Lucy Lawless on Merkin Use in 'Spartacus' Sex Scenes (VIDEO)
by Nick Zaino, posted Jan 19th 2011 5:15PM
Lucy Lawless' role of Lucretia on the Starz series 'Spartacus' requires a bit of immodesty. The actress bares a lot of skin in explicit sex scenes, but the show uses merkins. Mer-what? Lawless explained the interesting wardrobe piece on 'The Wendy Williams Show' (weekdays, syndicated).
A merkin, or a pubic wig, covers Lawless' private body parts. So, how does one make a merkin?
What to Watch: January 17 - 23
by Stephanie Earp, posted Jan 16th 2011 11:50PM
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena - Sunday, January 23, 10PM ET/MT, The Movie Network/Movie CentralThis is a prequel to 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand', dreamed up to give lead actor Andy Whitfield time to recover from cancer before reprising his role. But no worries -- fans can expect the same subtle blend of graphic bloody violence and graphic sweaty sex scenes they've come to count on the series to deliver.
Despite a potential for camp (Lucy Lawless does star, after all), the 'Spartacus' series should soothe those missing HBO's 'Rome' and please anyone who loves a good machete fight.
Happy Birthday, 'Xena'! Our Favorite 15 Episodes
by Chris Harnick, posted Sep 4th 2010 8:01AM

Fifteen years ago, the world was introduced to a television treasure: 'Xena: Warrior Princess.' Yes, 'Xena' is a treasure, because despite what some people may think, despite its over-the-top cheesecake factor and despite its blatant disregard for history, it was a gem of a TV show. Plus, it introduced us to Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor.
'Xena' was a trailblazer. 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' 'Alias' and even newer shows such as 'Covert Affairs' and the new 'Nikita' remake owe a certain something to the beloved Warrior Princess. The series helped reshape the leading lady on TV for good, and for that reason alone, we as an audience should be eternally grateful.
'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' ... and Dish at Comic Con
by Michael Maloney, posted Jul 24th 2010 12:45PM
The cast of 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' including Andy Whitfield, Lucy Lawless, John Hannah, Viva Bianca and executive producer Stephen S. DeKnight met in rooms 6B, C and F at Comic Con on Friday to talk about the show's upcoming season.DeKnight says there are changes ahead for the legendary title character in the Starz' series second season, which is set to return next January.
"As history tell us, [Spartacus] is going to become more and more socially conscious," the exec previews. "He's going to start to see outside of his need for revenge and vengeance. He ends up leading a slave rebellion that almost brings down the Republic. There are always going to be personal stories for him, but slowly, he's going to start to see the bigger picture and do something about it."
"But he's still going to kill a lot of people?" asked the moderator.
"Quite a few," DeKnight replied.

Lucy Lawless, star of 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand,' appeared on 'The Kilborn File' (weeknights, 7PM ET on Fox). On the show, she discussed her recent trip to Italy, which she made in support of gay rights. Host Craig Kilborn asked her about the behavior of Italian men -- who are known for "goosing," or pinching women on the butt. "Over here, [that's] called assault," he added.Lawless reported that she was not actually pinched by any men: "I was there for gay pride; it didn't happen." She did express her disappointment that there was not an equivalent march in Italy for gay women. "All this for fabulousness for gay men ... but nothing for the women," she said.

Starz 'Spartacus' Gaining In Popularity
by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 8th 2010 10:35AM
We keep hearing about original series from paid channels like HBO or Showtime getting major kudos and ratings, but we never hear much about the original series from Starz, until now. Their series 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' has been picking up some serious numbers in terms of viewers since its premiere on January 22nd of this year. The show has gotten lukewarm reviews from the critics. Perhaps it's the gladiatorial combat that draws in the viewers. Or perhaps it's the proliferation of sex in the series (including some nudity on the part of former 'Battlestar Galactica' cylon/'Xena: Warrior Princess,' Lucy Lawless). Or perhaps people are confusing it with the movie 'Spartacus' that starred Kirk Douglas and was directed by Stanley Kubrick.
Starz could very well become the Cinemax of scripted programming, relying on more adult original scripted programming with lots of sex and violence in order to be a player in the game along with HBO and Showtime. Time will tell.
Lucy Lawless Heading to 'Caprica' for Final Five Arc?
by Mike Moody, posted Feb 11th 2010 10:00AM
With 'Caprica' struggling to find an audience, it seems natural for the show to hail the mother ship, 'Battlestar Galactica', for a little help. According to TV Guide, 'Caprica' will soon begin an arc that reveals the backstory of 'BSG's "Final Five" Cylons.
It's unclear if the actors who originally portrayed The Five will return for the 'BSG' prequel, but we might get a visit from another familiar Cylon face. Word is that 'Caprica' producers have already asked Lucy Lawless to reprise the role of D'Anna, one of 'BSG's most troublesome toasters.
Lucy Lawless Speaks About Sexy 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand'
by Robin Milling, posted Jan 15th 2010 12:00PM
Lucy Lawless graduates from a Princess to a Queen, playing the stunningly sensual gladiator school madam Lucretia in 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand,' an original movie on Starz airing January 22. This is not a rehashing of the classic Kirk Douglas yarn, but a far more risque interpretation. In an interview with AOL TV, Lawless insisted the bloody brutality of the gladiators and "everything goes" sexual philosophy is historically accurate.
BBCA and Starz: Lucy Lawless will get naked, and Tennant's last eps - TCA Report
by Joel Keller, posted Jul 30th 2009 1:02AM
When you're bombarded with one panel after the other, it's sometimes hard to figure out how to group them together. One writer I was sitting with at the BBC America panel, for instance, was blogging each individual panel, and was such a frantic blur of writing and Photoshopping that she developed what can best be described as SCTS (Sudden Carpal Tunnel Syndrome). You gotta do what you gotta do, I guess. Me, I figured that there were three panels that could be put in what I call the "Comic-Con group": Spartacus on Starz, and Doctor Who and Being Human on BBC America. These shows got extensive showcases in San Diego over the weekend, and there wasn't many details revealed in any of these panels that you wouldn't have heard over the din at SDCC. So I'm going to go over the three of them in brief after the jump.
Let me give you a good teaser: If you were on the fence about seeing Spartacus, the prospect of a naked Lucy Lawless may convince you.
THIS ... IS ... (an amazing trailer for Starz' new series) ... SPARTACUS!
by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 25th 2009 1:00AM
If this trailer, straight from Comic-Con International, is any indication, then January 2010 can't come soon enough! The 13-episode Starz (You read that right, Starz!) series Spartacus: Blood and Sand boasts Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), Rob Talpert (Drag Me to Hell) and Steven S. DeKnight (Smallville) executive producing. It features Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), Peter Mensa (300) and Erin Cummings (Dollhouse).Everything about this trailer makes the show look amazing. Amazing costuming, good casting and dialogue. The effects style borrows heavily from the hyper-realism of 300, which adds a great dramatic flare. Damn, what more can I say? Just watch the thing and wait with bated breath until January like me.
