Review: Californication - Mia Culpa

(S03E12) "That's the thing about secrets, Hank. They have a funny way of coming out." - Mia Cross
If last night's episode was the first episode of Californication you have ever seen, it might have left you more than a little confused. Your friends who gab about it around the office water cooler have always been telling you how its the raucous and dirty sitcom of the decade, a show that takes the wit of Robert Benchley and combines it with the out-of-control plot of those Spring Break party movies that used to play late at night on the USA Network.
You're tired of feeling like you're missing out on something awesome, so you finally decide to tune in and instead what you find is a rather heavy and deep emotional look at the effects of a life spent partying, boozing and philandering.
Review: Californication - Comings and Goings

(S03E11) "Ladies, start your egos." - Richard Bates to Hank and Stacy KoontzHank Moody is the very definition of a man who deserves a serious ass-kicking.
He may not mean to act like the world's biggest douchebag. In fact, out of the entire world lineup of douchebags, he's certainly towards the end of life's long line. That still doesn't mean he doesn't deserve one less than the guy at the very front of the line, whoever that poor bastard may be. My money is on the mutant offspring of Attila the Hun and Spencer the Pratt.
But why does that guy who gets to deliver said ass-kicking have to be the world's dorkiest jilted man? A man who when confronting the man who gave his way a ride down the Pleasure Expressway challenges said man to a duel with blanks? And before you even think of asking, yes, copious amounts of alcohol were involved. Just another Sunday for Californication.

(S03E09) "I had a plan, I did, but it just didn't work out the way I thought it would."/"What? You thought he'd (Hank) do a good job of being in charge?" - Karen to Becca
Remember watching Friends and feeling that great sense of heavy letdown when you realized that week's diversion of reality would be a "Joey-heavy episode"?
That describes this week's Californication to a tee, except the great sense of heavy letdown doesn't quite sit on top of your soul with the girth and grim sadism of an evil sumo wrestler.
Sneak Peek: the third season of Californication
by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 19th 2009 8:05AM
Is Hank Moody a likable character? From the scenes I've seen of Californication, he seems like one of these drinking/smoking/sex-addicted/wise-ass guys you see a lot of, but there's also a smattering of a****le in there, too, and it seems like he crosses from anti-hero to kind of a dick. Maybe I'm wrong, though I hate anyone who uses the word "cashish." The last line in the season three promo below is pretty funny, though.
The new season debuts September 27.

Californication actress's husband found dead
by Kristin Sample, posted May 22nd 2008 9:41AM
Just one day after Natascha McElhone celebrated her tenth anniversary with her husband Martin Kelly, he was found dead, slumped on the doorstep of their home in London. Kelly, who was only 42 years old, was one of Britian's premiere plastic surgeons. He was found by his friend, also a doctor. As of yet, no cause of death has been verified. But while Scotland Yard is treating the death as unexplained and will administer a post-mortem exam, Kelly is believed to have died of a heart attack. McElhone is currently going back to the U.K. as she was filming in the States this week. Kelly had joined her Stateside for their anniversary celebration. The actress is expecting the couple's third child. A publicist for the actress said they had no comment at this time. However, McElhone's stepfather, Roy Greenslade, told the press,"It's still a mystery about the death,"It's so unexpected. Such a fit, handsome, fighting young man... We are in a bit of a terrible state to be honest."
Californication -- An early look
by Isabelle Carreau, posted Aug 11th 2007 6:40PM
Five years after the end of The X-Files, David Duchovny is back on the small screen! Okay, he did guest star here and there since then but coming this Monday, he is back as a regular on a series. Duchovny will play Hank Moody, a self-destructive writer, in Showtime's Californication. TV fans who are used to seeing Duchovny portray The X-Files' Fox Mulder and haven't seen much of his other projects will be placed outside of their comfort zone when watching him play Hank Moody, especially if they tune in Californication without knowing what it's about.
