the brink amid some solid, if not spectacular, already renewed shows like 'Vampire Diaries' and 'Supernatural.' To check the threat assessment for the Fox and CW programs on the bubble, read on:

Cate Rejects Baze on 'Life Unexpected' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Apr 13th 2010 3:38AM
Life Unexpected, Cate rejects BazeWell, Baze, you goofball. You can't dash to the church just in time to tell the woman you love how you feel about her, and then expect her to fall into your arms. That's not how it happens in real life, and it's not how it happened on 'Life Unexpected' (Mon, 8PM ET on The CW).

Cate had already made her choice, and it wasn't you. Nope, you got there just in time to hear the minister say, "I now pronounce you husband and wife." Better luck next time, buddy.

Watch the video after the jump.
