'Batman: The Brave and the Bold' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for March 15, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Mar 15th 2011 6:15PM
batman brave bold dvdThe Dark Knight's animated adventures in 'Batman: The Brave and the Bold' offer a pleasant departure from Christopher Nolan's dark and broody Bat-films.

The Nolan flicks are great, but 'Brave and the Bold' feels almost revolutionary and, in a way, punk rock in its depiction of Bruce Wayne's crime-fighting world as a colorful, jokey, kid's comic book come to life.

Catch up with the sunny Cartoon Network series with 'Batman: The Brave and the Bold' Season 1, Part 2 available today on DVD. The show isn't exactly for everyone, but it should please any Batfan looking for a smart, action-packed and humor-filled dose of cartoon superhero badassery.

'The Walking Dead' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for March 8, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Mar 8th 2011 12:00PM
AMC and Anchor Bay EntertainmentIt's a good day for discerning gorehounds: Season 1 of AMC's 'The Walking Dead' hits DVD and Blu-ray today. (Didya enter our giveaway yet?) Both sets feature all six season 1 episodes of the hit zombie-apocalypse drama based on the graphic novel by Robert Kirkman.

Kirkman even co-wrote a few episodes, including the haunting and suspenseful installment 'Tell It to the Frogs,' which saw lawman leader Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) finally reuniting with his family after fending off gobs of hungry, undead Atlantans.

Filmmaker Frank Darabont ('The Mist,' 'Shawshank Redemption') is the mastermind behind the show's artful mix of panic and pathos. Darabont pops up in a producers' convention panel and a "making-of" featurette on the season 1 DVD and Blu-ray special features (sorry, no commentary).

The highly anticipated second season of 'The Walking Dead' premieres later this year, but the short first season should satisfy your zombie fix for now.

'ReBoot' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for March 1, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Mar 1st 2011 3:15PM
reboot shout factory dvdBefore 'The Matrix,' there was 'ReBoot.' OK, maybe that's taking it a little too far, but it's hard not to overstate the importance and influence of 'ReBoot' -- it was the first fully computer-generated animated TV series, after all.

The sci-fi adventure series, which aired on Saturday mornings in the U.S. in the mid 1990s, stood out not only because of its highly stylized (but admittedly clunky by today's standards) computer-generated visuals, but also for its ambitious serial storytelling and its sly take on the world's growing obsession with technology and video games.

Shout! Factory has released Seasons 1 and 2, packaged together, today as well as the nine-disc 'Definitive Mainframe Edition,' which features a 20-page booklet, making of doc, and episode commentary from the series creators. Shiver me templates!

Larry KingLarry King, stand-up comedian?

At the age of 77, the former CNN host is embarking on his newest career journey with a one-man comedy show called 'Larry King: Standing Up.'

The suspender-clad 'Larry King Live' star will crack wise about his life and career as well as answer audience questions beginning April 14 in Torrington, Conn., TV Guide reports. The tour will also take him to Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, New Jersey and Nevada.

King stepped down from his namesake show last year after a quarter-century grilling public figures about the latest news.

The Man with the Golden Voice is getting another chance to extend his 15 minutes of fame in the form of a new reality show. The series, which begins shooting in two weeks, will document his life in Ohio, Brooklyn and Los Angeles. [TMZ]

Yet another 'Teen Mom' star is in legal hot water -- but this time, it's one of the teen dads. 'Teen Mom 2' star Jonathan "Jo" Rivera was "arrested last week for being under the influence of marijuana while driving with his brother in Warren County, Pa." [E! Online]

Courteney Cox is traveling from 'Cougar Town' to the Food Network. Don't worry -- it's not too far of a relocation. Since Cox films her sitcom on the same lot as Bobby Flay's 'The Next Food Network Star,' she recently popped over to film a guest judge spot. [NY Post]

'Weeds' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online Feb. 22, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Feb 22nd 2011 1:08PM
weeds season 6 dvdSeason 6 of 'Weeds,' released today on DVD and Blu-ray, saw the Botwins fleeing (again) from the law, from a rogue journalist, from angry baby mamas and from Nancy's mob boss husband Esteban after the shocking event of the season 5 finale.

The uneven season, with the Botwins usually on the road or trading locales in seemingly every other episode, almost felt like the show was trying to reinvent itself after every hour. But, as usual, everything was held together by an engaging season-long arc, the Botwin boys' growing pains (Silas found a new dad! Shane is a demented genius!), Uncle Andy's wise, X-rated quips and, of course, a sad-funny guest spot from Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss.

The emotional and exciting season finale still has fans looking forward to the show's seventh season, which premieres later this year.

'Project Runway' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for Feb. 8, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Feb 8th 2011 2:50PM
The Weinstein CompanyAfter jumping from Bravo to Lifetime for season 7, and the cancellation of the vapid spinoff 'Models of the Runway,' 'Project Runway' took a risk and expanded its format for season 8.

Episodes were stretched to the extra-fabulous running time of 90 minutes, and 17 contestants were chosen (one more than usual).

'The Complete Eighth Season,' released today on DVD, kicked off with the show's shortest challenge ever -- the aspiring designers only had five hours to make it work -- as Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum and returning judges Nina Garcia and Michael Kors presided over a season full of bitchy bickering, stressful challenges, big upsets and a few stunning collections.

A few celebrity guest judges, including Selma Blair, Betsey Johnson, Kristen Bell and January Jones, arrived to help separate the hot messes from the future runway stars.

glee season 2 volumen 1 dvdCan't get enough 'Glee' in your life? Well, you're in luck. Hoping to cash in on the series' red-hot popularity, Fox is repeating the model it used last year and releasing the first half of the show's current season on DVD.

'Glee' Season 2, Volume 1, available today, features the first 10 episodes of the hit series' sophomore year.

This first batch of season 2 eps, from 'Audition' to last December's 'A Very Glee Christmas,' are worth re-watching to see Ryan Murphy and his game cast tackle some heavy issues like bullying, faith, coming to terms with one's sexual identity and, of course, Britney Spears. Plus Gwyneth Paltrow!

The three-disc set also boasts a few featurettes, including 'The Wit of Brittany,' which captures all of Brittany's quirky one-liners going back to season 1, and 'Getting Waxed with Jane Lynch,' which chronicles the creation of the Sue Sylvester statue at Madame Tussaud's museum. The show, about a U.S. Marshal charged with cleaning up his Kentucky hometown, was a hit for the cable network, earning more than 4 million viewers for its premiere episode, the second highest debut for FX since 'The Shield.'

The first season of 'Justified' was met with universal acclaim and helped bumped Olyphant's star up a few letters on the alphabet.

Season 2 premieres Feb. 9, but you can catch up with Marshal Raylan's adventures now with the recent release of the first season on DVD and Blu-ray. 'Hot in Cleveland' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for Jan. 11, 2011

hot in cleveland season 1 dvdTV Land's surprise hit comedy 'Hot in Cleveland' takes the old fashioned approach to crafting a sitcom -- they do it in front of a live studio audience.

The show's cast also boasts the unstoppable Betty White and the lovely Valerie Bertinelli, as well as seasoned vets from sitcoms past, Jane Leeves ('Frasier') and Wendie Malick ('Just Shoot Me').

In the age of the single-camera comedy and the mockumentary, 'Hot in Cleveland' is definitely a throwback, but it's a funny, comforting and familiar throwback. Season 1, out on DVD today, also features guest spots from familiar faces like TV legend Carl Reiner, Susan Lucci and Huey Lewis.

The show heads back to the tube on June 15 with an even bigger lineup of guest stars, including Mary Tyler Moore, Isaiah Mustafa and Melanie Griffith.

'The Sarah Jane Adventures' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for Jan. 4, 2011

by Mike Moody, posted Jan 4th 2011 1:30PM
sarah jane adventures season 3 dvdFor most of The Doctor's companions, flying around in the TARDIS and battling Daleks and Cybermen is the most dangerous and exciting time of their lives. But not for Sarah Jane Smith; her life only got crazier after parting ways with The Doctor. Now she's forging her own strange sci-fi tinged path in the BBC's 'Doctor Who' spinoff 'The Sarah Jane Adventures.'

Essentially pitched as 'Doctor Who for Kids,' 'Sarah Jane,' created by former 'New Who' mastermind Russell T. Davies, has won over critics and audiences of all ages with imaginative storytelling, humor and an assured lead performance from Elisabeth Sladen.

Season 3 of 'The Sarah Jane Adventures,' on DVD today, finds Sarah Jane and crew teaming up with new alien friends and going on some memorable timey wimey trips of their own.

Despite some sketchy-looking visual and make-up effects here and there -- the result of a reportedly slashed budget -- season 3 of 'Sarah Jane' offers six episodes of witty and fun fantasy/sci-fi that, like 'Doctor Who,' isn't afraid to get a little dark and challenging every now and then.

'United States of Tara' and New TV Shows on DVD, Streaming Online for Dec. 28, 2010

by Mike Moody, posted Dec 28th 2010 3:00PM
united states of tara season 2 dvdThe first season of 'United States of Tara' ended with Tara, a mother with Dissociative Identity Disorder played by Emmy and Golden Globe winner Toni Collette, on the road to recovery and surrounded by her dysfunctional but supportive family.

As season two begins, Tara seems to be winning the battle to suppress her alternate personalities, but tragedy soon strikes next door and her "alters" reemerge, more destructive and real than ever before.

Collette's performance, again nominated for a Golden Globe this year, is probably the best reason to recommend the second season of 'Tara' on DVD, but it's not the only one. The Showtime dramedy, created by Diablo Cody and produced by Steven Spielberg, is a smart, funny and engrossing look at a family dealing with a complex problem and learning to accept that the word "normal" means different things to different people.

The series returns to Showtime for a third season next year, so catch up with the Gregson family and Tara's growing stable of alters now.

Netflix Is Ready for Primetime Streaming

by Harley W. Lond, posted Dec 2nd 2010 10:30PM
Netflix is taking over the world.

According to a report in the New York Post, Netflix is bound and determined to add current episodes of hit TV shows to its Web streaming service, a move that is already causing network executives to quiver in their boots. It's bad enough that Netflix put a dent in the home video rental business, all but putting the final nails in Blockbuster's coffin; now it's scaring Hollywood with the prospect of becoming a streaming giant.

The Post reports that Netflix is in talks with the studios about gaining access to current episodes of primetime shows and is willing to pay between $70,000 and $100,000 per episode. The company currently streams older episodes of such shows as 'Nip/Tuck,' 'Veronica Mars' and 'The Family Guy,' and recenly cut a deal with NBC Universal to stream "Saturday Night Live' the day after it airs on the network.

While everyone thought Conan would simply jump to Fox because it was the last remaining network without a strong late night slot, Coco and company were being courted by all sorts of networks and media outlets, including ... Microsoft???

That's right, the technology giant had been talking to Conan about a deal that would have brought his nightly talk show to their XBox Live service.
