Executive Explains TV Economics 101, But Maybe It's Time to Change the Syllabus

Craig Engler of SyFy DigitalWant to know the ins and outs of how TV networks actually make money in the digital age? A top TV executive is answering such questions for us layfolk for the next couple of weeks over at Boing Boing.

Craig Engler, the vice president and general manager of SyFy's digital side, is guest blogging there for a couple weeks, and so far, he's offered some informative posts that help explain some tricky issues about the changing economics of TV in the often confusing download-on-demand era.

He's writing about other cool-geeky stuff as well, but it's worth reading his posts about the business for some clear answers to such basic but thorny questions as why it's often difficult to find the shows you want on legal streaming sites, or why online viewing doesn't really help a show's ratings.

What Jason is thankful for

GleeI'm not particularly thankful that I'm going to be having my very own battle of the bulge this upcoming week, but I am looking forward to good eats and seeing the family. The older I get, the faster these years wiz by, so it's important that we slow down and take the time to be appreciative of what we have, even if we might always want a little more.

This year, we made the jump from a 1997 model 27" Philips Magnavox television to a massive 52" HDTV. We also picked up a PS3, partially for the Blu-Ray player. So I'm thankful to finally be caught up with the rest of the world in television technology. Who knew it could all be so pretty?

More specifically, I think we're in a great era of television, even as viewer numbers continue to erode. There are just so many good shows on television, and thanks to DVRs and online streaming of those shows, we even have better opportunities to watch them. But what specifically am I thankful for this year?

What Joel is thankful for

Neil Patrick Harris in HIMYM: The PlaybookYou know, it's funny. When I started here I was a lowly IT guy with no girlfriend and lots of time on his hands to watch TV, even on Thanksgiving. Now I'm engaged, the editor of this site, and have to run around to so many family and friend-related events this weekend my head's already spinning just thinking about it. So I have a lot to be thankful for (and I just realized how friggin' long I've been here... wow).

But TV has always been a part of that equation, and it had no less of a role for me this year. So, in the TV world, here is what will make me thankful as I dive into the turkey tomorrow:

ABC's Wednesday comedy line-up: Against all trends, ABC rolled the dice and started a whole new night of comedy on Wednesdays. And while Hank flamed out, The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town look like they have staying power, both from a quality and a ratings standpoint.

Survey says: online television is a fad

HuluResearchers think this whole "Internet as a television" concept may be slightly overblown. In a survey, only 8% of teens aged 12 to 17 say they use the Internet to watch television.

Well, duh. You know why that is? Because computer monitor screens are still relatively small ones that go on a desk while television screens tend to be much larger and better for overall television watching.

There's also the factor that most of the time programs are initially shown on television and then move to the Internet. For those who are eagerly awaiting the new episode of Dollhouse, they will likely go to Fox on Friday nights rather than Hulu.

Let's not discount that online television is a relatively new phenomenon.

I predict that eventually the Internet will be streamed directly into one's television via your cable or television provider (and I won't discount satellite at this stage) and then online television viewership will go up. Until then, we're still mostly stuck with the traditional model.
