Matt Damon Based His 'True Grit' Role on Tommy Lee Jones (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 30th 2010 1:22PM
Matt Damon, 'The Early Show'In the movie 'True Grit,' Matt Damon's character may ring as oddly familiar to some movie fans. But it's not Glen Campbell, who played the same character in the original 'True Grit' film adaptation.

When the actor appeared on 'The Early Show' (Weekdays, 7AM on CBS), he revealed that he'd based many of the mannerisms of Texas Ranger La Boeuf on fellow actor Tommy Lee Jones.

"I did a movie in '94 that Tommy Lee Jones directed," Damon said. "And I said, 'Well, what if the guy was similar to Tommy Lee but, unlike Tommy, didn't really have anything worth saying. He's all style and no substance.'"

Matt Damon and David Letterman Talk With Hair-Ties on Their Tongues (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 17th 2010 3:05AM
Matt Damon and David Letterman Talk With Hair-Ties on Their TonguesIn the new Western 'True Grit,' Matt Damon's character gets injured while being dragged behind a horse, and nearly bites off his tongue. So, Matt needed to find a way to imitate the sound of a speech impediment. "So I thought, well, what if I wrapped -- like -- a pony tail around my tongue," he said.

Which is a bit of a mental leap, but okay. And for the record, by "pony tail," he's referring to a hair-tie, or a "scrunchie" -- not anything to do with actual horses. On the 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), Damon invited David Letterman to join him in the unique practice of talking with a hair-tie on your tongue. "I brought one for you," he said. "Did you bring two? Or just the one?" the host asked.

"Just the one ... it's got lint on it," Matt replied, reaching into his pocket. (That's not very sanitary, Matt!)

Ben Affleck Talks Best Actor Competition Against Matt Damon (VIDEO)

Ben Affleck Talks Awards Competition on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'When Ben Affleck visited 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (weeknights, 12:05AM ET on ABC), Jimmy Kimmel happily showed the studio audience a little competition that's going on in the pages of 'Variety' magazine between Affleck and his BFF Matt Damon.

Holding up an issue of the entertainment industry publication, he pointed to one of those "For Your Consideration" ads that inundate the season, as industry voters consider who to nominate for Oscars, among other awards. The cover ad promoted Affleck as Best Actor for his role in 'The Town.' However, the inside cover page revealed a Best Actor ad for Damon's role in 'Hereafter.'

Affleck laughed and said, "Those pictures look a little strangely meditative." Kimmel agreed, joking, "It looks like you guys are waiting for the call at five o'clock in the morning to see if you're nominated." The host needled him further, trying to get Affleck to admit to competitive tension between the two friends.

Matt Damon Talks Ben Affleck's Success, Impersonates Matthew McConaughey (VIDEO)

Matt Damon Talks Ben Affleck on 'Late Show'When Matt Damon visited the 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), he talked more about other famous actors than himself. David Letterman asked him about buddy Ben Affleck's recent success with 'The Town.' "I'm thrilled for the guy. I'm not at all surprised," said Damon. "Now I'm kinda relegated to emailing him, asking him for jobs," he joked.

Before the film premiered, Damon asked Affleck if he was nervous. Affleck told him: "I wrote it, and I directed it, and I starred in it, so you know I can't really distance myself from it if it stinks. I'm kinda on the hook for this one." The host then persuaded Damon to do his "specialty impression" of Matthew McConaughey.

A ton of celebrities were in attendance, including Jimmy Kimmel, Robin Williams, Ben Affleck and Clint Eastwood.

One celebrity who couldn't be bothered to show up: George Clooney. Although Clooney did send a video message to Damon. Unfortunately, the message ostensibly took place while George was getting an "elective prostate [exam]" from a doctor.

Clooney appeared a little distracted while sending his message, but -- hey, at least he cared enough to call. "Tonight, you have an American Cinematheque Award," he said to Matt. " ... Ooh! Aaah!" These weren't necessarily sounds of excitement; they were more like noises resulting from the doctor's activities.

Does Matt Damon have something about lips?

Damon was on 'The Early Show' (weekdays, 7AM ET on CBS) plugging his upcoming film 'Green Zone' and chatting with Harry Smith about some upcoming projects. "What's with the mustache," Smith asked him. "I'm going into porn," Damon responded. "It's really the only place left. But I'm going into '80s porn." Actually, he was growing a mustache for his upcoming stint on the Coen Brothers' remake of 'True Grit.' Later, Smith asked him about the rumors that he was going to play Liberace's young lover with Michael Douglas as Liberace. "Yes," Damon responded.
