Can YOU understand what they're saying on Love Monkey?

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 25th 2006 8:57AM
I Can't hear Love Monkey!I know my hearing's not the best. Too many years of going to live rock shows in tiny clubs and too many days of blasting my car stereo have seen to that. But I can usually hear at least 95% of what's being said on most of the shows on the air today, even quick-talking shows like Scrubs and Gilmore Girls. But for some reason, I only seem to be catching about 70% of what's being said on Love Monkey. I'm watching tonight's episode as I type this; I have the volume cranked up but I'm still not catching any more than I was before.

Are they mumbling? Talking faster than any human can possibly do without a script? Does the sound mix have the music turned up way too high? Or am I going even more deaf than I thought? Let me know in the comments.

(Oh, on a side note: they really, really need to get rid of the narration. It's beyond irritating.)

Last week's winners:

1 star to Jason: "And that's when Eko knew the horrible truth... the island BBQ was not going well."
2 stars to Chris W: "Surgeon General's Warning: Second hand mysterious-security-system-soul-examining smoke may cause lung cancer, emphysema, and heart disease... Unless you're a Nigerian gangster, in which case I'll be wofting away now."
3 stars to Man: Smoke: "I'm the island's security" Eko: "Remember me from Oz." Smoke: "Um...I think I left the stove on...bye."

This week, a scene from the series premiere of Love Monkey:

Lost photogs and love monkeys: TV Guide in 60 seconds

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 16th 2006 11:44AM
  • Lost is one of the great shows of the past 10 years, but I'm sick of it being on the cover of every other issue of TV Guide. This week: Matthew Fox talks about photography.
  • For the sci-fi geek fan: collectible cards for Battlestar Galactica and Stargate! (Print only, obviously.)
  • Also in the print edition: an interview with Tom Cavanagh about his new show, Love Monkey.
  • Speaking of, Matt really likes it, but wonders if it can survive the world of CBS cop shows.
  • They also make their Golden Globe picks and catch up with Gillian Anderson.

How the creators of Love Monkey upped the ante

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 15th 2006 4:01PM
Love Monkey castI don't know about you folks in the reading audience, but I'm really looking forward to the premiere of Love Monkey, for a number of reasons. One is that I, like Bob Sassone, was a huge fan of Ed, and I love the fact that Tom Cavanagh has chosen himself another off-beat, somewhat quirky dramedy in which to star. Another thing that excites me is the fact that Tom's character is an A&R rep for a record label, so music is going to be a very big part of the show, as is a New York City music scene that has never been examined too deeply on any TV show (Think I'm wrong? Well, let's put it this way: the fact that the Friends kids were excited about going to see a Hootie and the Blowfish concert should have gotten them all forcibly removed from the West Village).

But anyone who read Kyle Smith's book Love Monkey would know that the main character, Tom Farrell, was not an A&R guy, but a copy editor for a New York Post-like tabloid. So why the change? This article in The New York Times explains it; someone suggested to the show's creator, Michael Rauch, that making Farrell a record exec would make him a bit more of a dynamic character, and adding a musical aspect to the show would make it livelier.

Ed stars taking over network TV

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 13th 2006 7:53PM

The cast of EdAnyone who knows me knows how much of a huge Ed fan I was. I even wrote an essay about it that got me more mail than anything else I've ever written.

So, it's really great to not only see Tom Cavanagh coming back to series television (in the it-looks-a-lot-like-Ed-from-the-commercials show Love Monkey). But the good news doesn't stop there: Ed's best friend is back too. Josh Randall, who played Mike Burton on Ed, is the guy who's Courting Alex on the CBS sitcom. (Hey, both on CBS - maybe Cavanagh and Randall can have lunch in the CBS cafeteria). And let's not forget Ed's love Carol Vessey: Julie Bowen is a cast member over on ABC's Boston Legal (and has a recurring role on Lost). And Michael Ian Black's Stella over on Comedy Central.

Now we just need Lesley Boone (Molly), Jana Marie Hupp (Nancy), Rachel Cronin (Shirley), and Justin Long (Warren) to get regular gigs on TV and fans will be all set.

Mid-season television preview

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 1st 2006 8:02PM
Now that 2005 is behind us, we can look forward to new and returning favorite shows all this month on television. What will you be watching?

South Beach (Wednesdays, UPN) Two hot, New York City working-class bachelors leave the big city behind to follow one of their girlfriends to South Beach, FL, only to discover that she has a new boyfriend. They get mixed up with the rich and famous in the club scene. After viewing a sneak preview on UPN's website, it looks like a guilty pleasure like The O.C., except with more sex and no high school. Jennifer Lopez is the executive producer and it co-stars Vanessa Williams as a club owner and mother to one of the main characters. South Beach premieres on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 8 pm.
