Maggie Gyllenhaal on Losing an Oscar, Dancing With Madonna (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 1st 2010 1:10AM
Maggie Gyllenhaal on Losing an Oscar, Dancing With MadonnaActress Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared on 'The Graham Norton Show' (Sat., 10PM ET on BCC America). There, she discussed a (sort of) tragic loss, but also told the story of an unexpected benefit.

Maggie failed to win an Oscar award for Best Supporting Actress. She lost to eventual winner Mo'Nique. But she told host Graham Norton that she didn't think she would actually win, since her nomination was for the indie movie 'Crazy Heart.'

Though she did confess to a second or two of excitement: "When you're there... and they're opening the envelope and they say 'Mon-nnnique.' And that's a little like 'Maggie!'" Still, things didn't work out. Oh well. But Maggie didn't let her loss get to her.

Siblings can be wonderful, except for when they humiliate you through cruel and unusual pretend play like Maggie Gyllenhaal did to younger brother Jake. On 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated), Jake told the story of how his big sister forced him to pretend to be a feline while she sang tunes from the musical 'Cats.'

Maggie Gyllenhaal Gets Excited About Dancing With Madonna (VIDEO)

by Harley W. Lond, posted Mar 11th 2010 8:42PM
What do you do when you get invited to a party thrown by one of your idols? You dance with her.

Maggie Gyllenhaal grew up listening to Madonna records, dressing like Madonna and lip syncing to her music. And now that she's a star in her own right, Gyllenhaal got invited to one of Madonna's parties.

"I don't know Madonna," Gyllenhaal told Ellen DeGeneres on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' (weekdays, syndicated). But "someone introduced me to her at the party and kind of led me over to her. She didn't say hi, she just started dancing with me ... and I was drunk enough that I kinda of danced with her." And it's a good thing, too, cause later Madonna was dancing with Gyllenhaal's husband (Peter Sarsgaard).

Julia Roberts Gives Maggie Gyllenhaal Advice for Oscar Win (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Feb 26th 2010 12:30PM
If Maggie Gyllenhaal wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'Crazy Heart,' she'll follow advice given to her by Julia Roberts and not give a scripted acceptance speech, she said on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated).

"Julia Roberts said to me, 'Don't write a speech. Think about what it is you might want to say, but let it just come.' And I've taken that as advice for every single thing I've ever, ever done," she said.

Right now on Cinematical

The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their latest musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:

  • So, if in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Brad Pitt starts off as a tiny old-man, why wouldn't he end up as a giant baby? Cinematical has the answer.
  • When we were in high school, my friends and I got together with a VHS camcorder and made Scream 4. It was pretty amazing. What's weird is that even though we didn't get a film deal, Scream 4 is heading to theaters. Neve Campbell needs a job, people.
  • Granted, I've missed a lot of movies in the theaters this year, but I still think The Dark Knight is one of the best films of the year. What do you think? Check out Cinematical's top 10 list.
  • Hey, want to see something really creepy? Jerry O'Connell and his wife, Rebecca Romijn, are putting her maternity leave to good use by making Mystique and Me, a new Funny or Die video. It's quite funny and quite disturbing.
  • As much as I enjoyed The Dark Knight, I don't think Maggie Gyllenhaal and Christian Bale had a ton of chemistry -- at least not enough to make it onto the Cinematical Seven's Best On-Screen Chemistry of 2008 list.

The Daily Show: July 17, 2008 - VIDEOS

Jon StewartFirst up, congratulations to The Daily Show for their multiple Emmy nominations! Hey, Jon Stewart even grabbed a nomination for hosting the Oscars. Well done, well done. Awards night will definitely be interesting, as The Colbert Report also got lots of Emmy attention, but in the very same categories as Jon and his team. I'm so torn between the two that I may have to avoid the issue all together and just blindly root for some other show.

Secondly, if you saw The Colbert Report last night and felt a little embarrassed for Stephen Colbert for interrupting Rush's performance of "Tom Sawyer"... It was a planned joke about the length of the band's songs. I cannot believe the number of people who went online to rip on Colbert for being clueless enough to do that. Come on, as if Colbert would screw up Rush's first American TV appearance in 33 years with something like that. I feel silly for even having to clear this up.

The Daily Show: February 28, 2007

Jon Stewart"Soulless Plane": The Spirit of Strom Thurmond. Black hangar. There it is. Joke complete. Senior Cheney Chaser John Oliver, wearing what looked like Rob Riggle's massive trenchcoat, stopped by to report on the non-human qualities of Cheney. Thing is... the Cheney we've come to know and love is actually a team of extremely intelligent cyborgs. Of course, John Oliver was hysterical.

"Back in Black": Ah, always good to see Lewis Black, especially when there's Harry Potter involved. Topics of discussion include Daniel Radcliffe's current stage performance in "Equus" (Hairy Potter!), the KKK (Mexican is the new black!), and sororities (ugly chicks!).
