TCA Report: 'Once Upon a Time' Panel Talk Magic, Disney and Playing Two Roles

by Laura Prudom, posted Aug 7th 2011 7:15PM
While NBC's 'Grimm' focuses on the creepy side of fairytales, ABC's 'Once Upon a Time' is much more concerned with the whimsy of the fantastical stories we grew up with, and seems far more enchanting as a result.

Created by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis of 'Lost' (the pair called Damon Lindelof "the Godfather of 'Once Upon a Time'" on the panel -- promising!), the show blends characters from Disney, Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen and more with the real world, offering a new take on familiar tales in a way ABC hopes will connect with audiences of all ages.

EXCLUSIVE: Paula Marshall to Work Her Magic on 'Once Upon a Time'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jul 27th 2011 9:05PM
Paula Marshall has been cast as a "badass" character on 'Once Upon a Time,' the upcoming fairy tale drama from former 'Lost' executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

Marshall, a busy actress who has appeared in everything from 'Cupid' to 'Californication,' will play Malificent, the nemesis of Sleeping Beauty. "She's a badass and she's also the rival" of Lana Parrilla's evil queen character, Kitsis said.

Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Robert Carlyle, Josh Dallas and Parrilla, Giancarlo Esposito of 'Breaking Bad' will also appear in the recurring role of the Magic Mirror in 'Once', as TV Line reported earlier this month.

UPDATE: ABC has confirmed that 'Vampire Diaries' and 'Alias' actor David Anders will play a doctor in an upcoming episode of 'Once Upon a Time.'

I spoke to Kitsis and Horowitz at length in their 'Once' office (where I admired the 'Lost' posters you see below), and I'll publish the majority of that interview closer to the show's Oct. 23 premiere date. But I can't resist sharing a little of what they had to say about the show's central concept, which features characters in a fairy tale kingdom where the evil queen is up to no good, and characters in a modern-day town where things are stranger than they first appear.

One lady has a great show ... the other isn't a ladyWe've seen the network's new fall pilots, and while they're not for review -- things often change drastically before the shows are set to premiere -- we do want to share our first reactions with you.

This is designed to get you excited for some new shows ... and to warn you to curb your enthusiasm for others. There are 12 shows total -- the good ('Good Christian Belles'), the bad ('Charlie's Angels') and the ugly men dressed as women (cross-dressing comedy 'Work It') -- and plenty of varying opinions from Mo Ryan, Maggie Furlong, Jean Bentley, Chris Harnick, Kim Potts and Alexis Moore.

Here's how we're breaking these down:
Watch It - awesome show, can't wait for more
Skip It - it's either horrible or just totally not their thing
DVR It - there's potential, will give it a second chance
