Simon Cowell Apologizes to Cheryl Cole for 'X Factor' Fiasco

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jun 7th 2011 6:15AM
Simon CowellAfter weeks of speculation it was confirmed yesterday that Nicole Scherzinger is replacing Cheryl Cole on 'The X Factor' in the U.S.

Now, head honcho Simon Cowell has apologized to Cole for the chaos surrounding the judging lineup on his new talent show, but insists that she wasn't fired.

According to 'The Sun' newspaper, Cowell takes full responsibility for the decision to replace Cole with Scherzinger, and said he did it for her own good. He said she seemed out of her depth on the U.S. show, and so producers offered her a quiet exit with the offer of returning to her old job on 'The X Factor' U.K.

"The feeling was that she was slightly out of her comfort zone in America. The intention was to do it quietly and say to her she had an option to rejoin the UK show. ... At the end of the day we were saying, 'Move to another show for even more money'. There was an offer of around £2.5 million on the table including bonuses. How is that [firing] someone?"

It's Official: Cheryl Cole Out, Nicole Scherzinger In as 'X Factor' Judge

by Chris Harnick, posted Jun 6th 2011 12:15PM
After weeks of conflicting reports, British pop star Cheryl Cole is officially off Fox's 'The X Factor.' Cole will be replaced by co-host Nicole Scherzinger.

Fox and 'X Factor' producers FremantleMedia and Syco TV released this statement: "Nicole Scherzinger will be replacing Cheryl Cole on the judging panel of 'The X Factor.' Nicole will join Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul on their search across America to find the next global superstar or group to win the life-changing $5 million recording deal. Nicole has previously joined Simon Cowell as a guest judge on 'The X Factor' for the UK version of the show in 2010. Steve Jones will act as sole host of 'The X Factor.'"

No reason for Cole's dismissal was given, but speculation has run rampant. Whether she lacked chemistry with her fellow judges, was hard to understand or just couldn't get the visa, one thing is finally clear: Cole is definitely off the reality series.

'X Factor' Shake-Up: Is Nicole Scherzinger Replacing Cheryl Cole as Judge?

by Maggie Furlong, posted May 25th 2011 7:00PM
Cheryl Cole & Nicole ScherzingerSimon Cowell's new show 'X Factor' doesn't premiere for another four months, but there's already trouble in his post-'Idol' ploy for TV domination.

TMZ is reporting that one of the previously announced judges, British pop singer Cheryl Cole, is out. Replacing her? Former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, who was set to co-host the show with Brit Steve Jones.

Why the switch? No one knows for sure -- could it be the rash of "Who is Cheryl Cole?" searches lately? -- but it doesn't bode well for the show, which has already been taping audition rounds in L.A.

Fellow judges Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Paula Abdul are staying put, as far as we know. Also Jones will now reportedly be the only host; Scherzinger's former co-host slot will not be filled.

'The X Factor' Auditions: L.A. Reid is 'Mean,' Simon Cowell tells Audience to Behave Badly

by Catherine Lawson, posted May 9th 2011 7:40AM
Antonio 'L.A.' ReidWith the 11th-hour confirmation of Paula Abdul as the fourth judge, 'X Factor' auditions were able to get underway over the weekend. And how. Fans got to see new Brit additions Cheryl Cole and Steve Jones in action, Paula Abdul showed up three hours late, Simon Cowell named the audience "the fifth judge," and one judge showed his nasty side.

Simon Cowell is used to being "the mean one" on 'American Idol,' but now it seems as though record label exec and Grammy-winning producer L.A. Reid is going to give him a run for his money. According to EW.com, Reid chose a direct approach when he introduced himself to the audience: "I'm not the Randy of the panel. I ... judge talent honestly. I'm brutally honest."

Cowell deputized the audience as "the fifth judge" and told them, "Basically you're here to tell us who you like. You can be as badly behaved as you want, actually. The whole reason for doing this is I trust you guys for being able to judge this process. There's $5 million at stake."

'The Sing-Off' Finale: And the Winner Is... (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 21st 2010 12:27AM
'The Sing-Off' Finale: And the Winner Is...Well, it's that time already. It's the final countdown. After a mere two weeks, we've reached the finale of 'The Sing-Off' (Mon., 8PM ET on NBC). Heading into the finals, only four groups remained. All of them were battling it out for $100,000 and a recording contract. But who would make the cut?

First to be eliminated was Talk of the Town, led by 66-year-old Jerry Lawson, who has been singing a cappella for over forty years. The Backbeats -- the only group in the finals with any female singers -- were the next to go home.

This set up an all-male, all-Southern battle for grand prize. Two groups remained: Committed, from Huntsville, Alabama, and Street Corner Symphony, from Nashville, Tennessee.

And the winner of 'The Sing-Off' was ...

'The Sing-Off': Heading Into the Finals, The Backbeats Win in a 'Landslide' (VIDEO)

'The Sing-Off': Heading Into the Finals, The Backbeats Win in a 'Landslide'Well, that was quick. Unlike so many other reality shows, 'The Sing-Off' (Wed., 8PM ET on NBC) doesn't drag things out. The series does its entire run -- from the premiere to the finale -- in a mere two weeks. But don't fret, it should be back next season; it's one of NBC's most popular shows in years.

Before we see if 'The Sing-Off' will return, we'll have to learn who the current finalists will be. Ten groups started the show; after tonight, three would be left. It's been an intense process ... but as they say, "Time makes you bolder" -- even a very short amount of time. And tonight, The Backbeats won in a 'Landslide,' while a fan favorite went home.

The Backbeats have the only female singers left in the contest, and vocalist Joanna Jones led them in an incredible version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide.' The song won over the judges and the group finished at the top of the pack.

'The Sing-Off': 'On the Rocks' Wants You to Pour Some Sugar on Them ... Yeah! (VIDEO)

'The Sing-Off': 'On the Rocks' Wants You to Pour Some Sugar on Them ... Yeah!Step inside, let's walk this way. Hey, television lover! Baby, let's go all night. 'The Sing-Off' (Mon., 8PM ET on NBC) returned for its fourth episode, and the theme for the show's second round was this -- "Guilty Pleasures." Sweet.

The six remaining groups hit us with some very guilty pleasures indeed, including 'Love Shack' and -- yikes! -- 'I Want It That Way.' But cult favorites 'On the Rocks' continued with their winning ways, busting out an awe-inspiring version of Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' -- complete with hilarious/"sexy" choreography.

And the best part? That wasn't even their "guilty pleasure" choice. It was their "hard rock" tune. Their actual guilty pleasure choice was ... a very bad 1980s song.

'The Sing-Off': An Amazing Group Peformance of Kings of Leon's 'Use Somebody' (VIDEO)

'The Sing-Off': An Amazing Group Peformance of Kings of Leon's 'Use Somebody'The fog machine! The slow fist-pumps in the air! The singers awkwardly resting their hands on each others' shoulders! All this could only mean one thing ... 'The Sing-Off' (Wed., 8PM ET on NBC) kicked off with a group performance tonight. All 71 singers took part in a choral rendition of 'Use Somebody' by Kings of Leon, singing these words: "You know that I could use somebody/ Someone like you."

It was an amazing opening performance. But despite the teamwork and camaraderie, it's still a contest. The stakes are high -- the groups are competing for $100,000 and a recording contract. By the end of the night, only 50 singers would be left, as two groups were sent home. Who would be cut?

'The Sing-Off' Season Premiere: Viral Video Stars Do Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance'The combination of amateur singers, famous songs and national TV could be a great concept. Or, it could be a terrible one. The premiere of 'The Sing-Off' (Mon., 8PM ET on NBC) left it up to the viewers to decide.

The reality show features ten amateur singing groups -- all competing for a recording contract and a $100,000 prize. Season Two started with a bang, of sorts. Viral video sensation 'On the Rocks' performed their rendition of Lady Gaga's 'Bad Romance.' If you're not familiar with this song, here are some of the lyrics:

Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah-ah! Roma-roma-mamaa!
Ga-ga-ooh-la-la! Want your bad romance
.

Now, imagine those words filtered through the vocal stylings of a bunch of guys from the University of Oregon, and you should have a good idea of what 'The Sing-Off' is all about.
