Human Weapon kicks off July 20
I mentioned Human Weapon briefly back in March. The new series for the History Channel follows Professional fighter and martial expert Jason Chambers and former football player and wrestler Bill Duff as they travel the world to find martial arts experts and fight them. I assume it's a planned fight, I don't think Chambers and Duff will suddenly stop in mid-interview and start punching people, though that would be fun to watch.
Spike honors Bruce Lee this weekend - VIDEO
This Sunday, Spike TV will honor martial arts legend Bruce Lee by broadcasting a few of his movies, not to mention a bit of cross-promotion with GameTrailers.com. Here's the schedule:
- 1:00 p.m.: Game of Death
- 3:00 p.m.: Fist of Fury
- 8:00 p.m.: Enter the Dragon
- 10:30 p.m.: Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story
Enter the Dragon will be presented by Lee's daughter, Shannon Lee, who will share anecdotes about her father and some behind-the-scenes footage. Also, both the GameTrailers and Spike TV sites will feature digital content to coincide with "Bruce Lee Day."
UFC gets syndicated
Good news: your chances of seeing men pound the living crap out of one another on television have just increased. The Ultimate Fighting Championship will be syndicated in late 2007 as UFC Wired, hosted by Joe Rogan, who has already appeared on UFC pay-per-view events and on UFC coverage on Spike TV.
UFC Wired will pit the top UFC champs against one another. This isn't really my cup of tea, but then I've always been missing whatever male gene makes one drink heavily, pick fights, slap puppies and fix tractor engines. Oh why did I have to be born handsome instead of strong?
Anyway, the new series will run for twenty-two episodes, so keep an eye out to see if it plays in your neck o' the woods.
Showtime to air mixed martial arts events
Apparently Showtime has figured out from its boxing coverage that people not only want to see men punching each other, they'd also like to see some kicking, too. Starting in 2007, the cable network will join Pro Elite to showcase mixed martial arts events (judo, jiu-jitsu, karate, wrestling and kickboxing). The new venture, an attempt to cash in on the popularity of other "men beating the living crap out of each other" events like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, will be produced by Douglas DeLuca (The Man Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Mole). I've never been one who enjoys these kind of sports, though I did have a friend who participated in UFC and once won a match by sitting on a man's chest and punching him repeatedly in the face. I guess if you have a talent you might as well use it. The first mixed martial arts competition will air on Showtime February 10th, 2007, with new events airing through 2009.Short-Lived Shows: Raven
Raven was a show that ran on CBS for one season in
1992-93. It concerned Jonathon Raven (that's not a typo - it's "on" not "an"), an ex-spy and martial
arts expert looking for the teen son that vanished after his wife died. With the help of his ex-Special Forces buddy
Herman "Ski" Jablonski, he tracks the son to Hawaii. While looking for him, he helps people who are in
trouble, often using martial arts.OK, I know that description might sound a little lame, but let me describe things a little bit more.
