TV's Greatest Rivalries: 'Survivor,' 'Dynasty,' 'True Blood' & More

by Maggie Furlong & Jean Bentley, posted Jun 22nd 2011 9:00AM
We used to watch 'The Real World' and 'Road Rules' religiously, and then MTV combined those powerfully awesome forces to create 'The Challenge.'

Well now we're old(er) and we're still inexplicably excited for their latest fight-to-the-death challenge, the series' 11th incarnation, 'The Challenge: Rivals' (premieres Wed., June 22, 10PM ET on MTV).

The Challenge: Rivals

Of course, looking through their slideshow of supposedly epic rivalries, only a few familiar faces from the old days truly stand out: Wes and Kenny, Adam and CT, Johnny and Tyler, Nehemiah and Evan, Paula and Evelyn and even Robin and Aneesa. We're not saying the rest of the eight teams battling it out aren't vicious (we know better than that), they're just not sparking any vivid memories.

So we thought we'd remind TV lovers what a true battle royale looks like -- here, our list of TV's Greatest Rivalries.

CW Renews 'One Tree Hill,' 'Life Unexpected'; 'Melrose Place' Canceled

by Andrew Scott, posted May 18th 2010 1:55PM
One Tree HillIt looks like 'One Tree Hill' will live on for another season

According to the Live Feed, the CW gave the longrunning series a surprise renewal order today, while also picking up the low-rated freshman dramedy 'Life Unexpected.'

This will mark 'One Tree Hill's' eighth season on the air.

Meanwhile, the CW also made room for two newbie series. First up is 'Nikita,' starring Maggie Q as a rogue assassin.

Also getting picked up today: 'Hellcats,' a new series about a competitive cheerleading squad at a Southern university. Ashley Tisdale of 'High School Musical' fame stars alongside singer-actress Aly Michalka.

And now for the bad news: The CW has decided not to renew its 'Melrose Place' reboot for a second season, according to Variety. 'Merlose' is the network's only scripted series not returning next season.

Apparently, Heather Locklear can't save everything.

Fox and CW Shows On the Bubble

by Allison Waldman, posted May 4th 2010 4:03PM

When considering the future of some shows on Fox and the CW, in the case of the former, there are only a couple of programs on the fence. Fox, overall, has had a strong year highlighted by the success of 'Glee,' which trumps nearly any disappointment execs might have over already cancelled shows like 'Sons of Tucson' or 'Past Life.'

On the other hand, the CW has a few hours teetering on the brink amid some solid, if not spectacular, already renewed shows like 'Vampire Diaries' and 'Supernatural.' To check the threat assessment for the Fox and CW programs on the bubble, read on:

Alyssa Milano Is 'Romantically Challenged'

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 30th 2010 8:05PM
Alyssa MilanoNo, that's not an assumption on the actress' amorous ways, although I'm willing to put that assumption to the test if she's particularly irked by it.

The 'Who's the Boss,' 'Charmed' and 'Melrose Place' star has landed a new sitcom on ABC that can easily earn some steam since it's airing after 'Dancing with the Stars.'

'Romantically Challenged,' a sitcom about a recent divorcee looking for signs of life after marriage, will start airing on Monday, April 12 after 'DWTS.' The show is created by former 'Family Guy' writer Ricky Blitt and James Burrows has been tapped to direct it.

It sounds ridiculously simple and run-of-the-mill in terms of creativity, but sometimes the simplest ideas have the potential to catch fire. Does the show have the potential to be hot or will it go up in flames?

Dr. Mancini Slugs His Son on 'Melrose Place' (VIDEO)

Melrose Place, Dr. Mancini"He's not your son, Dad, he's mine." If you can wrap your head around that sentence, then you're probably loving 'Melrose Place' (Tue., 9PM ET on The CW).

"You will never get close to my child," said Dr. Mancini (to his son). "You will not talk to him. You will not write to him. As far as he's concerned, you don't exist." Uh, excuse us, Doc, but in case you weren't listening, you're not the kid's dad. Or who knows, maybe you are.

Then they proceed to have more words and a knock-down drag-out fight with shattered glass and all! Awesome.

Melrose PlaceIf you're going to drug a girl and leave her for dead, you best expect some consequences, dude. Like ending up in the hospital with multiple contusions. Take a hint from the folks at 'Melrose Place' (Tue., 9PM ET on The CW).

And what's worse is when the person you called a whore ends up being your doc. That "do no harm" thing? Not gonna happen, buddy. Even if what you said is true.

TV Show Promos That Are Better Than the Shows

by Daynah Burnett, posted Dec 7th 2009 2:00PM
If a show's promo ad looks good, you can reasonably expect the show to be equally awesome. Sounds fair enough, right?

Unfortunately, we've noticed that even the most unwatchable television with the most boring characters can manage to look great in 30-second snippets.

So, in honor of tonight's 'Gossip Girl' episode (oh, please. like Serena's actually going to die in a car crash), we've compiled a list of TV's worst shows with the best promos.

'Gossip Girl'
Having slunk its way down to pure unadulterated camp, it's surprising that Chuck and Blair haven't begun winking and nodding at the camera by now. Even more surprising is how their clever 'WTF' promo campaign is actually more entertaining than the show itself. OMG, indeed.
