How to apply for just about any game/reality show on TV

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 22nd 2007 6:40PM
1 vs 100Of all the e-mails and comments we get here at the fictional TV Squad HQ, the ones we see the most -- besides the ones that think we're a bunch of hacks who don't deserve the pay we get -- are ones that ask us how a person can get on one of the numerous game or reality shows that are on the air right now.

I have to tell you, we're flattered that you folks think we have the inside connections within the television industry that will be allow us to fast-track our readers onto shows like Survivor or Deal or No Deal. But, alas, we're just a bunch of grunts like you; we don't have a "guy" who can get us through the back door of these shows. In fact we don't even have a "guy" who can get us a discount at the car wash.

But what we can do for you is comb the web to find the various instructions on how you can get on these shows. And, no surprise, the networks have made those instructions readily available on the web. After the jump is the list of links we found so far. We'll update this list as we find more shows and instructions. And feel free to send us ones you've discovered either via our tips e-mail or in the comments section below. Enjoy and good luck...

by Julia Ward, posted Mar 13th 2007 3:43PM
Tim Gunn Project RunwayProject Runway is gearing up for a four city casting tour beginning March 30th in Los Angeles and continuing to Chicago, Miami and New York City. If you want to make the season four cut, you'll need to bring three garments of your own design, a picture portfolio and your completed application - soon to be available via BravoTV.com. And, don't worry, Tim Gunn will be back despite his many extracurricular activities.

In the interest of helping further your design career, I've put together a brief primer for success on Project Runway - from the auditions to the final catwalk.

On the 10th day of Festivus, TV gave to me

Lost TV...ten Lost mysteries in need a-solving

Lost is one Pandora's Box that doesn't look like it's ever gonna shut. The mysteries unleashed by the series are hardly in short supply, and they are well cataloged online.

In an attempt to not appear entirely redundant, I've decided to focus on the 10 mysteries that I think even the writers can't solve. These are the mysteries that I doubt we'll ever get a truly satisfying conclusion to because, frankly, I'm not sure the writers always know what they're doing. Even if they do, the chances that Lost's eventual payoff could ever equal the energies fans have poured into decoding the show are slim. A false lead here. An obscure reference there. Lost's loose ends are going nowhere.

My Adult (Swim) fantasy

by Adam Finley, posted Oct 26th 2006 7:02PM

Adam as a South Park kidI just got off the phone with Dino Stamatopoulos, creator of Moral Orel (look for the interview soon), and since I just finished talking with someone for over an hour about animation and comedy I thought I would indulge myself with a kind of "fantasy post" I've been wanting to do for a long time.

Below you will find a schedule that shows how I would program Adult Swim if it were its own twenty-four hour network. I guess the time zone would be CST, since I live in Minnesota, but don't worry about that, it's just for fun.

Oprah, Martha make Fortune's 'Most Powerful' list

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 3rd 2006 10:38AM
oprah winfrey; martha stewartOn Fortune magazine's annual ranking of the Top 50 Most Powerful Women in Business, Oprah comes in at number 8 (Rich mentioned this, too) and Martha Stewart at number 28. Fortune included Oprah because of her vast empire, including a new satellite radio channel called Oprah & Friends. She was bumped down from number 4 on last year's list. Number one this year is Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo. I'm not sure how they rank the women, but I think if Oprah told everyone to stop drinking Pepsi, Indra would be in trouble.

And, while Martha's stock is flat and her version of The Apprentice failed, she makes the list because of her big-time partnerships with KB Home, Macy's and Kodak... plus she still has a very successful publishing business.

My Name Is Earl season two -- an early look

by Michael Sciannamea, posted Sep 20th 2006 1:43PM

Jason Lee as Earl HickeyI managed to get a copy of the first three episodes of the new season of My Name Is Earl yesterday, and I watched the first episode "Very Bad Things" last night. After a successful first season and a summer of wondering how the show will evolve, I, at the very least, got a chance to get some perspective on how things will go.

TiVo launches Guru Guide

by Adam Finley, posted May 22nd 2006 6:27PM

tivoToday TiVo launched Guru Guide, a new service where editors, critics, and experts from various magazines create lists of shows about a certain topic. For example, a person from Automobile Magazine may suggest shows having to do with cars or auto racing. The service, which is not available to subscribers who got TiVo through DirecTV, will allow one to record all the shows on one of the lists, or to pick which ones they want. Right now, the lists can only be obtained through TiVo's Web site, but the company says they'll be added to the television command screen in the next few months. The idea, basically, is to utilize the single focus of magazines to create "networks." As a TiVo user, I guess I'm mildly interested in this, as it may inform me of shows I haven't heard of and might like. I couldn't imagine letting some stranger from Star Magazine choose all my shows for me, though. What do you guys think?

The Five: Corporations

by Adam Finley, posted May 22nd 2006 8:28AM

dinosaurs bossHey, check your watch. Yeah, it's time for another episode of The Five where we list stuff in groups of five, and you throw down some more in the comments. It's both fun and educational. Today we're talking about the best fictional corporations on television, so let's get into it:

Acme: Are you a coyote who has devoted his life to catching a single bird? If so, the Acme Corporation has everything you need from anvils to rocket sleds to exploding birdseed. Of course, none of these things come with any guarantee, but I'm sure they'll work out just fine for you. According to Wikipedia, Acme was part of the Warner Bros. cartoon universe early on, having first appeared in "Buddy's Bug Hunt" in 1935.

The Five: Best single-word catchphrases

by Keith McDuffee, posted Mar 2nd 2006 10:41AM
homer simpson dohOriginally I was going to list the best catchphrases in general, not limiting my choices to single words. But, as we only list five in our The Five posts, I knew early on that it would be a near impossible task to list only five favorites. So, here we have it, the five best single-word catchphrases of popular TV characters.

1. "Aeyyy!" OK, so technically this isn't a "word," but you can't deny the popularity of the trademark call of coolness from the one and only Fonz of Happy Days.

The Five: HGTV shows I'm addicted to

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 31st 2006 10:37AM
5. Design on a Dime. I've lost track of how many hosts and designers they've had on this show, but it's still entertaining. I get inspired by their do-it-yourself projects, even though I know I do not and never will have any crafty skills. The crew tends to successfully pull off a $1,000 makeover that seems within reach, for those of you with actual skills.

4. Curb Appeal. Being a homeowner, I find inspiration in this show. It's amazing what some planters and a little landscaping will do to improve the look of a home. I also like that they have the homeowners pitch in to do most of the work, which makes the show more accessible.

Best and Worst of 2005: Adam's list

by Adam Finley, posted Jan 3rd 2006 9:00AM
wonder showzenDo you know what I liked about TV in 2005, Beverly? Let me tell you:

Perfect Hair Forever: Okay, Stroker and Hoop has grown on me, I don't think Squidbillies is all that bad, and I still haven't quite made up my mind about 12 Oz. Mouse, but damn, Perfect Hair Forever, the Williams Street artisans ribald and aloof take on the anime genre was by far the best new offering on Adult Swim this year. In typical anime fashion, only six episodes were created. I hope for a DVD release.

Wonder Showzen: Despite my local cable provider moving MTV2 around so much that it makes my Tivo cry, I have hunted down every airing of this subversive "kids show" like a madman. There is nothing else like this on TV right now, and it rivals South Park in just how far it's willing to go to make its audience uncomfortable. A second season kicks off this year.

Everybody Hates Chris: It's a good show, plain and simple. It's not the Holy Grail, as a lot of pre-show hype made it out to be, but it is an unpretentious, hilarious look at what it's like to grow up with limited means in an environment that isn't always fair.
