Men change: Regis Philbin and Donald Trump
When a man gets older and he finds himself vulnerable to mortality, and that which affects his heart and his mental health, there are no proper words to describe the fear and anticipation. By now, the news has been announced that Regis will be leaving the show to undergo bypass surgery. Although you might have read articles about the situation, there really isn't anything like watching the exact moment he describes it. Something about the delicate nature and his soft spoken voice that reminds you of how fragile life is, it really tugs at your soul. No one ever wants to see anything bad happen to Regis.
On a completely opposite spectrum...
Louis CK comedy special on HBO this Saturday - VIDEO
Louis CK is one of my favorite comedians of all time. When I say "of all time" I don't just mean the time during which I've been alive, I mean since the universe came into existence. He's even funnier than that fish who crawled out of the sea on a pair of legs and said, "I just came out of the water, and boy are my newly-formed lungs tired!" He's also much funnier than that stupid joke I just made.
One of the things I love about Louis CK is that having kids hasn't changed his comedy in the slightest. Yes, he talks about his kids now, but he's still as raunchy and hysterical as he ever was. It's refreshing to watch a comedian who doesn't fall into the usual comedy cliches about being a father.

Freaks and Geeks reunion (of sorts) at UCB Theater
If you never saw Freaks and Geeks, you probably don't remember much about it because memories are formed by first experiencing the thing you later remember. For example, I have no memory of my recent trip to Florida because I've never taken a trip there before. If you did watch the show, however, you were lucky enough to see one of the best television shows in the last ten years, and one of the most accurate portrayals of high school life. So accurate, in fact, that it was sometimes uncomfortable to watch, especially if your school experience was anything but ideal. If you happen to find yourself in Los Angeles on August 31, Paul Goebel of Beat the Geeks will be hosting his King of TV talk show at the UCB Theater and chatting with four of the actors from the series: John Francis Daley, Samm Levine, Busy Philipps, and Steve Bannos. It should be loads of fun.Midnight Money Madness coming to TBS
We've all been there. It's late at night, and you're totally wired and all you want to do is watch something on television that you normally wouldn't find entertaining, but at this particular moment your brain is just slightly out to lunch so it's willing to view something below your usual acceptance level. TBS apparently hopes to tap into the bored insomniac market with a new viewer participation game show called Midnight Money Madness, which kicks off at midnight (natch) on August 28. The show will have two versions, one East coast and one West coast, and will allow the people at home to play the games by calling in, or text messaging, or whatever. There will also be occasional comedians and man-on-the street segments. That doesn't sound even remotely interesting to me, but that's because it's only early evening as I type this. Tonight when I'm still awake and bored with watching Betty Boop cartoons on my video iPod, the show may actually be the only thing saving me from absolute boredom. This is either a really dumb idea or an ingenious one, I haven't figured out which.Hannity does what now?
Apparently, he sucks ass. At least, that's what a man has written on a sign which he held up behind Hannity's partner Alan Colmes during a live segment of Hannity and Colmes that was captured thanks to a Tivo user. The veracity of Hannity's alleged ass sucking notwithstanding, I think we can all agree it's just plain rude to do something like this in public. The best way to tell someone they suck ass is to write it inside a card, seal the card in an envelope, don a top hat and tails, and present it to them while bowing politely. This is all laid out in chapter 13 of Emily Post's 1922 book Etiquette; it's right after the chapter on how to inform someone they're a douchebag by sewing the word into a cloth napkin. Seriously, people.American Idol: TAYLOR WINS! (finale)
Oh man, I've been patiently twiddling my thumbs for the last 3 hours until the finale aired on the West Coast, so I could finally post this. Taylor Hicks is our new American Idol, and I couldn't be happier. Well, I could be (sigh...Chris). But if I can't have Chris, then I'm happy with the Silver Fox. (I hate that nickname by the way. It makes me feel like I've got a crush on an old man. What's the opposite of being a pedophile? Is there a word for that? 'Cause I might have it.) They really took it down to the last minute too. I was biting my nails at 1 hour and 59 minutes, worried that my TiVo was about to pop up with the dreaded "Erase Now? or Save?" quandary. I felt like I was Mr. Eko on Lost, watching that damn clock. But right at the final seconds, Ryan said Taylor's name. Yes! The crazy windmill-dancing bastard pulled it off! I understand why Taylor's dad was crying, but why was David Hasselhoff?

American Idol: Modern Hits...or Misses?
For lack of a better word or description, last night's show was weird and anti-climatic. At first, I was really excited about the contestants doing modern hits from the last 6 years, but then...nothing happened. I kept waiting for that one really great performance that would put the show into overdrive, but it never came.
First off, the show was cut down to a hour last night since there are only 10 contestants left. This made everything feel very rushed. It felt less like a national hit show and more like a filler before House came on. Secondly, all the judges were in agreement last night, and yet they were still fighting. Always weird. Thirdly, lack of time translated into lack of Seacrest zingers. Seacrest zingers are always the cheesiest of zings, and yet, I miss them when they're gone. It's like getting a dollar every year in your birthday card from Grandma. A dollar doesn't get you much (heck, it doesn't get you anything), but that first year when it's not in there...it burns. Finally, I think Kevin might have been eliminated prematurely. I'm convinced that if given the chance, he would have performed Britney Spears' "Toxic" and it would have been the best thing to happen to American Idol since Bobby sung the praises of the Copacabana.
Another Idol controversy?
It seems every season we have enough American
Idol scandals (or possible scandals) to keep the tabloids and message boards busy full-time. Now comes word that Idol finalist Chris Daughtry - praised
for his original take on Johnny Cash's "I Walk The Line" - might have actually ripped off the style and the
arrangement from a 2001 version of the song by the group Live. And Simon actually praised Daughtry for "being
himself."Who knows if this is really a "scandal" or just a matter of Daughtry knowing of the Live version of the song and wanting to do that style of song instead of the Johnny Cash-like version.
