Modern Marvels fans pick episodes for marathon

by Adam Finley, posted Jul 16th 2007 7:03PM

modern marvelsModern Marvels, the long-running History Channel series that explores all kinds of scientific and technological feats and where they came from, is asking viewers to choose their favorite episodes for a marathon airing July 28 starting at noon (winners will be announced the day before). Viewers can go here and choose their eight favorite episodes from a list of episodes that cover topics such as 80s tech, brewing, horsepower, snackfood and harvesting. The site also features clips from the episodes. Yeah, there's only twenty episodes to choose from, which doesn't seem like much since the series has been on for over ten years, but I don't think fans will complain.

Modern Marvels began in 1994 and is narrated by Max Raphael.

Starting July 30, Modern Marvels will air every weeknight at 8:00 p.m.

Watch Human Giant if you want Human Giant to live

by Adam Finley, posted May 17th 2007 5:20PM

human giantSo I told you that on May 18 Human Giant would be taking the reins of MTV and MTV2 for 24 hours starting at noon on May 18.

A rather amusing press release has it that MTV will give the series --which features actors Paul Scheer, Aziz Ansari and Rob Huebel-- a second season if they get one million hits on their MTV site. A snippet from the release:

Human Giant takes over MTV

by Adam Finley, posted May 15th 2007 6:59PM

Human GiantOkay, so back on May 9 I found an interview with Human Giant's Paul Scheer (via CC Insider) in which Scheer said that he and his partners in crime, Aziz Ansari and Rob Huebel, would be taking over MTV for a whole 24 hours starting at noon on May 18. I couldn't find anything on MTV's site about it, and then I got distracted by something shiny and wound up forgetting about it.

Well, today The Coming cited an actual e-mail from Scheer himself that makes things a little less vague. It reads:

The more The Office changes, the more it stays the same

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 30th 2007 1:22PM
The Office: Gay Witch HuntIt's amazing to me how well episodes of The Office hold up to repeated viewings. The funny moments are just as funny, and the uncomfortable moments are just as cringe-inducing, as they were the first time around. That notion was brought home to me last night during NBC's Office marathon.

The network decided to air five "HR nightmare" episodes of the show (and one very funny episode of Andy Barker, P.I.), with new wraparounds featuring Toby the HR rep and a few of the secondary characers. All three seasons were represented, including the second episode that ever aired, "Diversity Day." The consistency of the humor from the first, little-watched season to now is pretty remarkable: Michael is inappropriate and uncomfortable, Dwight is an unrepentant suck-up, Pam is sweet with a bit of a snarky streak, and Jim is Jim. But what is really apparent when you look at the three seasons of the show mashed together is how many little things have changed.

Not into football? Watch a My Boys marathon

by Adam Finley, posted Feb 1st 2007 11:01AM

My BoysOn Sunday, February 4, the same day some kind of football game or something airs on TV, TBS will air all thirteen season one episodes of the series My Boys. The marathon begins with the first episode at 5:00pm and ends at 11:30pm. New episodes will premiere sometime this summer.

My Boys is currently the number one sitcom on ad-supported cable for adults 18 to 49, which means you actually have to watch the show if you fall into that age bracket. Otherwise, you upset the balance of the universe and before you know it the moon is crashing into the sun, the ocean tides are reversing, and owls are eating giraffes. I don't make the rules, people.

Of course, you could always record the marathon and watch the big game instead, but those of us who were artsy marching band nerds when we were younger and never cared much for football will be sitting back to enjoy some comedy.

Everybody Hates Chris marathon on VH1

by Adam Finley, posted Jan 10th 2007 3:02PM

everybody hates chrisLast night I had to play detective. Seriously, I was like Encyclopedia "Mother-F'n" Brown. I was all, like, solvin' shtuff.

I'll explain: I was poking through ye olde Tivo seeing if there was anything on worth recording, and I noticed it had some reruns of Everybody Hates Chris listed on VH1. That's odd, since the show airs on the CW. I hopped on my computer and went to VH1's site, but there was no mention of it at all. If you look at the schedule, it lists "VH1 Special" from 8pm to 10:30pm on Saturday, January 20. Well, that "special" is five back-to-back episodes of Everybody Hates Chris according to both my Tivo and TV Guide. If you haven't seen the show, you should check it out, as it's one of the better sitcoms on television right now.

Also, fans take note: new episodes of the series return to the CW on January 22.

That M*A*S*H finale really was a bloated mess

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 9th 2007 11:43AM
Goodbye, Farewell and Amen titleLast week, I caught some of TV Land's M*A*S*H marathon, and I've got to tell you, my all-time favorite show really hasn't aged much, as far as I'm concerned. If an episode I particularly enjoy is being shown, I'll still stop and watch it, knowing full well what the plot and even some of the dialogue will be. I especially like the episodes from the show's later years, which some felt were overly dramatic and preachy; I just feel they're better written and show more character development than the earlier episodes.

Anyway, as part of the marathon, TVL showed the record-setting finale, "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen," in its entirety. I've got to be honest with you; I probably haven't seen that movie in one shot since it first aired in 1983.

ABC Family runs Ugly Betty marathon on New Year's Eve

by Julia Ward, posted Dec 24th 2006 5:31PM
Salma Hayek Ugly Betty press conferenceTimed to coincide with the debut of the Be Ugly '07 marketing campaign, ABC Family is airing an all-day Ugly Betty marathon on New Year's Eve. Ironically, this announcement was made to the press by Betty's less-than-ugly producer Salma Hayek and her friends - Salma Hayek's left breast and Salma Hayek's right breast.

If you've been watching The Office on Thursday nights, this is the perfect opportunity to catch up on the adventures of the Suarez clan. The show, one of the few break-out hits of 2006, is a joyful concoction - part telenovela, part comedy. With its strong female performances and pop aesthetic, it's Almodovar for the boob tube. Between this and the Arrested Development, Reno 911, Christmas Story and Twilight Zone marathons, you may not have to talk to your own family once this holiday season.

G4 to show Arrested Development marathon on Christmas day

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 23rd 2006 5:08PM
Arrested DevelopmentLet's face it; TV in Christmas day blows, especially if you're not a fan of football, basketball, or constantly burning logs. Yeah, the various networks tend to have marathons, but many of them are holiday related, and by the time you've unwrapped the presents and drank your weight in egg nog, you're pretty damned sick of holiday cheer.

Our friends at G4 might have the perfect antidote to that: a marathon of everyone's favorite cancelled comedy, Arrested Development. According to Newsday, the network will air the entire first season of AD, starting at 9 AM Monday morning. That's eleven hours of Bluthian fun and games to help you forget that your aunt gave you socks for the tenth year in a row. Unlike a lot of comedies, the first season of AD hits its creative stride pretty quickly (I became a fan after watching the second episode), so there are no real growing pains to see here, just smart comedy. It's a heck of a lot better than hearing about Shaq and Kobe for the three billionth time.

Henson kids program debuts on Christmas Day

by Anna Johns, posted Dec 13th 2006 2:21PM
the hoobsWhen the kids are wiped out from playing with their new toys and they've come down from their sugar highs, plop them in front of the television set this Christmas. Jim Henson Co.'s The Hoobs makes its American debut on PBS KIDS Sprout on Christmas day. The award-winning preschool series marathon will air from noon to 6 pm (EST), giving you plenty of time to cook a turkey, clean up wrapping paper and take a nap.

Since I've never seen the series, I'll let the PBS press release explain what it's all about: "Set in the sunny, colorful Hoobland, The Hoobs are great explorers who learn about the planet by posing different questions to all the children that they encounter along the way." I can't be sure what it all means, but a Hoobpaedia, a Hubba Hubba Hoob and a Hoobmobile are involved, too. Sounds like your typical Jim Henson-style goofy fun with a hidden educational element. There's a clip of the show here.

Following its mega-debut on Christmas, The Hoobs will air every day at 2 pm on PBS KIDS Sprout.

TNT plans The Closer marathon for Thanksgiving

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 14th 2006 9:34AM
the closerIf you don't know Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, you should. You can meet her on Thanksgiving day, when TNT plans to air a season one marathon of The Closer. That's 13 episodes in a row of the overly-friendly, but-just-a-little-bitchy "Thank You" that Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) delivers so well.

The Thanksgiving marathon is in preparation for a new, two-hour episode that airs December 4th. In it, Brenda is called upon by the CIA to assist in an "off-the-record investigation of a would-be defector found murdered in Los Angeles." Johnson has to find a link between the death of a KGB agent, several CIA agents, a young terror suspect and 20 pounds of missing plutonium. The second hour of that episode, called Serving the King, is directed by star Sedgwick's husband, Kevin Bacon.

Also, following the special, two-hour event, season two of The Closer will air every Tuesday night at 10 pm starting on December 5th.

TV Land airing monster Munsters marathon

by Adam Finley, posted Oct 19th 2006 8:01PM

munsterLately I've been watching a lot of classic monster movies like Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. All of these are great films I recommend highly, though not so much Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. Bela Lugosi as Frankenstein's monster just doesn't do it for me, it's gotta be Boris Karloff or nobody. That is, unless we're talking television, then Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster suits me just fine. Yeah, I know he's not playing Frankenstein's monster, but let's not split corpse hairs, okay? Anyway, TV Land is airing a 25-hour Munsters marathon starting at 6 am on October 28 and running until 6 am on October 29. Those of you with advanced degrees in "time telling" will notice that's only a 24-hour period, but thanks to daylight saving time, they're able to sneak another episode into the marathon. Given the choice, I'd rather have an Addams Family marathon, but this works, too.
