'Monk' Series Finale Recap

by Daniel Frankel, posted Dec 5th 2009 1:30PM
After eight light, uplifting seasons, Det. Adrian Monk exited basic cable Friday night to the tune of a Randy Newman score and a 'Six Feet Under'-like montage.

Tony Shalhoub's groundbreaking character survived a near-lethal poisoning in the finale (the perp used the Defective Detective's own sanitary wipes to transmit the toxin). His wife's killer -- it was a federal judge played by Craig T. Nelson! -- has finally been caught. And Monk learned he has a lovely 26-year-old daughter, working nearby as a Bay Area movie critic, eager to connect with him.

Review: Monk - Mr. Monk and the End (Part 2) (series finale)

by Allison Waldman, posted Dec 5th 2009 12:30AM

The pressure of writing the last episode must be tremendous. Especially for a long-running show like Monk. The writers have to tie up loose ends, satisfy viewers' desire for the characters, and leave fans with a sense of closure. Closure, in fact, is the word Dr. Bell used with Adrian. Monk was looking for it and so were we.

But the ending is tough. There have been some shows that have stumbled badly at the end. Seinfeld, for instance, was a real stinker. But the memory of Newhart, which harkened back to The Bob Newhart Show may be the best-ever. Now, in the broader scheme of things, Seinfeld was a much better series than Newhart; in every way but the ending. Which brings us back to Monk. How did the writers navigate the Monk finale? Follow me after the jump and I'll tell you all about it.

The TV Squad Podcast: Surprising shows, decade-end lists, and the Commenter of the Week!

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 4th 2009 1:25PM
TV Squad logoIt's our first four-way panel this week, as Jason Hughes, Kona Gallagher and Allison Waldman join me to talk about some of the goings on in TV this week:

  • We talk about the shows that have surprised us so far this season, including The Middle and White Collar,
  • It's the end of the '00s as we know it, and we feel fine: we talk about the inevitable end-of-decade lists that will drip out this month (including ours!) and what we expect to see on them,
  • A new feature: Our Commenter of the Week! Knowing our commenters, you can be pretty sure we didn't pick one that said how much they loved us.
  • Our picks for the week -- including the last episode of Monk -- and much more.

Run time is 1:01:38

You can listen to the podcast below, or download from here or by subscribing to our RSS podcast feed. It is also available via iTunes. Feel free to leave us feedback in the comments or drop us a line at tvsquadpodcast [at] gmail [dot] com.

As usual, the music at the beginning and end of the podcast is "Life" by Justin Trawick. Though I had so much fun adding the George Takei ID to the mix, I added another small surprise at the top of this 'cast, a call-back to an interview I did a few years ago. Hope you enjoy it.

What to Watch: December 4

by Kim Potts, posted Dec 4th 2009 6:00AM
'Monk' (9PM, USA) series finale
After eight seasons, the neurotic sleuth rides off into that great TV land in the sky with an episode that promises to give him answers to the series-long mystery of who killed his beloved wife Trudy. The show, which helped establish USA as the network for character-driven series and won three Emmy Awards for star Tony Shaloub, ties up all the show's loose ends, in fact, and even sends Mr. Monk off with a Randy Newman song written specifically for the finale.

'Monk' Series Finale: 'Mr. Monk and the End' Part 1 - Monk Poisoned (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Nov 30th 2009 2:33PM
In the first part of the 'Monk' series finale, the notoriously obsessive-compulsive Monk finally gets closure on the death of his wife and discovers someone is trying to poison him.

In this clip, Monk requires more than a dozen doctors, nurses and orderlies to hold him down during a blood test. The results indicate a would-be killer is trying to murder him through slow poisoning.

How do you think Monk will end?

by Allison Waldman, posted Nov 29th 2009 3:02PM
trudy_monk_usa_kissThe other night, USA Network broadcast part one of the Monk finale. In that next to last episode, many storylines were presented for the possible big finish this upcoming week. And it could be a potentially whopper of an ending. In my review, I speculated a little about what may be coming, and the comments have been flying in to TV Squad with viewers sharing their thoughts. That's got me thinking... what else might be at play?

Tony Shalhoub was interviewed about the end of Monk and it was interesting that as an actor, he waited till he filmed the end before learning Monk's fate. He said, "I think it's a good send-off. At the beginning of the season, the writers asked me if I wanted to know how everything [ended] and I said, if it was okay with them, I'd rather wait."

Why is ABC treating Ugly Betty so badly?

by Allison Waldman, posted Nov 29th 2009 1:28PM
ugly_betty_2009The ratings are in from Friday night -- that was the Friday after Thanksgiving, a night when the major networks were showing movies and reruns -- and, not surprising, the numbers are pretty low.

Oh, wait, one network had new shows, ABC. But the ratings for a new Ugly Betty at 9 p.m. were dismal. Ugly Betty came in dead last with just a 0.9/3, only 3.39 million viewers for that timeslot.

A few weeks ago, I thought -- hoped -- things were looking up for Ugly Betty. It looked like the show was going to get a timeslot switch to Eastwick's Wednesday at 10 p.m. Alas, ABC has done nothing. Eastwick is not picked up for the season and it's still losing in that spot -- it had a 1.2/4 and just 3.89 million viewers this past week. That said, why isn't ABC giving Betty some love with a time change?

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 16th 2009 6:05PM
Andy Barker, P.I.Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Who would buy Hammertime on DVD? I'm actually asking. Is that something that you would actually watch again after you've already watched it on TV?

There are some good complete series sets being released this week, though: Andy Richter's Andy Barker, P.I., a Rome gift set, Farscape, and a new box for The Sopranos.

  • 7th Heaven - Season 9
  • Andy Barker, P.I. - Complete Series
  • Ben 10: Alien Force - Vol. 5

Review: Monk - Mr. Monk is the Best Man

by Allison Waldman, posted Nov 14th 2009 12:55AM

(S08E13) Just three more episodes till the end of Monk, so it sort of feels like they're wrapping up some loose ends. Tonight, the focus was on Leland Francis Stottlemeyer, Monk's best friend, the guy who has been solidly behind Adrian through all the difficult years since Trudy's death, helping Monk to cope and remain gainfully employed as a police consultant.

Leland's always been a good guy, but not so lucky in love. As the title suggested, if Mr. Monk is the best man, that means that Leland was the groom. More about the nuptials after the jump.

Review: Monk - Mr. Monk Goes Camping

Well, after the past couple of shows -- especially Monk's reunion with Sharona -- I was imagining that the final season of Monk was sprinting to the finish line, delivering some final hours that would be up there with the best ever for the series.

Then Adrian went camping. This might be one of the weakest Monks of all time. The funniest thing was the title, which was where the inspiration began and -- sadly -- ended. Nothing worked. Monk and children? No. Monk in the woods? No. Monk and the grizzly bear? Do you even have to wonder? More after the jump.

Review: Monk - Mr. Monk and the Dog

All the people involved in Monk know that this is the last season. They've promoted it as such, and clearly they've planned it that way. That could explain why Monk is evolving in these last episodes. I was truly encouraged by last week's Sharona episode, which was one of the best Monks I've seen in a long time.

Could the next episode possibly be that good? Well, not quite, but it was wonderful. I'm giving anything away -- it's in the title -- but this was all about Mr. Monk and a dog. Yes, Adrian and a dog. More after the jump.
