CSI: Big Shots
(S07E19) That was a pretty enjoyable episode. Pulling a move that CSI hasn't used in some time, the episode began with what seemed like two completely unrelated cases, but by the end of the episode, they were completely intertwined.
Adding to the episode was the return of Method Man, reprising his season six guest starring role as club and rap mogul Drops. The guy is a good actor. I don't care what anyone says. He brings this likability to any character he plays and Drops is no exception. He's a thug, but the whole time I still found myself rooting for him to find a way out.
However, the best part of the episode was definitely the closure Greg got from the Demetrius James case. Greg finally stood up for himself. It's about time.
CSI: Empty Eyes
(S07E18) Well this wasn't the best episode of CSI, but it still had its high points. I know it's a lot to ask to have every episode tie together and not stand alone, but I was really hoping for some more stuff on The Miniature Killer.
What we did get was a look at Sara how this job is affecting her. We've always known that she was the most emotional member of the Vegas team, but it really came through on this case. I suppose holding the hand of someone who's about to die will do that to you. However, as I said, despite the mediocrity of the episode as a whole, there were a few really good high points.
Nickelodeon's iCarly lets kids contribute to the show
Somebody give Nickelodeon a cookie, because the network "gets it."
The new comedy series iCarly, starring Miranda Cosgrove (Drake and Josh) as the host of a Web show, will allow kids at home to contribute content to the series through a special Web site where they can upload videos. Chosen videos may be integrated into future episodes, or become part of the online Webcast. The series will premiere with thirteen episodes this September.
I think this could be a really cool thing, and I hope more shows of this kind follow. Nickelodeon's audience now consists mostly of digital natives, kids more or less born and raised on the Web, and a new approach like this makes a lot of sense.
CSI: Monster in the Box
(S07E16) I'm glad I got back into this show (I'm going to start reviewing it weekly in place of Numb3rs) because it's good again. After the great four episode story arc with Keppler, Grissom is back on track hunting down his latest arch-nemesis -- The Miniature Replica Killer.
They thought they had him with the death of Ernie Dell, but no. The CSI writers have crafted quite the story here, possibly one of the best multi-episode arcs this show has seen yet.
Grissom finally got around to opening the large cardboard box that was delivered to his office right before he left on sabbatical. We knew what was inside of it though since we got a sneak peek right before he left. It's another replica. The only problem? The murder hadn't occurred... yet.
Nickelodeon to air cartoon created by Amy Poehler
There are a lot of SNLers that go on to their own sitcoms. Others go on to star in movies. Still others end up playing guest roles on various shows. But how many current or former cast members of the venerable sketch show have created a cartoon series? That's one of the reasons why I like Amy Poehler, besides the fact that she's one of the funniest people on the planet these days (I base that statement on her work doing ASSSSCAT at the UCB Theatre in New York, not her SNL stuff): she's willing to try projects that other comedic actors would never think of. As a good example of that, she's created a cartoon called Mighty B, where she will play the voice of Bessie, who TV Week describes as "the word's most ambitious 10-year-old Honeybee scout." Nickelodeon has picked up the cartoon and will air 20 episodes. It's part of a push to create new episodes of its animated series, including veteran ones like SpongeBob SquarePants.
Given Poehler's penchant for selecting odd character roles and her ability to do some great funny voices, this should fit right into Nick's surreal but kid-friendly slate of cartoons.
The Nine: Outsiders
(S01E07) So we finally find out what Jeremy did in the bank to make Lizzie so upset and make him feel so guilty. One of the gunmen took the both of them to a hallway in the back of the bank, and while he was distracted, Jeremy ran for a back door! He actually wanted to get out, leaving Lizzie there, but felt really guilty about it. And now she's pregnant and they can't stay together and they have to tell his parents about it.Hogan Knows Best returns October 22
VH1's popular reality series Hogan Knows Best returns for a third season on Sunday, October 22 at 9pm. The new season will see the family make the move from Clearwater to Miami as daughter Brooke prepares to release her first album and son Nick continues to delve into the sport of drift racing and make a name for himself in the sport. A special online series "Hogans Revealed" will debut on VH1's VSPOT site the same time the episodes air, and a special sneak peek of the episodes will also air on the site four days before they air on television. If you're thinking of having a family of your own some day and think the only way you can learn how it's done is to watch an aging wrestler with lots of money do it in front of a camera crew, then by cracky, this show was made just for you. Personally, I take all my child rearing advice from Randy "Macho Man" Savage, but to each his own.TurboNick 2.0 launches
Nickelodeon's broadband site, TurboNick, recently relaunched with a few new features. Most of them I couldn't really care less about, such as creating playlists and trade them with friends (I always appreciate a good cartoon, but I'm a little too old to be sending SpongeBob clips to my pals). The coolest part about TurboNick 2.0, I think, is the new mash-up game that lets you create mini-movies by inserting video clips, audio and transition effects. I've been playing around with it, and if you're a young kid or a bored adult like myself killing time between blog posts, I recommend you check it out. The new site also offers games, a searchable database of Nick shows available online, user ratings and content available in other languages.Nick tells kids to go outside
Yesterday while I was looking around the Web for links to add to this post, I noticed that Nickelodeon's Nick.com site had a scroll on it telling kids to go outside and play in honor of the Worldwide Day of Play. The network also went off the air for a few hours, replacing programming with a similar scroll. That's sound advice, of course, but I pretty much had the same reaction I did when TV Land did the same thing recently in honor of Family Day. Won't people just change the channel? I don't fault Nickelodeon for trying, but people are conditioned to automatically hit the clicker when something appears on screen they don't like, whether it's a show they hate, and annoying commercial, or words on the screen telling them to go outside.Nickelodeon goes all artsy underground
Animation historian Jerry Beck mentioned a very cool new site set up by Nick Magazine (that's "Nick" as in "Nickelodeon") that features drawings of Nick characters as interpreted by other Nick animators or underground and alternative comic strippers. The concept originated in Nickelodeon Magazine, which has a section called "The Comic Book" that features underground cartoonists --or so I'm told, since I don't subscribe to Nickelodeon Magazine. The Live Journal site is a nice bit of synergy between Nick and the underground artists, and something I'm sure I'll be checking out a lot in the future. Here's Avatar as drawn by Butch Hartman of The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom. The picture on the left is Jimmy Neutron as drawn by comic artist Jake Parker. I think I prefer his version to the original.
