No, don't worry, it's not going to be a two-hour live funeral. Turner Classic Movies is going to show three of Karl Malden's best movies in a mini-marathon starting at 8PM. Here's the lineup:

8PM: On The Waterfront
10PM: A Streetcar Named Desire
12:15AM: Birdman of Alcatraz

This will be a good chance for people who only know Malden from The Streets of San Francisco or American Express ads to see what he was like as an actor on the big screen. I think they should be showing more though. TCM must own more movies that feature Malden.

• PBS has a new Washington Week at 8, followed by new episodes of NOW and Bill Moyers Journal.
• TCM has On The Waterfront at 8.
• At 9, NBC has a new Dateline.

• At 10, CBS has a new Swingtown.
• ABC has a new 20/20 at 10.
• At 10:30, E! has a new episode of The Soup.
• At 11, HBO has the season premiere of Real Time with Bill Maher.

Remember when AMC used to show movies that actually fit into their name, American Movie Classics? And then for some reason they started to show Predator five times a month. Turner Classic Movies has been the network to watch lately.

But starting in October, the cable network will get back to its roots a little bit more with AMC Gold, which, despite sounding like some CD of 70s songs you might buy from an infomercial, is actually a new regular feature showcasing movies that AMC says are "essential viewing." So far the list includes On The Waterfront, Sergeant York, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and Apollo 13.

Apollo 13 is a good movie, but let's hope the network doesn't pull from the list of more recent films too often. There are plenty of older classic gold movies to keep the feature going for a few years.
