Colbert Interviews Michael Hastings, the Man Who Brought Down General McChrystal (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jun 29th 2010 4:00AM
Talking to the Man Who Brought Down General McChrystal on 'Colbert'On 'The Colbert Report' (weeknights, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central), Stephen Colbert sat down with journalist Michael Hastings. Mr. Hastings is a reporter for 'Rolling Stone' magazine, and he did a much-publicized interview with General Stanley McChrystal -- the man who was leading the war effort in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, during this interview, McChrystal strongly criticized Vice President Joe Biden -- and indirectly attacked President Obama.

After that, things didn't go very well for General McChrystal. He was then fired from his position as head general in Afghanistan. (Or he resigned before he was fired, depending on who you'd like to believe.)

And so, Colbert sat down with journalist Hastings, and in his usual inimitable style, asked Mr. Hastings if he was to blame for all of this. Hastings pointed out that he was only reporting what the general had said to him. But that wasn't enough for Stephen.

A Republican Defends BP -- and Gets Yelled at on 'The Daily Show' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jun 18th 2010 3:40AM
A Repubican Defends BP -- and Gets Yelled at on 'The Daily Show'We're at Day 59 of the BP oil spill. It is truly a national nightmare. But it does give Jon Stewart plenty of new material. And it provides us with a few more satirical news bites on 'The Daily Show' (weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central). So, that's not great -- but it's something, at least.

President Obama requested that BP put money into a fund that would assist the victims of the oil spill. Surprisingly, the company actually went ahead and did this. But no good deed goes unpunished -- and so, for some odd reason, Republican Congressman Joe Barton decided to attack this move.

Barton defended British Petroleum -- the company responsible for the oil spill which has devastated the Gulf Coast. Joe Barton said that making this fund for the oil victims was a "tragedy." The congressman then accused Obama of trying to create a "slush fund" with the money.

This was the point where Jon Stewart's anger kicked in. The 'Daily Show' host was fairly unrelenting in his attack. "I don't like you!" he yelled in reply to Barton.

Health Care Bill Passes, Obama SpeaksAfter much debate and frustration on both sides of the aisle, the health care bill passed last night, and President Obama had a few things to say about it on MSNBC.

Wait, he's calling us ordinary?

CNN Anchor Kiran Chetry Makes Verbal Gaffe, Calls Osama Bin Laden 'Obama' (VIDEO)

by Anthony Ventre, posted Mar 18th 2010 12:11PM
Verbal gaffe alert -- CNN news anchor Kiran Chetry made an unfortunate slip of the tongue today on 'American Morning' (weekdays, 6AM ET on CNN), referring to Osama Bin Laden as "Obama." Teasing a report from CIA Director Leon Panetta, which stated that pressure from U.S. troops has pushed Al Qaeda's top leaders into deep hiding, Chetry said that Al Qaeda and affiliated terrorist groups were frustrated and "begging for leadership from Obama," rather than Osama. She quickly corrected herself, and the story played out as intended when the two reporters began the 8 AM news two minutes later.

The First Lady Summons 'Glee' to the White House

by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 22nd 2010 9:31PM
glee_white_gloves_foxWhen the White House calls, you sorta, kinda, have to rearrange the schedule and make room for a command performance. That's what's going on with Fox's hit show, 'Glee.' The First Lady and the First Daughters are big fans of 'Glee' and, according to Michael Ausiello in Entertainment Weekly, 'Glee's' been asked sing at the White House Easter Egg hunt on April 5. So despite the shooting schedule, they're going to rework things to meet the Obamas.

The 'Glee' singers are hot, hot, hot... and you can just see how Sasha and Malia are their target demographics, can't you? Michelle, too. Frankly, they don't need the eggs to get the White House rolling. "Don't Stop Believin'" will do the trick just fine.

Sorry, Snooki: the Obamas Don't Watch 'Jersey Shore'

by Gary Susman, posted Jan 13th 2010 12:00PM
It's been weeks now, and still, President Barack Obama has had nothing to say about two of the greatest threats to American security.

We're speaking, of course, about Snooki and The Situation, from MTV's new series 'Jersey Shore.' Alas, according to First Lady Michelle Obama, it's a show the First Family does not watch. "I've heard about it," Mrs Obama tells People, in an interview all about the Obamas' TV viewing preferences. "Not seen it."

President Obama to appear on the WWE

by Brad Trechak, posted Dec 16th 2009 11:46AM
President ObamaPresident Obama will be appearing on the NBC special WWE Tribute to the Troops on December 19th. Granted, it will be a pre-taped message for the soldiers, but that still counts, right?

It won't even be Obama's first WWE appearance. There were pre-taped messages on one of the WWE broadcasts during the last presidential election by John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (this was before Clinton ceded to Obama). The upcoming event is, to the best of my knowledge, the first WWE taping he has done as President of the United States.

Of course, in my imagination President Obama appears live at the event and steps into the ring. He then calls out WWE Champion Sheamus to a title match. He almost gets the pin until Captain Lou Albano comes back from the dead, runs into the ring with a steel chair and causes a disqualification on the whole match. This sort of thing is probably why my therapy bills are so high.

'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' Breaks Down Obama Afghanistan Address (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Dec 3rd 2009 3:50PM
'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart' Listen up politicians, you cannot put one past Jon Stewart.

Yesterday on 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,' the host opened up the show mentioning the President's Address and his plans to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan next year. Apparently, this same exact speech had been given by President Bush before! Giving credit where credit is due, Stewart makes the quick comparisons between the two Presidential speeches on Afghanistan and and the parallels are startling.

Top most influential word? ObamaVision

by Brad Trechak, posted Sep 24th 2009 12:36PM
ObamaVisionA U.S. tracking group, the Global Language Monitor, has compiled their sixth annual list of Top 10 Telewords (that is, the words or phrases that were the most influential on television). Topping the list off was "ObamaVision". Despite Obama's recent appearance on the show, I don't think David Letterman's writing staff had anything to do with this one.

The next three words were "Financial Meltdown", "Michael Jackson" and "Susan Boyle". I wonder if that means that the three words are interrelated. Could Susan Boyle have been responsible for MJ's death and the Financial Meltdown? Um ... probably not. Okay, let's move on.

President Obama to appear on Letterman this Monday

by Brad Trechak, posted Sep 16th 2009 10:00AM
President Barack ObamaWriting about this is just asking for trouble from the more politically extreme, but it's television news so I'm writing about it. President Barack Obama will be appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman this coming Monday, Sept. 21. He is the sole guest and will take up the full hour of the program.

It is the first time a sitting U.S. President will be appearing on Letterman's CBS show. Obama is likely trying to promote his new health care reform. Usually a television appearance like this one is reserved for those on the campaign trail for the office. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Why stop with Letterman? He could stay another hour on CBS and appear on Craig Ferguson. And why not appear on Leno's new show? Or Conan? Or Jimmy Fallon? Or even Jimmy Kimmel? However, the President is likely a busy man and doesn't want to spread himself too thin. Letterman will do for now.

Don't count on Fox giving up Glee for Obama

by Allison Waldman, posted Sep 4th 2009 10:08AM
President_ObamaThe only way Fox will air President Obama's prime time address next Wednesday will be if he joins the glee club. No, seriously, if the Prez could sing or dance with the kids at McKinley High School on the new Fox series, Glee, he'd have a better chance of getting air time than he does as the Commander in Chief. Fox is not expected to show President Obama's address to Congress.

Fox has already shown an unwillingness to interrupt prime time for President Obama. Back in March, the network chose not to air a press conference. To be honest, Obama has been on TV a lot more than President George W. Bush. All that prime time real estate is expensive, and the networks have squawked about how often Obama has requested the air time.
