Maggie Gyllenhaal on Losing an Oscar, Dancing With Madonna (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 1st 2010 1:10AM
Maggie Gyllenhaal on Losing an Oscar, Dancing With MadonnaActress Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared on 'The Graham Norton Show' (Sat., 10PM ET on BCC America). There, she discussed a (sort of) tragic loss, but also told the story of an unexpected benefit.

Maggie failed to win an Oscar award for Best Supporting Actress. She lost to eventual winner Mo'Nique. But she told host Graham Norton that she didn't think she would actually win, since her nomination was for the indie movie 'Crazy Heart.'

Though she did confess to a second or two of excitement: "When you're there... and they're opening the envelope and they say 'Mon-nnnique.' And that's a little like 'Maggie!'" Still, things didn't work out. Oh well. But Maggie didn't let her loss get to her.

'Saturday Night Live' Doesn't Think Gabourey Sidibe Is Too Fat

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 1st 2010 8:02PM
Gabourey SidibeIt's interesting that in E! Online's announcement about 'Precious' star Gabourey Sidibe being asked to host an upcoming episode of 'Saturday Night Live,' their writer referenced a couple of disrespectful quotes Howard Stern had made about Sidibe in early March. Stern makes a living by saying things that push the envelope of good taste, but these words seem to have resonated a bit more than usual.

"There's the most enormous, fat black chick I've ever seen," he said. "She is enormous. Everyone's pretending she's a part of show business and she's never going to be in another movie." He even took on Oprah Winfrey, who's certainly no stranger to weight struggles or lasting success. "Oprah's another liar, a filthy liar. She's telling an enormous woman the size of a planet that she's going to have a career."

Lee Daniels Talks About Using Mariah Carey to Raise Money for 'Precious' (VIDEO)

Lee Daniels Talks About Using Mariah Carey for MoneyThe movie 'Precious' was a surprise hit this past year, being nominated for and winning a host of year-end awards, as well as earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for star Mo'Nique.

On 'The Wendy Williams Show' (weekdays, syndicated), Lee Daniels -- the director of 'Precious' -- revealed his secret for raising money to make the film. Whenever funding was running short, he would have Mariah Carey come over to his house and sing for potential investors. And, according to Daniels, he asked her to make sure to "show your ta-tas ... with diamonds." Good to know.

Oscar Winners Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Mo'Nique, Sandra Bullock on 'Oprah' (VIDEO)

by Harley W. Lond, posted Mar 8th 2010 7:04PM
Academy Award actor and actress winners chatted about their Oscar ceremony experiences with Oprah Winfrey on Monday's 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' (weekdays, syndicated).

Best Supporting Actor Christoph Waltz admitted to Winfrey that he was "more nervous than ever before. Because it is the Academy Awards. I blanked out completely. I hardly recognized my name." The he told Winfrey that his 5-year-old daughter has been dressing his awards, making little installations with them. "She's really gonna enjoy dressing this guy," Winfrey said.

Winfrey asked Best Actor Jeff Bridges what the past 12 hours was like. "Like a kid's magic slate," he said. "Whoosh." Then he went to on to talk about his parents presence, which he has alluded to at several awards shows. "I felt my folks," he said. "They were all over the place."

Best Supporting Actress Mo'Nique's homage to the great actress Hattie McDaniel (the first black woman to get a Best Supporting Actress nod, for 'Gone With the Wind' in 1939) went a little beyond the ordinary. "Last night was really special cause I could hear her whispering in my ear," Mo'Nique said. And on Sunday, while she was going through hair and makeup, there was a knock at her door, and someone delivered a flower and a letter from someone who was a friend with McDaniel's family. Coincidence?

And, finally, Winfrey brought up the by-now-famous Sandra Bullock-Meryl Streep buss that Best Actress winner Bullock mentioned on stage Sunday night. "We have a thing," Bullock quipped. Actually, Bullock said, "you just feel in this business that they pit women against each other ... and I'm so tired of it ... and i said, 'how do we defuse this?' I'm gonna kiss her."

Barbara Walters Special, Mo'nique"Whatever floats your boat" probably applies to Oscar winner Mo'nique, who told Barbara Walters on 'The Barbara Walters Special' (Sun., 7PM ET on ABC) a few tidbits about her personal life.

For one thing, she and husband Sydney Hicks have an open marriage. While she's never had sex outside of the marriage, she said it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

The other personal TMI tidbit we learned is that Mo'nique never shaves her legs -- and she showed us the legs to prove it.

Zach Galifianakis on 'Saturday Night Live': Clip Highlights (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 7th 2010 11:19AM
Saturday Night Live, Zach GalifianakisZach Galifianakis is super hot right now, and he supplied some comedy relief as host of 'Saturday Night Live' this week. He's ridiculously funny, just by showing up. In fact, some of his funniest bits on the show involved hanging out in the background of various TV shows like 'Law & Order,' '30 Rock,' and 'The Dr. Oz Show.'

The kissing family also made an appearance (at a funeral, no less), and one of our favorite talk shows, 'What Up With That?,' was back with actor Paul Rudd, as well as the always ignored Lindsey Buckingham.

Mo'Nique Dishes on Open Marriage to Actor Sidney Hicks (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 5th 2010 2:00PM
During a sneak peek of Barbara Walters' Oscar special on 'Good Morning America' (weekdays, 7AM ET on ABC), Academy Award nominee Mo'Nique revealed that she has an open marriage with husband Sidney Hicks. Mo'Nique went on to explain that sex outside of her marriage is fine and doesn't pose a threat to her relationship with her husband.

"That's not a deal breaker ... That's not something that would make us say, 'Pack your things and let's end the marriage,'" said Mo'Nique. The star of 'Precious' did point out, however, that she hasn't yet had an extramarital affair.

'Precious' Wins Big at 'NAACP Image Awards' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 1st 2010 3:08AM
NAACP Image Awards, Precious, Gabourey SidibeIt's wonderful to see an important film like 'Precious' get the accolades it deserves. The film swept the 'NAACP Image Awards' (Fri., 8PM ET on Fox), taking home trophies for outstanding motion picture, independent motion picture, actress, and supporting actress.

We loved Gabourey Sidibe's tearful acceptance speech. "I didn't really expect this," she said. "I just want to thank my God for ordering my steps, for everything that my life was, and everything that it is now."

It was also funnily poignant when director Lee Daniels proclaimed, "God is good," and the audience shot back, "All the time!"

In the Late Night Wars, Where Are the Women?

by Gary Susman, posted Jan 21st 2010 2:00PM
PeahenIn 2004, NBC took a look at the aging Jay Leno and decided that late night's future was... another middle-aged white guy from Boston.

What if NBC had done something truly groundbreaking and given 'The Tonight Show' to a woman -- perhaps turning the proud Peacock logo into a female Peahen (as seen to the right)? Would the Great Late Night War of 2010 even happened?

The late-night field has been a notorious boys' club for decades (a situation underlined in recent months by the David Letterman scandal and the battle between Leno and Conan O'Brien over 'Tonight'). Now that women late-night hosts such as Wanda Sykes, Chelsea Handler and Mo'Nique are flourishing off the network weeknight grid, doesn't it seem like NBC could have avoided its current late-night disaster if it had decided, back in the day, to groom a woman for the job?

by Donald Deane, posted Dec 22nd 2009 12:05PM
Sherri Shepherd appeared on 'The Mo'Nique Show' still riding high on 'The View's' Daytime Emmy win last August for "Best Talk Show Host." But, according to Shepherd, her reaction to winning the award was less-than-dignified.

"I was in Miami, and I didn't even go because we didn't think we were going to win," Shepherd said. "So, when they opened up the envelope and they were like, 'The winner is 'The View,'' I was sitting there in my pajamas ... I got up ... I screamed. I peed on myself."

'Lopez Tonight' Premiere Earns 3.2 Million Viewers

by Rebecca Paiement, posted Nov 11th 2009 12:45PM
Lopez TonightOn Monday night, George Lopez's late-night talk show ('Lopez Tonight') made its cross-network debut on TNT, TBS and TruTv. Looking just at TBS' numbers, The Hollywood Reporter says that Lopez drew in 1.7 million viewers -- quite a respectable feet for an 11PM cable show. That represents a 70 percent increase in viewers from the networks' typical faves in that time slot (among them repeats of 'My Name is Earl'). In addition, it puts Lopez above current season averages from late-night heavyweights Craig Ferguson (CBS), Jimmy Kimmel (ABC) and Jon Stewart (Comedy Central).

In the meantime, the face of late night is changing on other networks as well. Diversity seems to be the name of the game, with recent premieres by Wanda Sykes on Fox, and a new nightly show hosted by Mo'Nique sitting pretty on BET. Skyes' show is clearly aimed at her audience, and, admirably, she doesn't tone it down; her monologues, for example, sound exactly like her comedy routines. Her guests -- which have included Mary Lynn Rajskub, 'Brothers'' Daryl Mitchell and 'Amazing Race' host Phil Keoghan -- sip cocktails as they discuss current events.
