CBS brings British musical series Viva Blackpool to the U.S.

by Joel Keller, posted Oct 18th 2006 1:44PM
Viva Blackpool logoAccording to Variety, CBS has struck a deal with Hugh Jackman and John Palermo to produce a pilot for an American version of the British miniseries Viva Blackpool. BBC fans will remember that Viva Blackpool was a musical extension to a previous series that was simply called Blackpool; it revolves around a small-potatoes casino owner, Ripley Holden, who tries to open a huge Vegas resort. Among the mysteries, murders, and sex, the musical version also used production numbers to punctuate the action.

If you're thinking Cop Rock, though, think again; Viva Blackpool won a Peabody Award and got a Golden Globe nomination. Anyway, Jackman will appear in the pilot episode, but no other casting has been announced.

Monk finally meets his father

by Adam Finley, posted Oct 11th 2006 10:59AM
dan hedayaMark your calendar's, Monk fans. On November 17, a special holiday episode of the popular USA series will reunite the obsessive compulsive germaphobe crime fighter with his estranged father, a man Monk hasn't seen in forty years. Monk's long lost father will be played by actor Dan Hedaya, a name you might not recognize, but you'll probably recognize his face. He's one of those "oh that guy" actors. Well, if you remember Nick Tortelli from Cheers, you know who I'm talking about. As if I even had to mention it, Monk's father is mixed up in a crazy mystery and needs his son's help. You know, otherwise it wouldn't exactly be an episode of Monk, would it? The series returns with weekly episodes in January of 2007.

Dog Bites Man: Assignment: Gas Prices

by Adam Finley, posted Aug 3rd 2006 11:31AM

(S01E08) dog bites manIn this episode the KHBX news team finds out they might all be fired due to budget cuts. As Tillie tells her co-workers in the opening scene, it's either going to be them or the Doppler radar, and the Doppler is pretty popular.

Since everyone is convinced their days are numbered, they each being to look into different jobs. Alan the director decides to get into the business of directing Korean karaoke videos, which seems like a natural career move since his mother was bisexual. When Tillie corrects him and says he actually meant "bilingual" he explains that his mother's lover was actually Korean.

Marty, on the other hand, decides to try stand-up comedy, and in what manages to be both the funniest and least funniest scene he tries his act out at a comedy club where an agent is in attendance, and bombs horribly. Of course, A.D Miles, who plays Marty, is bombing on purpose, and it's funny to watch the agent try to explain to him why she won't take him on as a client.

Diagnosis Murder coming to DVD in September

by Bob Sassone, posted May 28th 2006 8:38AM
Dick Van DykeTVShowsonDVD.com reports that the first season of the long-running Dick Van Dyke series will be released on September 12. It will be a 5 disc set, but will not include the pilot episode of the series, which was actually an episode of Jake and the Fatman. So maybe we'll have to wait for that DVD set to see the pilot ep of Diagnosis Murder.

I really liked this show, actually. It was sort of a male Murder, She Wrote, and it was good to see Vany Dyke on a weekly series again.

House's Robert Sean Leonard and Katie Jacobs speak

by Adam Finley, posted May 2nd 2006 12:41PM

houseThe Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan has an interesting article on the hit FOX series House, including interviews with actor Robert Sean Leonard (who plays Dr. Wilson, both friend and foil to the incorrigible Dr. House) and Katie Jacobs, the show's executive producer. Despite his character growing on fans, Leonard claims he wants to keep his role small so he has free time to spend with his wife. Ah, that's sweet. We also get some insight into Hugh Laurie, who plays the titular role. Apparently Laurie is very self-critical when it comes to his American accent. Personally, I think he does it flawlessly, which is more than I can say for Michael Caine.

Oh yeah, and a reminder to House fans that the first part of a two-part episode airs this evening.

Veronica Mars: Look Who's Stalking

by Keith McDuffee, posted Apr 25th 2006 11:17PM
veronica mars(S02E20) Earlier today I put out the call for new viewers to this show that this was their last chance to catch a plot-ruining-free episode this season. For the most part I was right, though I'm not sure this was the best episode for a newcomer to see. There were a lot of inside jokes that might have gotten lost on someone not familiar with past episodes. With that said though, we were thrown so many new pieces of the big puzzle this week to make even fans' heads spin.
