TiVo CEO Tom Rogers talks TiVo HD - VIDEO

by Brad Linder, posted Jul 25th 2007 3:31PM
Marketwatch snagged short interview with TiVo CEO Tom Rogers. Not surprisingly, most of the interview concerns the recently launched TiVo HD. But there are a few other juicy tidbits.

A few takeaway points:
  • Rogers acknowledges that TiVo's lack of an HD box with a consumer-friendly price tag was hurting the company's subscription numbers.
  • Rogers says Comcast customers will be able to get TiVo software on their existing set top boxes starting "quite soon."

Does anyone under 40 watch CBS Sunday Morning ... besides me?

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 7th 2006 5:50PM
Charles Osgood of CBS Sunday MorningAs much as I'd like to wake up at 11:30 AM on Sundays and go straight to a plate of corned-beef hash and eggs, I'm noticing that my body doesn't agree with that view; as I get older, I get up earlier. So, when I flick on the TV at around 9 AM, my choices are limited. More often than not, I chose to watch CBS Sunday Morning, hosted by Charles Osgood.

Why? Because they talk about interesting topics and interview interesting people. And the subjects are not chosen because of their newsworthiness; they're chosen because there is something interesting about their lives that no one seems to explore. For instance, if they decided to interview a newsworthy guy like Brad Pitt, they wouldn't ask him about Jen or Angelina; they'd ask him about his love of architecture. I mean, who even knew that Pitt was an architecture buff?

This interesting article
by Jon Friedman at Marketwatch sheds some light on how the show, which has changed little since its debut in 1979, picks its topics, and how it tries to keep an upbeat tone (not "happy talk," mind you, which is what irritates me about most morning news shows. They just have an optimistic tone to most of their stories).

Aaron Brown: Game Show Host?

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 24th 2006 8:23PM
Aaron BrownIn an interview with Marketwatch media critic Jon Friedman, Aaron Brown talks about how things are going since he was unceremoniously dumped by CNN last fall. He tells Friedman that he's content, teaching journalism at Arizona State and working on his memoirs, but he and his reps are always on the lookout for new projects. Ideally, he'd like to do a talk show that's a hybrid of Charlie Rose and Larry King Live, but his agent is in discussion to do anything... including a gig as a game show host.

Boy, would I love to see that, at least for one episode. Why? Because I'd love to see Brown ruminate over why there have to be winners and losers in life, bringing in references to Buddha and Mark Twain, while the contestant patiently sits and waits for him to ask the next trivia question. It would be unintentional comedy at his finest.
