Major Garrett: Fox News Embraces 'Media Polarization' (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Oct 25th 2010 7:29PM
Fox News embraces the kind of ideological polarization of the media that cost Juan Williams his job at NPR, says Major Garrett, who worked for Fox News eight years before returning to print media last month.

Appearing on 'Morning Joe' (weekdays, 6AM ET on MSNBC), Garrett advanced the theory that Williams was axed from NPR not so much for his comments about being nervous when he sees Muslims on a airplane, but because NPR felt Williams' dual role on Fox News was incompatible with their brand.

Fox News rallied around Williams, in the wake of his firing, even though Williams doesn't generally articulate Fox News' right wing voice.

Nevertheless, Garrett believes that, in general, Fox News is pleased with this increasing polarization of the news media:

"For a certain amount of marketing points of view, Fox (News) actually wants to keep that (media) polarization, and say 'Look, we're different, we are dramatically different, you can see how we are different. And if you like that difference, you better come over here and you better stay here.' That is an embedded part of the marketing that happens in the news division at Fox."

Why NPR also feels the need to embrace this form of media polarization, as evidenced by their firing of Williams, is anybody's guess. We would have thought their snazzy tote bags would be enough to keep their listeners loyal.

Election Night: Fox News (Part 2)

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 4th 2008 11:21PM

Everyone's getting bored now. Megyn is running around talking to people all over the set and trying to make love to her "launchpad," while others are handing out cookies and snacks. When the election is turning into a landslide (which is how Fox News would have us think), I guess they're at a loss as to how to fill the time. "We booked the whole night for this coverage. Vamp! Vamp!" For more on why I love Fox News Election coverage, flip to the other side.

I think it's time to shake things up. Go crazy and call the whole election for McCain. Or even Nader. People will look back on it fondly and you'll be infamous in history. Just picture Brit Morgan's dour skull with the skin melting off looking at the camera with the words "McCain Projected to Win Presidency" below him. Legendary!
