Martin Scorsese came on 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central) to find a host who was genuinely excited about his latest project. Jon Stewart had seen 'Hugo' the night before, and really enjoyed it. Scorsese was excited to have been able to make a movie his young children could watch.

But by the time he left the show, it was his own childhood Stewart was suddenly fascinated with. Scorsese painted a picture of him being sequestered into one room of an apartment because of health issues. He wasn't allowed to run and play with the other kids, or even laugh, he said. This, Stewart declared, would make a great film.

Given how many years have passed since they formed (54) and how many books, articles and films have been devoted to them since they broke up (approximately twenty gazillion), I feel confident stating that it is now literally impossible to break news about The Beatles. Still, even avid Beatles fans like myself don't know everything there is to know about the Fab Four, which is good news for Martin Scorsese's new documentary, 'George Harrison: Living in the Material World,' whose first part premieres on HBO tonight at 9 ET.

While the film doesn't reach the sublime heights scaled by the director's Bob Dylan movie, 'No Direction Home,' it does paint a moving and nuanced portrait of the guitarist, songwriter and spiritual seeker, who succumbed to lung cancer on November 29, 2001. But you don't care about that: You want the facts! So here they are -- all seven of them.

We all know Emmys night often results in some of our favorite stars palling around together, but have we never could have dreamed up this pairing.

It's been announced that HBO is to air Martin Scorsese's new documentary film, 'George Harrison: Living in the Material World.'

The film follows the life of The Beatles' lead guitarist from his musical beginnings in Liverpool through his life as a musician, a seeker, a philanthropist and a filmmaker.

It weaves together interviews with Harrison and his closest friends, performances, home movies and photographs. Much of the material in the film has never been seen or heard before in public.

In a statement, George Lombardo, President, HBO Programming, said "When Martin Scorsese brings a project to HBO, we all know it is going to be very special, and he has added to that body of work with this monumental film on George Harrison. From rock'n'roll icon to moviemaker, to spiritual seeker and humanitarian, George Harrison was a true renaissance man. This amazing film will illuminate every aspect of Harrison's remarkable, multifaceted life."

There aren't a whole lot of job openings these days for philosophers, public wits and raconteurs. Fran Lebowitz pretty much has the monopoly to herself.

As recorded by no less than director Martin Scorsese in his new HBO documentary 'Public Speaking' (which debuts Nov. 22), Lebowitz is the last of a breed that once included such sparkling conversationalists as Dorothy Parker, Oscar Wilde, Oscar Levant, Jack Paar, Truman Capote, William F. Buckley, James Baldwin and others who could dine out on their witticisms and pontifications.

Though Lebowitz, 60, hasn't published a book of new essays in decades (she famously suffers from a bout of writer's block so durable that she calls it "writer's blockade"), she still makes a living as a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and, as the title of the documentary implies, on the lecture circuit. For her, "public speaking" really just means "talking back," the sort of opining she got punished for as a child, but which now pays for her cigarettes and tailored suits.

['Boardwalk Empire - 'Pilot']

After a couple of Martin Scorsese's trademark tracking shots, which followed Nucky Thompson's exit from the Ritz Hotel and his arrival at Babette's nightclub, we got to the meat of the first episode of 'Boardwalk Empire': Nucky arrived at a dinner party, at which we met Atlantic City's power players and began to understand their relationships and conflicts.

Perhaps it's not surprising that, as the show's sumptuous pilot unfolded and Nucky and company dug into a lavish supper, a food analogy came to mind.

Even though the TCA Summer press tour wrapped up yesterday, I'm still in Beverly Hills awaiting my flight back to the wilds of New Jersey. But before I leave, I wanted to talk about HBO's presentation that concluded the tour, mainly for who was there... and who might be there in 2011.

HBO always presents their part of the tour like a broadcast network would, with an executive session and star-studded panels. And, while this summer's lineup had some pretty good star power, I can only imagine what next winter's panels are going to look like. Why? Because HBO showed clips of David Milch's 'Luck,' starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte, the dark 'Mildred Pierce' miniseries starring Kate Winslet, and a fifteen-second clip of 'Game of Thrones,' which lit up Twitter feeds everywhere.

Oh, and we might also see Bruce Springsteen, as there's a documentary in the works about the making of The Boss' classic 1978 album 'Darkness on the Edge of Town.'

This time around, HBO had Spike Lee, whom I talked to during a roundtable earlier in the day about 'If God Is Willing And Da Creek Don't Rise,' and Tracy Morgan, promoting his fall comedy special.

But the highlights of the afternoon were the panels for the much-anticipated Martin Scorsese production 'Boardwalk Empire,' and the wonderfully wacky Carrie Fisher, promoting a documentary of her one-woman show 'Wishful Drinking.'

As if we weren't already ridiculously excited about Martin Scorsese's upcoming HBO mobster period drama 'Boardwalk Empire,' now the Oscar-winning director is teaming with Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger to develop an HBO drama that's being described as the history of rock 'n' roll.

Deadline.com reports that Scorsese, Jagger and Emmy-winning 'Sopranos' writer and 'Boardwalk Empire' creator Terence Winter are set to bring 'History of Music' (the project's working title) to HBO as a series, after the story originated as a big-screen movie idea at Disney and Paramount.

In their classic song 'Under the Boardwalk,' the Drifters crooned that "from the park you hear the happy sound of a carousel. You can almost taste the hot dogs and French fries they sell." But if Martin Scorsese has anything to say about it, the boardwalk is about to be singing a very different tune -- one involving the sound of gunfire and the taste of blood.

Yes, the television event of the year has finally been announced: as multiple outlets, including Deadline, are reporting, HBO has revealed that Scorsese's upcoming period drama 'Boardwalk Empire' will debut on Sunday, September 19 at 9PM.

No, the series isn't about the most ruthless game of Monopoly ever played, at least not literally. But like the board game, 'Boardwalk Empire,' which was adapted by 'The Sopranos' writer Terence Winter from the book 'Boardwalk Empire: the Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City,' is set prohibition era Atlantic City. Unlike Monopoly, however, this version has a violent pilot directed by the legendary Scorsese, which is the Hollywood equivalent of landing on Community Chest and drawing a Get Out of Jail Free card.

Mad Men, Best Television Series - Drama. With competition from Big Love, Dexter, House, and True Blood, I'm really glad I wasn't picking the winner here. They're all fantastic. I wouldn't say that True Blood delivered its best episodes last season, so I don't have a problem with that one not winning (though I'm a big fan of the show). Mad Men is definitely deserving (especially the "lawn mower" episode), although Dexter and Big Love both had great seasons.

It's got 1920s classic cars, men with big guns and a nattily-dressed, slightly-mustachioed Steve Buscemi brandishing a cigarette. It's looks just like a scene right out of a gangster movie.

And then you see that it's HBO's just-released trailer for its upcoming new series 'Boardwalk Empire.' Produced by Emmy-winning 'Sopranos' writer Terence Winter AND Martin Scorsese, you know that this show is not just going to be gangster: It's going to be all-out, balls-to-the-wall, bloody gangsta.

It's a glamorous and glittering list that just added distinctly more shimmer: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Halle Berry, Colin Farrell and Matthew Fox will be among the presenters at the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards.

The honors from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which some consider a precursor to the Oscars, will be broadcast live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sun., Jan. 17, 8PM ET. This year's telecast will also air live on the West Coast, beginning at 5PM.

Berry, Farrell and Fox join the previously announced Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Mickey Rourke on the growing roster of award presenters. In addition (and as also previously announced), the coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement will be presented by Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio to Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese.

Gretchen Mol, who was last seen in last season's short-lived American television version of Life on Mars and in the feature An American Affair, will be going to HBO for the series Boardwalk Empire. She's scheduled to have a recurring role as a showgirl. The series is being produced by Martin Scorsese.

Gretchen Mol was on Life on Mars with Michael Imperioli, who was also on The Sopranos on HBO and was in Scorsese's Goodfellas. Boardwalk Empire star Steve Buscemi also appeared on The Sopranos. In short, all these people know each other and it's definitely a case of cast inbreeding. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Seriously, Gretchen Mol is a terrific actress and was fantastic in The Notorious Bettie Page. Given the talent already behind Boardwalk Empire, it was likely to be a fantastic series. Now its volume just went up to 11.
