Joy Behar Crowned New Miss America Judge on 'The View' (VIDEO)
by Nick Zaino, posted Dec 8th 2010 4:30PM
Miss America Caressa Cameron stopped by 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) to talk about the new pageant in January -- but she didn't come empty handed. No, Cameron came to announce 'View' co-host Joy Behar would be a judge in the next competition, plus she presented Behar with a crown of her very own. But, does judging Miss America conflict with Behar's feminist ideals?
"My daughter said to me, 'You call yourself a feminist judging Miss America contest?" Behar said. "I said, 'Is it a beauty contest?' Because I thought maybe it was a job in Washington at first."
Cameron was quick to correct Behar on calling the competition a "beauty contest," but that didn't stop Behar from making this quick quip: "I will be looking for the one girl who has cellulite, I'm just warning you."
Brooke Burke, Chris Harrison to Host Miss America Pageant on ABC
by Jean Bentley, posted Oct 26th 2010 3:35PM
After a five-year foray into basic cable, Miss America is returning to ABC in 2011. To welcome the pageant back to its original home -- the first televised Miss America competition aired on ABC in 1954 -- ABC has tapped its own 'Dancing With the Stars' personality Brooke Burke to host the pageant alongside 'The Bachelor' guru Chris Harrison.By hiring two of its most popular hosts from its two most popular reality show franchises, ABC is probably hoping to breathe life into the aging beauty. After suffering declining ratings, Miss America moved from broadcast to cable, from Atlantic City to Las Vegas, then from CMT to TLC before winding up back at ABC.
'Miss America' Returning to ABC
by Andrew Scott, posted May 24th 2010 4:50PM
'Miss America' has booked a three-year deal with ABC that will bring the beauty pageant back to network television for the first time since 2004.According to the AP, ABC plans to air next year's competition live on Jan. 15.
The news should come as a sigh of relief to fans of the longrunning pageant, which was dropped by TLC in March, despite a relatively decent performance in the ratings.
'Miss America' has shuffled across numerous channels over the years, including NBC, CBS and CMT.
This is just the latest pageant renewal in recent months. In March, NBC signed a three-year deal with the Miss Universe Organization to continue broadcasting the 'Miss Universe' and 'Miss USA' pageants.
'Miss America' will celebrate its 90th anniversary in January.
NBC Signs 3-Year Nuptials With 'Miss Universe,' 'Miss USA'
by Harley W. Lond, posted Mar 9th 2010 12:11AM
NBC is fond of 'Miss Universe' and 'Miss USA': The network has struck a new three-year deal with the Miss Universe Organization and Donald Trump to continue to broadcast the pageants, beginning in 2011, according to a report in Entertainment Weekly.Last year's 'Miss USA' averaged around 5 million viewers, a record low for the pageant, but scored high on the buzz meter because of Carrie Prejean (Miss California) and her comments on gay marriage. The 2009 'Miss Universe' contest pulled in 5.9 million viewers, an improvement over previous outings.

Once again, Miss America is without a home. The Wrap is reporting that cable network TLC has decided not to renew its deal with the 89-year-old pageant.
"This year we delivered record ratings, besting any of it's prior performances on cable. However, our three year deal has concluded and we have chosen not to renew. We wish the Miss America Organization well," TLC said in a statement, according to the Wrap.
'Sex and the City' Creator Plans Anita Bryant Biopic
by Gary Susman, posted Feb 2nd 2010 1:15PM
In 1977, as now, gay rights initiatives were a contentious issue on many state ballots, and entertainers often drew harsh criticism for taking political stances. So it's no wonder HBO thinks the time is right for a biopic about Anita Bryant.According to the Hollywood Reporter, the cable channel is developing a movie about the singer-turned-activist. 'Sex and the City' creator Darren Star is directing and co-producing the film, whose writer is Chad Hodge (best known for the CW's fugitive-family drama series 'Runaway,' whose pilot Star produced).
'Sex and the City' Director to Take on Anita Bryant
by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 2nd 2010 10:27AM
Today, many people have no idea who Anita Bryant is. The Miss America contestant turned professional singer and commercial spokesperson turned anti-gay celebrity activist was a firebrand to a controversy that raged in the 1980s, but for entire generation -- maybe more -- she's unknown. Darren Star, creator of 'Sex and the City' will change that. The upcoming HBO movie planned to tell the Anita Bryant story should be fascinating. 'Sex and the City's' Darren Star will direct the Bryant biopic and Chad Hodge is writing the script.
HBO has a track record for doing this type of real life docudrama very well, including the classic 'The Late Shift' which depicted David Letterman's exit from NBC and Jay Leno's seizing 'The Tonight Show.' More recently, 'Recount' told the story of the 2000 presidential election when Florida was thrust into the limelight because of voting irregularities.

The 'Miss America Pageant' (Sat., 8PM ET on TLC) added some new twists on the festivities this year. One of those occurred when the remaining 39 contestants voted for the 15th finalist -- Miss Oregon, C.C. Barber. She was so cute and excited as she said, "I am so honored right now!" By the end of the night, Miss Virginia -- 22-year-old Caressa Cameron -- was crowned Miss America 2010.

Once proud Miss America pageant survives on cable
by John Scott Lewinski, posted Jan 12th 2010 5:01PM
Remember when the Miss America Pageant was a major event on the national television candle? The folks at TLC want it to be that kind of show again. If you were born anywhere around the late 80s, you probably don't. But, throughout the 50s into the 80s, the annual televised event was more than just entertainment. It was news. And the winner, whether it was Lee Meriweather, Phyllis George or Vanessa Williams, had a shot at becoming a major celebrity.
But now? Name the current Miss America. Quickly. Don't look it up. Name last year's winner. Name any of the last five. Case closed. While it was once a proud contest/variety show, Miss America show is now overshadowed by other "rags to riches" battles like American Idol, America's Got Talent, etc. To get Miss America back on the pop culture map, the show's producers are mixing up the judges with a surreal mix of faces from through the media.
Mario Lopez to Host Miss America 2010

From AC to emcee! The 'Extra' TV host formerly known as Slater on 'Saved by the Bell' will be master of ceremonies at the live Miss America pageant on Jan. 30. Lopez is no stranger to the competition, having hosted in 2007 and 2009. (And perhaps his experience on 'Dancing With the Stars' will help his commentary on the talent competition?)
Held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, the pageant pits 53 contestants against each other as they compete in interview, swimsuit, evening wear, and talent competitions for the crown. Past hosts include James Denton from 'Desperate Housewives' and comedian Wayne Brady.
