NYTVF: TV Criticism on the Web
I sometimes look around the internet and am amazed by the sheer volume of content. People can write about almost anything -- especially when they're obsessed with a specific topic. And a lot of people seem to be specifically obsessed with television. Not that I can judge. I'm TV addict who writes for TV Squad. But I sometimes wonder if it all really matters. Is anyone listening to any of us? And more importantly, do we have any influence on the television world at large with our opinions and criticisms?
As a devoted TV addict, I headed out last week to cover the New York Television Festival (NYTVF) and listened in on a panel discussion which looked at the explosion of blogs and TV fan sites and questioned their impact (if any) on the industry.

24 "peaked too early?"
TV Guide's Matt Roush thinks that by having a nuclear bomb explode during the riveting first four hours of this season's 24, the counter-terrorism drama may have set itself up for failure by "peaking too early."
Despite a few moments of true excitement this season -- the return and the subsequent stabbing of President Logan, the assassination attempt on President Palmer II and the apprehension of terrorist Abu Fayed in grisly Jack Bauer fashion -- there has been almost non-stop griping about how this season hasn't been up to par.
TV Guide critic writing 24's obituary?
TV Guide critic Matt Roush said he's been receiving a lot of complaints from fans of 24 wondering what in the heck has happened to their favorite drama this season.
Between wasting the fabulously compelling return of the Logans -- Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart -- and the recently cutback on the number of scenes containing the fair-haired American hero Jack Bauer, Roush said he must concur with many fans' assessment that, 16 hours into this season, it's not looking too good.
What does 24 need to do in the remaining eight hours left in season six to redeem itself? Roush says, "A change of scenery, a change of personnel, something, anything to rouse 24 from the dead-end torpor it has found itself in this season."

TV Guide goes blog ... wonder where they got that idea?
I don't know if you folks have noticed, but it looks
like TVGuide.com is slowly starting to blogify. A few weeks ago, the site converted its Watercooler column into a blog format,
covering more shows than they did when it was just a standard online column. Now I see that they've
pretty much converted most of their features into blog format, under an umbrella called Expert Blogs. This includes the
Televisionary, FlickChick, Matt Roush's Q&A, and The Ausiello Report. All blogs allow people to comment.Gee... that format sounds a bit familiar, doesn't it? Wonder where they got that idea from?
I kid, I kid... I only joke out of love. Actually, this is not a big surprise, since Ausiello mentioned this to me in an interview I did with him last month. The format does seem like it might be a bit unwieldy in some cases (like the Q&A columns like Televisionary), but I'm sure they'll work out the kinks at some point.

- In the print edition: a parent's guide to the best TV for kids, a preview of What About Brian?, your questions answered about The Amazing Race, and a look at the singers and musicians that this season's American Idol finalists have in their families.
Everything you need to know about NCIS: TV Guide in 60 seconds
On the cover:
NCIS, the show no one you know watches. - Matt Roush on the season premieres of 24 and The Shield.
- In the print edition only: an interview with Heather Graham of Emily's Reason's Why Not, a behind the scenes look of Wolfgang Puck's new Las Vegas restaurant, and a Q and A with Boston Legal's Julie Bowen.
- An interview with John Stamos about the return of Jake In Progress and why he really didn't want to join the cast of ER.
Which TV Critic Q&A do you like more?
Every week, two of the most prominent TV critics in the country
answer questions from their loyal readers, but they do things a little differently. Matt Roush of TV Guide
(pictured) takes questions that are e-mailed to him and answers them in a pre-written column twice a week, while Robert Bianco of USA
Today conducts an online chat once a week (usually Mondays, but he did a chat today because of the holiday). They're fairly similar critics, in both writing style and in likes and dislikes. Bianco seems to be more of a "nose in the air" critic than Roush -- for instance, he was one of the only major critics to express his extreme distaste for Everybody Loves Raymond -- but they both seem to take all queries seriously, and only gently kid readers who can't let go of a particular show, or who like a show that said critic can't stomach.
