'Life Unexpected' Series Finale: Were You Satisfied?

by Jean Bentley, posted Jan 19th 2011 10:15AM
Life UnexpectedLast night, The CW aired what is likely (but not officially) the series finale of 'Life Unexpected.' While the family drama was full of throwback WB charm, it failed to connect with enough viewers to keep it on the air.

In the two-hour episode, the series wrapped up all of its loose ends in a giant bow fit for a Christmas car commercial. But you know what? It was satisfying to find out what happened to the characters we'd grown to know and love. The ending wasn't all happy, but it sure was neat. Guess that's what happens when you know how much time you have left.

'Life Unexpected': Cate Dramatically Reveals Baby News Over Thanksgiving Dinner (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Dec 1st 2010 8:40AM
Cate Reveals Pregnancy on 'Life Unexpected'On 'Life Unexpected' (Tue., 9PM ET on CW), a few people know that Cate is pregnant -- but not the baby daddy. At Thanksgiving dinner, everybody's dropping hints to Ryan, and it's stressing Cate out.

"Oh, I think Cate has some buns in the oven," says Gabby. Cate's mom makes a connection between baby peas and (you guessed it) babies.

Cate snaps: "Mom, stop! ... It is our first Thanksgiving with Lux and Tasha, and ... nothing's going the way that I would like it to!" Cate takes a swig of wine, then realizes she shouldn't be drinking. She spits it out -- all over the turkey. All eyes are on her to explain what on earth is going on. "I'm pregnant," she announces.

'Life Unexpected' Star Britt Robertson on Her Character's Future, the Mood On Set and Wrapping Up the Show

by Jean Bentley, posted Nov 30th 2010 2:00PM
Britt Robertson on 'Life Unexpected'When a network declines to pick up the second half of a television season, it's usually a sign that the show won't return for another year. Most people would probably throw in the towel -- but not the cast and crew of 'Life Unexpected.'

When star Britt Robertson spoke with TV Squad a couple of weeks ago, she said the bad news only made her work harder. "It's so easy to be like 'Alright, let's close up the shop,'" she said. "But there are so many people who love the show and are having such a great time on it that it's just made us fight harder to show The CW what they're missing out on."

In the final four episodes of season 2, Robertson's character, Lux, will continue her illicit relationship with her English teacher ("It's so wrong, but so good!" Robertson said, and it will unfold into "some pretty big situations.") and deal with the abusive foster family she lived with during middle school ("There are some pretty big storylines involving that.").

Lux Confronts Her Violent Former Foster Dad on 'Life Unexpected' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Nov 17th 2010 10:00AM
Lux Confronts Foster Parents on 'Life Unexpected'On 'Life Unexpected' (Tue., 9PM ET on CW), Lux has had an usual upbringing. So it's no surprise the teenager's high school homecoming experience would be unconventional too. On the doorstep of her old foster home, dressed in homecoming dance finery, Lux defends herself against her former foster mom's accusations regarding her husband.

"What about what he did to me? I didn't just push myself down a flight of stairs; I didn't just punch myself in the chest!" says Lux.
She responds, "I think you're confused and you're troubled, just like you were when you lived here,"

Lux's ex-foster dad appears and tells her to "get off [the] property." He then grabs her by the hair and drags her violently down the steps, as she screams and the dog starts barking. Lux's friend soon comes to the rescue, grabbing a shovel and deftly whacking him on the back of the head.

Emma Caulfield on 'Life Unexpected': 'It's a Show Worthy of a Better Push Than It Has'

by Jean Bentley, posted Nov 16th 2010 5:10PM
Emma CaulfieldWhen Emma Caulfield called TV Squad a few weeks ago to talk about 'Life Unexpected,' The CW brass hadn't yet decided that they weren't going to order a full season of the sophomore series.

But even before the bad news, Caulfield expressed her disappointment at the show's struggle for ratings. "It's a show worthy of a better push than it has," she told us. "It's worthy of a life. It'd be a loss, I think -- definitely, actually -- to not let it run its course."

Aside from the show's bubble status, though, the Vancouver set seems like a happy place. Caulfield said she and her castmates hang out regularly because they genuinely like each other, and they love the show they're working on. She relates to her character, Emma, in a way that has nothing to do with the fact that they share the same name.

"She's got a lot going on," Caulfield said. "Emma appears very together and very confident, but she's got a lot of baggage. She's a very complex individual."

Is 'Life Unexpected' Canceled? CW Passes on More Season 2

by Chris Harnick, posted Nov 3rd 2010 10:40AM
Life UnexpectedWell, this could be the end of the line, 'LUX' fans. The CW has passed on the back nine episodes of 'Life Unexpected,' making season 2 a 13-episode season.

Whether it'll be a season or series finale in January remains to be seen. According to Zap2It, The CW will make the official decision in May, but it's not looking good. When The CW handed out full season orders to other fledgling shows such as 'Nikita,' 'One Tree Hill' and 'Hellcats,' leaving 'Life Unexpected' in limbo, it wasn't a good sign.

'Life Unexpected' executive producer Liz Tigelaar confirmed the news on Facebook. "Hey peeps. It's true, it's real, no back nine," she wrote. "But stranger things have happened when people are invested. So keep watching. We still have half a GREAT season to show you and who knows!!!" [sic]

'Life Unexpected': Eric Gives His Pupil Lux Mixed Signals (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Oct 20th 2010 6:50AM
Lux Talks with Eric on 'Life Unexpected''Life Unexpected' (Tue., 9PM ET on CW) offers viewers an unusual student-teacher conference. Eric is dating Paige. But Lux, his student, has had a crush on him for ages. Lux's grades aren't good, and his private tutorials don't seem to be helping.

"You can't make this personal or fail out of school just because you're upset about me and Paige," he tells Lux. She replies, "I was failing out long before you showed up!"

Why does he so desperately want to continue tutoring her? "Because maybe tutoring is the only way I can actually spend time with you without it being wrong, OK?" Eric says. "It's the only thing that we're actually allowed to do together ... I don't want to give up getting to know you."

Wait, so is this a case of forbidden love? Or rather, that he's into Paige but wants to maintain a close friendship with a crushing high schooler? Neither is a very good idea, but talk about mixed messages.

Shaun Sipos Talks 'Life Unexpected,' Honorary Canadians and Crushing on a Teacher

by Jean Bentley, posted Oct 19th 2010 3:00PM
Shaun SiposEric Daniels, the clean-cut English teacher Shaun Sipos plays on The CW's feel-good family drama 'Life Unexpected,' is very different from David Breck, the bad boy master thief he played on last season's short-lived 'Melrose Place' reboot. But that's okay with Sipos.

"I'm glad," he told TV Squad. "Part of what drew me to doing this role is because it's completely opposite of David. There's no malice, there's no lies, there's no trickery, no deceit. He's not running around and hooking up with girls all over the place."

In fact, Eric is a polite high school teacher with an "unorthodox," hands-on teaching style. "I think he's very passionate about helping people," Sipos said. But Eric does have one skeleton in his closet -- a romantic spark with Lux, one of his students.

Read on for Sipos's own experience crushing on a teacher in high school, whether or not he would've hooked up with her and how long he thinks Eric will stick around 'Life Unexpected' (it's longer than you think).

The CW's 'Life Unexpected' and 'One Tree Hill' Crossover: How Was It?

by Jean Bentley, posted Oct 13th 2010 1:20AM
'Life Unexpected' and 'One Tree Hill' CrossoverAll that promotion for two measly scenes?

After weeks of heavy P.R., the loudly trumpeted 'Life Unexpected' and 'One Tree Hill' crossover on The CW Tuesday night amounted to, well, not much.

Haley and Mia traveled from their home in Tree Hill (at 8PM on The CW's Tuesday night lineup) to a music festival in Portland hosted by Ryan and Cate's radio station (in the timeslot immediately following their own). To an unfamiliar viewer, the concept of their transplant into 'Life Unexpected' could've felt contrived. In fact, it was quite believable within the 'One Tree Hill' world. Mia and Haley are established musicians on the show, so actually broadcasting one of their concerts (instead of just vaguely referring to offscreen performances) was not out of the ordinary at all.

As for 'Life Unexpected,' the integration of the musicians wasn't any worse than the uber-'90s bands of the week on any given episode of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' but one of the writers is clearly a HUGE Ben Lee fan.

Kate Voegele Talks the 'One Tree Hill' and 'Life Unexpected' Crossover, Facebook Stalking Exes and More

by Jean Bentley, posted Oct 12th 2010 4:50PM
Kate Voegele on 'Life Unexpected'It's hard to tell what Kate Voegele's day job actually is. As a top-selling musician, she's released two albums and toured around the world. As an actress, she's played musician Mia Catalano on 'One Tree Hill' for four seasons. To make things more confusing, the songs Mia sings on the show are actually Kate's.

When Voegele called TV Squad last week from her family's home in Ohio, she said fans are very good about separating Kate from Mia. "That's what I wanted from the start -- for this to be a great way of exposing my music to everybody but also for people to see [my acting and singing] as separate. It can be so hard to be taken seriously as both. I think 'One Tree Hill' has done a great job of helping me figure out how to show people that I'm able to do both things."

Tonight, fans of another series will see Kate show off both her talents when The CW broadcasts a crossover episode that brings Mia and her fellow 'One Tree Hill' character Haley to a fictional music festival on 'Life Unexpected.' Read on for Kate's thoughts on Facebook stalking exes, playing Mia in a new setting and getting back into the studio to record her third album.

Will Ryan and Cate Try for a Baby on 'Life Unexpected'? (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Oct 6th 2010 8:55AM
Cate May Not Want a Baby on 'Life Unexpected''Life Unexpected' (Tue., 9PM ET on CW) could become "Life Expecting" when a fight between Ryan and Cate leads to makeup sex and the decision to have a baby together.

"So we're really doing it, huh? ... You gonna stop drinking champagne, go off the pill? ... Trying for a baby's going to be fun," Ryan says.

But when he leaves the room, Cate rolls over, digs around in her purse for birth-control pills and... takes one. Oh. So evidently Cate's not ready. No chance of a show-title change after all.

Exclusive First Look at the CW's 'Life Unexpected' and 'One Tree Hill' Crossover (VIDEO)

by Laura Prudom, posted Oct 4th 2010 7:30PM
Bethany Joy Galeotti and Shiri ApplebyWhat do 'One Tree Hill' and 'Life Unexpected' have in common? Aside from a Tuesday timeslot on the CW and a knack for heartfelt drama, the two shows also have the honor of headlining the CW's first ever coast-to-coast crossover event on Tue., Oct. 12.

Since the dramas are all about dysfunctional family units and both feature semi-unreliable (but very attractive) guys called Nate, this crossover seems like a no-brainer to us, and maybe it'll pave the way for another bi-coastal exchange ('Gossip Girl' meets '90210', anyone?) if the fans approve.

Check out our exclusive promo for the special show -- which features some awesome musical guest stars -- after the jump.

'Life Unexpected': A Fight Reveals Who Burned Down the Bar -- and More (VIDEO)

'Life Unexpected': A Fight Reveals Two SecretsBaze is working at a charity golf tournament on 'Life Unexpected' (Tue., 9PM ET on CW) and invites his ex Cate and her fiancé Ryan to take part. Good intentions, but bad decision.

Ryan thinks Cate and Baze's teenage daughter Lux has stolen the $300 missing from Cate's purse. Cate is incensed that he'd accuse her over his sister Paige. "Can you guys hit pause on this episode of 'Jerry Springer'? You're distracting the client," warns Baze.

They continue to bicker until Baze admits that Paige recently gave him 300 bucks. "She is paying me money because ... she burned down my bar," he says sheepishly. Turns out, the cigarette that started the fire was hers.

"At 7 in the morning?" asks an incredulous Cate. Then she and Ryan put two and two together. Ryan screams, "Do not tell me you slept with my sister!" Cate adds, "Of course he slept with your sister! He slept with my sister! He sleeps with everybody's sister!"

Meanwhile, the client has been standing nearby, listening to the whole thing.
