On the Scene: 'SYTYCD' Finale's Big Surprise

by Sharon Knolle, posted Aug 13th 2010 9:30AM
Was the biggest surprise of the evening on the 'So You Think You Can Dance' finale who won or was it watching Ellen DeGeneres recreate the season's hottest hip-hop number with tWitch?

We knew Ellen loves to dance, but who knew she could get down so hard -- nearly as hard as Alex Wong, who originated the amazing "Outta Your Mind" routine in week three?

"Who was the most inspirational dancer, this season?" mused producer Nigel Lythgoe after the finale. "I think it's Ellen DeGeneres. You laugh, but the public knows that she is not a dancer. This is somebody that has not had any lessons and there she is, absolutely brilliant. In her own words, I thought she was a carpenter because she nailed it tonight!"

The husband-and-wife choreography team behind the routine, Tabitha and Napoleon D'Umo (aka "Nappy Tabs"), told TV Squad how the Ellen hook-up happened.

"We worked with her last year (on her show) and she's such a fan of dance," Tabitha recalled. "She told us, 'I'm on my summer break and I'm a little bored, let's cook something up.'"

Lauren Gets Pretty Naked on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

Lauren Gets Pretty Naked on 'So You Think You Can Dance'We're down to the final three on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox). And excessive nudity might be the key to victory here.

[Spoiler alert.]

... Oh, we're just kidding. We're sure that this show is decided on the merits of the individual dancers. But still, Lauren does a fairly sexy Cha Cha routine with Pasha. And the judges seem to approve. But is it because Lauren's dancing is awesome, or because she's barely wearing any clothes?

"It looked to me like it was damn near perfect," judge Nigel Lythgoe said.

Hmm. Was that a reaction to the performance itself, or a reaction to how Lauren looked while doing it?

Nigel Lythgoe and Music Producer Jimmy Iovine Sign Deals with 'American Idol'

by Catherine Lawson, posted Aug 5th 2010 6:35AM

Nigel LythgoeSo, 'Idol'-watchers: ready for yet more updates? According to The Los Angeles Times, Nigel Lythgoe has inked a deal to return to the show as executive producer and that music producer Jimmy Iovine has signed on for a "significant" role on the show. It's rumored that Fox will make an announcement later today, so stay tuned.

Although Lythgoe hasn't commented on the deal, it's understood that he'll run the show alongside current executive producer -- and his close friend since childhood -- Ken Warwick, but probably won't return as a judge. Similarly, music industry insider Iovine is also unlikely to be a judge, but instead will be "a mentor of sorts" to the contestants.

Iovine has worked with artists including Bruce Springsteen, U2, Dr. Dre and Eminem over his lengthy career, and his deal with the show comes after 'American Idol' switched record labels from Sony Music to Universal Music Group. Iovine is chairman of UMG's Interscope Geffen A&M label.

Adam Shankman Makes a Gay Marriage Proposal to Nigel Lythgoe (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 4th 2010 11:35PM
Adam Shankman Makes a Gay Marriage Proposal to Nigel LythgoeWell, today is the day. Today is the day that Proposition 8 was legally overturned. In case you haven't been paying attention, Proposition 8 was an amendment that forbade gay couples from getting married in the state of California. And now, it's gone.

In order to celebrate this event, 'So You Think You Can Dance' judge Adam Shankman decided to propose to his fellow judge Nigel Lythgoe. Oh, nice! Gutsy! But will Adam's wedding pitch actually work out?

We wouldn't call 'So You Think You Can Dance' a "gay" show (not that it would matter if it was). ... But it is, at least, fairly flamboyant. On the current episode (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox), the judges got pretty hot and bothered following Lauren's sexy performance with fellow dancer Pasha. "My eyes steamed up," Nigel said, after witnessing their routine. He seemed so aroused that he confessed to wanting to tango with male partner Pasha: "My god! I wanted to dance with you!"

Then, Adam decided to jokingly segue from that remark, by asking Nigel to join him in a gay wedding. "I would like to ... ask my colleague and friend Nigel Lythgoe to marry me."

No 'American Idol' Deals In Place Yet, Say Fox Execs - TCA Report

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 2nd 2010 3:13PM
Peter Rice and Kevin Reilly at the FOX executive session at the Summer 2010 TCAsThe highly-anticipated FOX executive session got underway with a bit of non-news, with the network's entertainment chairman, Peter Rice, saying that "No one has signed a deal yet on either side of the camera to join 'American Idol' that wasn't there last year."

This means that there's no deal for Jennifer Lopez or Steven Tyler to be judges, no deal for Nigel Lythgoe to return as executive producer. Rice and FOX entertainment president Kevin Reilly both deflected questions from the gathered critics about the 'Idol' judging panel, including the status of Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson. Rice would not get into speculating about the judges because "it's not fair to those being speculated about."

All he would really say is that some of the speculation around who the new names are going to be is close to true, and a lot of it is wildly false. One thing Reilly did say in the reporter's scrum after the panel is that the goal is to announce all the changes at once. Whether they'll be able to do that or not is obviously going to be determined on when they get the deals done.

The 'So You Think You Can Dance' Judges Make Their Final Decision (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 30th 2010 1:45AM
The 'So You Think You Can Dance' Judges Make Their Final DecisionThis is it! This is the last week that the judges can eliminate contestants on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 9PM ET on Fox). So really, this is the time for the judges' final decision. (And yes, we realize that we already said that in the headline. Just wanted to drive that point home, in case you weren't paying attention.)

[Spoiler alert.]

Tonight's episode involved the elimination of two contestants -- which has never happened before. Billy, Jose, and Lauren were potentially about to be kicked off. No! Not Lauren! She's the only girl left on this show!

In the end, the formerly injured Billy was kicked off, and Jose as well. Lauren was saved. And now we're down to four contestants. Hopefully, the judges have made the right decisions up to this point. Because after this, they don't get to have a say. All the voting for the final contestants will be done by you, the viewers. So do a good job, guys.

'American Idol' on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 28th 2010 11:50PM
'American Idol' on 'So You Think You Can Dance'We had an exciting live show tonight on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox). Due to the odd results of last week's show, not one, but two dancers were up for elimination on this week's episode. But that all paled next to judge Nigel Lythgoe's weird slip of the tongue.

[Spoiler alert.]

Nigel may be returning as the executive producer on the upcoming season of 'American Idol.' And even after watching Lauren and Allyson's pretty stunning performance, he still seemed pretty distracted by the thought of that. When host Cat Deeley asked him for his reaction to Lauren's dance, Nigel seemed a little confused. He praised Lauren, and agreed that her routine was "powerful," but then said: "This is the first time we've ever seen [anything like] it on 'American Idol.'" Whoops! Wrong show, Nigel! Mr. Lythgoe then swiftly tried to recover.

By the way, rumor has it that if Nigel takes over as producer on 'Idol,' he will eliminate all of the current judges, and will replace them. Two of the possible replacements are -- Elton John and Justin Timberlake. What do you folks think? Does this sound like a good idea to you?

The Return of Nigel Lythgoe: All Change at 'American Idol'?

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jul 27th 2010 7:30AM

Nigel Lythgoe, May 2010Two years after he quit, Nigel Lythgoe may be set to return to 'American Idol,' and word is that he's ready to clean house.

According to 'The Hollywood Reporter,' "Nasty Nigel" is close to signing a deal with Fox to be named executive producer. It's reportedly part of the network's "master plan to reboot the show" following declining ratings and mega-judge Simon Cowell's recent departure. And the seats at judges' table are, it would seem, ALL up for grabs under a new regime.

Execs have been scrambling to fill Cowell's chair with a high-profile music industry insider, and the many names so far linked with the spot have included Sean Combs, Quincy Jones, Bret Michaels and Harry Connick, Jr.

The previous front runner was thought to be singer Chris Isaak, but it's now rumored that at the top of 'American Idol' chief Simon Fuller's wishlist are Elton John and Justin Timberlake. And that although Fuller's been after Elton John for some time -- so far unsuccessfully -- Lythgoe could be the one to sign him, or even him and Timberlake.

But what happens to the current judges? Lythgoe told a reporter in April that if he was in charge at 'American Idol' he'd replace all of them, and he also criticized the decision to up the number of judges from three to four, saying it was "distracting" for the viewers. He's on record as saying that his choice as judges would be: Elton John (him again), Paula Abdul and Usher.

The 'So You Think You Can Dance' Judges Make a Very Odd Decision (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 22nd 2010 11:30PM
The 'So You Think You Can Dance' Judges Make a Very Odd DecisionWelcome back to 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 9PM ET on Fox). It's elimination time, so someone needs to be kicked off. ... Right? But when it came time to do the eliminating, Nigel Lythgoe confessed that the judges were suffering from a mild bout of confusion.

"We haven't made up our minds," Nigel said to host Cat Deeley.

" ... You haven't?" Cat replied.

[Spoiler alert.]

Billy, Robert, and Jose were up for potential elimination. Last night, as you may remember, Billy Bell became the third injured dancer on this season's show. And the previous two injured dancers have already left the contest. ... What to do, what to do? Should another wounded contestant be bounced off the series? Billy made the judges' decision a little harder -- because doctors had cleared him to dance. Yet he still refused to perform this week.

Pain, Tears -- and an Incredible Routine on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 22nd 2010 2:00AM
Pain, Tears -- and an Incredible Routine on 'So You Think You Can Dance'We had ANOTHER injury on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox). What's going on with this show? Is it suffering from a voodoo curse? Is the stage built over an ancient Indian burial ground? We've never seen so many dancers go down before.

[Spoiler alert.]

Billy Bell became the third injured contestant this season -- after hurting his knee during rehearsal. Now, he's in the dreaded "Bottom Three," and faces elimination. Ashley and Alex, the two previously hurt dancers, have both left the show. Will Billy be able to survive?

We can't know Billy's fate yet, so let's move on to the good news. Adechike had an amazing performance tonight, dancing to 'Fallin'' by Alicia Keys. In the end, Adechike poured so much emotion into his routine that he ended up crying during the judges' review. Adam Shankman summed up the judges' universally positive reaction to the dance. Pointing at the weeping Adechike, Shankman said this: "Everything that you're feeling right now: look at you .. that is how you made me feel."

A Judge Cries on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

A Judge Cries on 'So You Think You Can Dance'On tonight's episode of 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox), we had a performance that resonated on several different levels.

Robert and Allison danced to the song 'Fix You' by Coldplay. Their performance was managed by choreographer Travis Wall, whose mother has recently undergone surgery -- and the dance was meant to convey the experience of having an ailing mother.

As it turned out, judge Mia Michaels has recently lost her mother. And watching the performance brought her to tears. "It brings me back to the last week before my mom passed," she said. "And how much I wanted to 'fix her.'"

It was quite an amazing dance routine. And in the end, it made Mia break down and start crying.

The End of a Contestant on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

The End of a Contestant on 'So You Think You Can Dance'Sigh. There's nothing worse than seeing a contestant being kicked off a show for reasons that are beyond his control. But that's what happened tonight on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 9PM ET on Fox).

[Spoiler alert.]

Dancer Alex Wong was eliminated from the show -- and it wasn't his fault. On the previous episode, we learned that Alex suffered a foot injury, but no one was really sure how bad it was. Based on the injury, he was automatically placed in the "Bottom Three" on the show, and was instantly in danger of being kicked off.

Alex was a great dancer, and none of the judges wanted to remove him. But tonight, we learned that he suffered a lacerated Achilles tendon -- and as a result, he wouldn't able to dance for at least another three months.

Upon hearing the news, all the other contestants looked horrified. The judges were upset. Alex cried. But the guy couldn't really dance anymore, so there was nothing that anyone could do. Still, it was all extremely sad.

A Contestant Is Injured on 'So You Think You Can Dance' -- Will He Survive? (VIDEO)

A Contestant Is Injured on 'So You Think You Can Dance' -- Will He Survive? We've got a man down on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox).

[Spoiler alert.]

Top-rated dancer Alex Wong suffered a foot injury during the rehearsals for tonight's episode, and was unable to perform. He ruptured his Achilles tendon, and may not be able to continue on the show. The judges expressed regret, but instantly placed Alex in the dreaded "Bottom Three" -- meaning that he could be voted off at any time. And even if Alex isn't eliminated by the viewers, if he doesn't recover from his injury by next week, then he'll be automatically kicked off the program.

Okay, so: two questions. Is it fair to punish Alex for not being able to dance? And do you think he'll be able to recover? He was doing so well up until now.

Another Contestant Is Kicked Off of 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 2nd 2010 1:25AM
Another Contestant Is Kicked Off of 'So You Think You Can Dance'We had a very appropriate (but unintentional) metaphor tonight on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 9PM ET on Fox). During this episode, the Cirque du Soleil dance troupe showed up. And they performed a version of the Elvis song 'Return to Sender.' But their act featured only a few girls -- who were lost in a sea of men.

It's hard to think of a better metaphor for the show right now, as the guy/girl ratio is becoming seriously skewed. As of tonight, we had six men and only three women. And by the end of the show ... there would be one less dancer.
