Bear Grylls Conquers the Utah Wilderness on 'Man vs. Wild' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 15th 2011 6:00PM
Bear Grylls beats the Utah wilderness on 'Man Vs Wild'Getting dropped off in the middle of Utah might not sound too dangerous ... just find a highway and hitchhike your way back to Salt Lake City, right? Not so fast. As Bear Grylls found out on 'Man vs. Wild' (Fridays, 9PM on Discovery), Utah's rough outdoor terrain can be a unforgiving and dangerous.

Crossing rapids is dangerous business, no matter where the water is. Grylls had to apply his survival skills get by, tying a rope to a tree before entering the water. "I'm holding myself out of the main stream for as long as possible," he said in the voice-over. "Because when the full force of the water catches me, I'm gone."

Bear Grylls and Jake Gyllenhaal Strip Down in Freezing Temperatures on 'Man vs. Wild' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 12th 2011 9:40AM
You first heard about it a few weeks ago, but now you finally get to see Jake Gyllenhaal take his shirt off on 'Man vs. Wild' (Mon., 9PM ET on Discovery). Well, there was more to it than that.

He and Bear Grylls both shed their shirts in sub-freezing temperatures to keep them as dry as possible while they crossed a river. It's a far cry from a shirtless Gyllenhaal in the deserts of 'Prince of Persia.'

"I joined up for this, right?" Gyllenhaal lamented as he stripped. They made the crossing fairly quickly, making us cold just from watching them in the freezing water with the cameraman trying to keep the lens free of snow and ice.

In curating today's New TV on DVD, this week is definitely one for the comic fans. New DVDs are out for classic Iron Man, Super Hero Squad, Voltron, Wolverine & The X-Men -- just in time for fans to bring to Comic Con for autographs.

Top Five Death-Wish Shows on the Discovery Channel

by Jane Boursaw, posted Apr 10th 2010 9:00AM
Deadliest Catch, crab fishingDiscovery Channel unveiled its lineup for the 2010-11 season this week, and it looks like more stellar programming for the real-life stories network. You can read more about it here, but two that caught my eye are 'Engineering the Impossible,' where a team of specialists search for clues about how some of the world's most fantastic structures were built; and 'The Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero.' a documentary executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

This made me think about some of my favorite shows on the Discovery Channel, and I realized that they usually involve people in ridiculously disgusting or deadly situations. I think of these as the "real" reality shows, rather than the manufactured reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'The Amazing Race.'

Ok, we'll take Bear Grylls out of the equation, because, clearly, there's no need for him to be dropped into the wilderness and have to drink his own pee. But the others on my list are just awesome people doing death-wish jobs no one else wants to do. Follow me after the jump to see who made my top five list.

Bear Grylls Hosting 'Worst Case Scenario' Revival

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 15th 2010 8:32PM
The 'Man vs. Wild' host's career just got a little wilder.

Discovery announced that Bear Grylls will host six episode of a new survival show called 'Worst Case Scenario,' based on the popular line of books published by Quirk Books.

The show will put Grylls in a series of heightened and dangerous situations to teach viewers how to survive them or at least walk away with most of your limbs still intact.

This isn't the first time the book series has gotten the TV treatment. TBS turned the book series into a reality information show that only lasted two seasons and featured a fresh-faced Mike Rowe before he found infamy as the host of Discovery's 'Dirty Jobs'.

Bear Grylls Talks Survival Tips, Barbecued Rat and Celeb Guests on 'Man vs. Wild' - VIDEO

by Maggie Furlong, posted Jan 5th 2010 1:00PM
Bear GryllsThe audience for Discovery Channel's 'Man vs. Wild' extends far beyond adventurers and thrill-seekers. Men like to watch host Bear Grylls squeeze "potable" liquid out of elephant dung, and women ... well, most women could watch Bear Grylls to just about anything.

Returning with a brand new batch of episodes (Wed., Jan. 6, 9PM ET) -- including an urban survival adventure -- one of the latest treks made the ex-British SAS soldier feel "like a kid in a candy store." Of course, in Bear's world, that often includes barbecued rat. (Culinary sidenote: He insists rat brain does not taste like chicken.)

AOL TV got Bear to reminisce a bit about the 50 episodes he's survived, laugh about why he looks so much older on TV, quote Winston Churchill when talking about his most important tip for survival and plea to get a big name Hollywood actress to come along on an adventure with him. Cameron Diaz, are you watching?

The Show Girl Gets 'Wild' with Bear Grylls, Talks '24,' 'HIMYM''s Mother & More - VIDEO

by Maggie Furlong, posted Dec 18th 2009 4:45PM
Bear GryllsYou've got questions? I've got answers. I'm The Show Girl!

Everyone has crazy dreams, but mine are usually TV-related. Like the one I had that was all about 'Man vs. Wild' host Bear Grylls. Yeah, I know I'm not alone there. He's just so ... talented and professional, right? Right, and we go on quite an adventure this week.

I also have a little sneak peek of season 8 of '24' -- including an introduction to two new cast members -- and a I get into it about 'How I Met Your Mother''s mother. Is it Rachel Bilson? Should it be? Does anyone still care? Personally, I just can't wait to see star Neil Patrick Harris' sure-to-be-legendary song and dance number in the 100th episode.

Want more? Email me TV questions at TheTVShowGirl@aol.com -- who knows, I might just give you an answer on the show. Now watch, enjoy and come back next week for more. Until then, happy TV watching! -- By Maggie Furlong
