Miss Angola, Leila Lopes, Crowned Miss Universe 2011 (VIDEO)
by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 13th 2011 3:24AM
Contestants from 89 nations around the globe came together for 'The 2011 Miss Universe Pageant' (Mon., 9PM ET on NBC), but there could be only one winner. Miss Angola, Leila Lopes, came as a bit of a surprise to the announcers throughout the competition. When asked if she could change any physical characteristic, what she would change, Lopes responded, "Thank God, I am very well satisfied with the way that God created me and I wouldn't change a thing."
The answer struck just the right chord of humility, self-confidence and satisfaction with her natural beauty with the judges. Chosen from 89 contestants, Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011, receiving her crown from the outgoing Miss Universe, Mexico's Ximena Navarrete.
The Swimsuit Competition - and the Winner of 'Miss Universe 2010' (VIDEO)
by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 24th 2010 4:47AM
It's time for 'The 2010 'Miss Universe Pageant' (Mon., 9PM ET on NBC). But who will be the winner? Oddsmakers predicted that Miss Ireland would walk away with the crown: but would that actually happen? But before we even get to the winner, let's deal with the only reason that most people watch this show: the swimsuit competition! It's a little pointless for us to describe the swimsuit section of the show, but if you continue on to the next part of the article, then you can watch a video of the hottest women in the world dancing around in bikinis. So; there's that.
'Minute to Win It' - Beauty Queens Eat Cookies Without Using Their Hands (VIDEO)
by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 24th 2010 12:46AM
You might not think that Oreo cookies could be sexy. But then, you may not have watched the latest episode of 'Minute to Win It' (Mon., 8PM ET on NBC). A group of former Miss USA and Miss Universe winners appeared on the game show, and one of their challenges was to eat an Oreo -- without using their hands. The cookie was placed on top of the women's eyes ... and then they had to move it down to their mouths. So they winked, twitched, and wiggled in order to win the contest. Cookie-eating has seldom seemed so alluring before. The former Miss Puerto Rico got the cookie in her mouth first -- she attributed her victory to a lack of Botox, which made her face more flexible. Good to know!
NBC Signs 3-Year Nuptials With 'Miss Universe,' 'Miss USA'
by Harley W. Lond, posted Mar 9th 2010 12:11AM
NBC is fond of 'Miss Universe' and 'Miss USA': The network has struck a new three-year deal with the Miss Universe Organization and Donald Trump to continue to broadcast the pageants, beginning in 2011, according to a report in Entertainment Weekly.Last year's 'Miss USA' averaged around 5 million viewers, a record low for the pageant, but scored high on the buzz meter because of Carrie Prejean (Miss California) and her comments on gay marriage. The 2009 'Miss Universe' contest pulled in 5.9 million viewers, an improvement over previous outings.
Miss Universe 2009 Winner Is Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez
by Andrew Scott, posted Aug 24th 2009 11:00AM
For the second straight year, Venezuela has won the Miss Universe crown. This year, it went to 18-year-old Stefania Fernandez, who survived -- among other things -- a swimsuit competition, a question-and-answer segment (she was asked what women can to do overcome obstacles in achieving their goals) and a "live" performance by 'Hills' star Heidi Montag to win the title.
First runner-up was Ada Aimee de la Cruz of the Dominican Republic. Kosovo's Gona Dragusha was named second runner-up, with Rachael Finch and Mayra Matos of Australia and Puerto Rico rounding out the top five.

Judges announced for the Miss Universe Pageant
by Kristin Sample, posted Jul 7th 2008 7:03PM
NBC Universal, Donald Trump and Paula Shugart (president of the Miss Universe Organization) announced the celerbrity panel of judges today for the Miss Universe Pageant, which will be broadcast live from Vietnam this Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET on NBC and Telemundo.. Donald Trump, Jr., Roberto Cavalli, Nadine Velazquez, Jennifer Hawkins, Louis Licari, John Nguyen will judge the competition. So where are the celebrities? At least Nadine Velazquez is on My Name is Earl. I guess you could argue that Don, Jr. is on The Apprentice but I'd hardly classify him as a celebrity. I'm not saying that some of these judges aren't successful in their fields. Cavalli is an international designer. Licari is a colorist to the stars (I guess he'll be checking the girls for bad roots). John Nguyen is a successful entrepreneur. Jennifer Hawkins won the pageant in 2004. But, as far as Hawkins goes, it's like having Taylor Hicks be a guest mentor on Idol. Lame-O. At least they have real celebrities as hosts. Jerry Springer and Mel B. will led the ceremonies.
Springer and a Spice Girl to host the Miss Universe pageant
by Kristin Sample, posted Jun 25th 2008 7:05PM
Jerry Springer and Mel B will host the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant live from Vietnam. Both Springer and the former "Scary Spice" are excited about the pageant. Mel B, former contestant on Dancing with the Stars, exclaims, "I'm thrilled to be a co-host of the Miss Universe Pageant. I believe the diversity and dedication that the pageant brings inspires and empowers young women across the globe." Springer, host of the hit summer show America's Got Talent, is also happy to take on the hosting duties. He says, ""This is obviously a great honor and getting to work alongside Mel B makes it even better."The competition will feature contestants from eighty countries. Each pageant hopeful will be judged on three categories: swimsuit (the eye-candy category), evening gown (the shameless endorsement category) , and interview (the "We swear, we didn't just want to see them in swimsuits." category). Last year's winner Riyo Mori of Japan will be on hand to crown this year's Miss Universe.
The Miss Universe Pageant will air on July 13th at 9:00 p.m. ET on NBC (and simulcast on Telemundo).

Project Runway: Miss USA
by Annie Wu, posted Jul 20th 2006 7:23AM
(S03E02) The absolutely stunning special guest Miss USA, Tara Conner, asked the designers to create a dress for her Miss Universe appearance. Her only requests: yes to earth-tones, no to white, backless is a plus. What an amazing opportunity! Especially this early in the game. All fourteen designers presented sketches to Tara, but she chose only seven to be created. The seven chosen designers had to pick teammates. Angela was incredibly annoying because she kept bugging at Kayne to pick her. Everyone in the room heard her, so she ended up being chosen last... by Vincent (and she had to correct him when he called her "Alison"... Insult to injury, yeah?).TV Squad Hot Topics
